Design Of Multifunctional Lattice‐Frame Materials For Compact Heat Exchangers, K. N. Son, J. A. Weibel, V. Kumaresan, S. V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Structured porous materials show great potential as extended surfaces in heat-exchange applications that also require design for load-bearing capability. In particular, lattice-frame materials (LFM) are known for their superior strength-to-weight ratio; this work presents a comprehensive experimental and numerical study of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous LFMs. Flow through a periodic unit cell of the material is simulated to characterize the forced-convection performance under hydraulically and thermally fully developed conditions. The performance of LFMs with a tetrahedral ligament configuration is characterized as a function of Reynolds number in the laminar regime (150 < Re < 1000) in terms of Nusselt number and friction factor; the effect of porosity is studied by changing the ligament diameter. Experiments are performed for a subset of porosities to validate the numerical approach. A method is demonstrated for utilizing the simulation results, which assume perfect surface efficiency, to predict the performance of LFMs with non-ideal surface efficiency, based on the conduction resistance of the ligaments. It is shown that the thermal behavior of the ligaments closely matches that of cylindrical fins in cross flow and that this analogy can be used to calculate the overall surface efficiency. The implications of the current results on the design of compact heat exchangers using LFMs is assessed using several conventional performance metrics. Our analysis illustrates the challenges in defining any one universal performance metric for compact heat exchanger design; an appropriate performance metric must be selected that accounts for the particular multifunctional performance characteristics of interest. LFMs are shown to provide the benefits of high-porosity and high surface area-to-volume ratio of materials such as metal foams, while also incurring lower pressure drops and displaying higher structural integrity. This makes them ideal for heat exchangers in aerospace and other applications demanding such multifunctional capabilities. The characterization provided in this study readily allows LFM designs for heat exchanger applications with combined heat-transfer and pressure-drop constraints.

Design Of Electrode Arrays For 3d Capacitance Tomography In Planar Domains, S Taylor Jan 2017

Design Of Electrode Arrays For 3d Capacitance Tomography In Planar Domains, S Taylor

CTRC Research Publications

Electrode design is investigated for electrical capacitance tomography on a 1 mm-thick 3D planar domain. Arrays of square electrodes are located on both sides of the domain, which is filled with dielectric material. Anomalies of interest are voids in the material with low dielectric constant. Simulated tomography is conducted with various electrode patterns over a range of electrode sizes in order to compare performance. The high-aspect-ratio domain requires a large finite element mesh for simulating electric fields and for defining spatial sensitivity responses of electrode pairs. Compared to the canonical 2D pipe cross-section problem, this high-aspect-ratio system requires solving the …

Quantitative Evaluation Of The Dependence Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement On Sintered Particle Coating Characteristics, S. Sarangi, J A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2017

Quantitative Evaluation Of The Dependence Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement On Sintered Particle Coating Characteristics, S. Sarangi, J A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Immersion cooling strategies often employ surface enhancements to improve the pool boiling heat transfer performance. Sintered particle/powder coatings have been commonly used on smooth surfaces to reduce the wall superheat and increase the critical heat flux (CHF). However, there is no unified understanding of the role of coating characteristics on pool boiling heat transfer enhancement. The morphology and size of the particles affect the pore geometry, permeability, thermal conductivity, and other characteristics of the sintered coating. In turn, these characteristics impact the heat transfer coefficient and CHF during boiling. In this study, pool boiling of FC-72 is experimentally investigated using …

Case Study On The Two Individual Paradigms Of Education In A Manufacturing Quality Course, Rustin Webster, Matthew Turner Jan 2017

Case Study On The Two Individual Paradigms Of Education In A Manufacturing Quality Course, Rustin Webster, Matthew Turner

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This article provides a review of two paradigms of education and the application of each in a manufacturing quality control course for engineering technology (ET) students. The most common paradigm of education used in quality-focused courses is teaching-centered. This traditional method has contributed to students’ perception of quality (e.g., quality control, statistical process control, total quality management), as a dry subject to learn compared to other core and/or elective courses in their plans of study. This case study describes the creation and implementation of a manufacturing quality control curriculum that is learning centered. Based on student feedback, this approach increased …

Applying Authentic Learning Through Cultivation Of The Entrepreneurial Mindset In The Engineering Classroom, Lisa Bosman, Stephanie Fernhaber Jan 2017

Applying Authentic Learning Through Cultivation Of The Entrepreneurial Mindset In The Engineering Classroom, Lisa Bosman, Stephanie Fernhaber

Technology Leadership and Innovation Faculty Publications

Higher education provides plenty of opportunity for theory and in many cases, even the ability to apply theory in a laboratory setting. Yet, there remains limited opportunity for students to learn by doing through participation in authentic learning experiences. The purpose of this paper is to provide one potential solution for integrating authentic learning into the engineering classroom by cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset. As entrepreneurship serves as an integral part of the economy, developing an entrepreneurial mindset through authentic learning experiences is essential for engineers. While online discussion prompts represent a useful way for educators to facilitate student learning, less …

Integrating Data Information Literacy Into A Service- Learning Engineering Design Course, Margaret Phillips, Mohammad Jahanshahi Jan 2017

Integrating Data Information Literacy Into A Service- Learning Engineering Design Course, Margaret Phillips, Mohammad Jahanshahi

