Experiments On The Low Frequency Barrier Characteristics Of Cellular Metamaterial Panels In A Diffuse Sound Field, Srinivas Varanasi, J Stuart Bolton, Thomas Siegmund Feb 2017

Experiments On The Low Frequency Barrier Characteristics Of Cellular Metamaterial Panels In A Diffuse Sound Field, Srinivas Varanasi, J Stuart Bolton, Thomas Siegmund

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

The metamaterial under investigation here consists of a periodic arrangement of unit plates in a grid-like frame such that there is a contrast in the local areal mass between cell interior and cell wall. In the low frequency range and under normal incidence this metamaterial panel exhibits a sound transmission loss significantly larger than the transmission loss of an unstructured panel with the same homogeneous mass per unit area. However, when the incident sound field is diffuse, the relative advantage of the metamaterial barrier is reduced or eliminated. A sequence of experiments is documented to demonstrate that the relative advantage …

Integrating Web 2.0 Technologies Into Face-To-Face Pbl To Support Producing, Storing, And Sharing Content In A Higher Education Course, Jaana Virtanen, Päivi Rasi Jan 2017

Integrating Web 2.0 Technologies Into Face-To-Face Pbl To Support Producing, Storing, And Sharing Content In A Higher Education Course, Jaana Virtanen, Päivi Rasi

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

In this article we present and discuss the process of developing and implementing a PBL-based course entitled Moving Images in Teaching and Learning that was held at the University of