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Over the past several years increasing emphasis has been placed on the development of data information literacy (DIL) skills for engineering researchers to comply with funding requirements and to facilitate data sharing, reuse, and preservation. These efforts have been largely aimed at faculty members and graduate students, and to some extent undergraduate students in preparation for their roles as future researchers. However, little attention has been directed at developing DIL skills in undergraduate engineering students engaged in non-research activities, such as service-learning design projects that integrate instruction and community service. This work-in-progress paper reports on using service-learning pedagogy to integrate …

Curating Automatic Vehicle Location Data To Compare The Performance Of Outlier Filtering Methods, Jijo K. Mathew, Christopher M. Day, Howell Li, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Affiliated Reports

Agencies use a variety of technologies and data providers to obtain travel time information. The best quality data can be obtained from second-by-second tracking of vehicles, but that data presents many challenges in terms of privacy, storage requirements and analysis. More frequently agencies collect or purchase segment travel time based upon some type of matching of vehicles between two spatially distributed points. Typical methods for that data collection involve license plate re-identification, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or some type of rolling DSRC identifier. One of the challenges in each of these sampling techniques is to employ filtering techniques to remove outliers associated …

Multimedia Techniques For Construction Education And Training, Wayne A. Bunnell, Darcy M. Bullock Jan 2017

Multimedia Techniques For Construction Education And Training, Wayne A. Bunnell, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

The current profession of civil engineering often focuses education and training on code compliance rather than constructability and construction techniques. Also, it is well accepted that it takes a decade or more for engineers to develop a high-level project construction understanding, that and many state departments of transportation rely on in-field training for entry-level inspectors, with little or no education provisions for contractors. This research investigated the use of time-lapse photography to develop training and education material that will improve the understanding of project construction and crucial quality control specifications of an entry-level engineer, contractor, or inspector. Overall, the project …

Tangier And Kerouac's Oriental Experience In Liminality, Peggy Pacini Dec 2016

Tangier And Kerouac's Oriental Experience In Liminality, Peggy Pacini

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Tangier and Kerouac's Oriental Experience in Liminality" Peggy Pacini discusses Kerouac's production derived from his Tangerian experience. Since the Tangier narratives have no existence of their own in the Duluoz Legend and are included in larger volumes about traveling and passing through, Pacini examines how this production cohered within the entire Legend and the terminology and world vision Kerouac had already fashioned. Focusing on two texts, "Big Trip to Europe" and "Passing through Tangiers, France and London," Pacini considers Kerouac's and his alter ego Duluoz's visions of Tangier and their journey to Tangier as many thresholds or …

Bowles's Up Above The World As Beatnik Murder Mystery, Greg Bevan Dec 2016

Bowles's Up Above The World As Beatnik Murder Mystery, Greg Bevan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Bowles's Up Above the World as Beatnik Murder Mystery" Greg Bevan discusses Paul Bowles's fourth and final novel, which at the time of its publication was met with mixed reactions from reviewers and its creator alike, and has seen relatively scanty critical attention in the years since. Gena Dagel Caponi perceives in the novel a reflection of Bowles's struggle for control, during the time of its writing, in the face of his wife Jane's terminal illness. Building on this insight, the current essay notes the same tension in the writings of the Beats—a movement with which Bowles …

Burroughs As A Political Writer?, Alexander Greiffenstern Dec 2016

Burroughs As A Political Writer?, Alexander Greiffenstern

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Burroughs as a Political Writer?" Alexander Greiffenstern discusses political elements in William S. Burroughs's work. Greiffenstern looks at Burroughs's text "The Coming of the Purple Better One" written for Esquire about the Democratic National Convention in Chicago 1968. By writing a surprisingly personal text, Burroughs might have captured something about the significance of the convention that many later historical accounts miss. In the end, Burroughs leaves the critical reader no other choice than to attempt a historical and political analysis.

Beat Contenders (Micheline, Sanders, Kupferberg), A. Robert Lee Dec 2016

Beat Contenders (Micheline, Sanders, Kupferberg), A. Robert Lee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Beat Contenders (Micheline, Sanders, Kupferberg)" A. Robert Lee asks if we are in danger of too fixed a Beat canonization. That is, do the Usual Suspects—Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Burroughs, with Corso, Ferlinghetti, Cassady, and Snyder in the frame—assume too presiding a role? There is, for sure, rightly, increased recognition of Beat women writers and attention has been given to the Afro-Beat circuit and, indeed, to a wider multicultural roster to include Latino/a and Asian American authorship. Beat's international reach has won its place, from the United Kingdom and Continental Europe to Japan and Australia. Even so, other …

The Cultural Translation Of Ginsberg's Howl In Turkey, Erik Mortenson Dec 2016

The Cultural Translation Of Ginsberg's Howl In Turkey, Erik Mortenson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Cultural Translation of Ginsberg's Howl in Turkey" Erik Mortenson examines three Turkish translations of Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl in order to explore the ways in which Ginsberg's poem becomes redeployed in new cultural contexts. Orhan Duru and Ferit Edgü's 1976 translation presents a more politicized Ginsberg that draws on his anti-establishment credentials as a social activist. This comes as little surprise, since in pre-1980 coup Turkey rebellion was thought in purely political terms of right verses left. Hakan Arslan's 1991 update provides a less political and more familiar Ginsberg, in keeping with a society that left …
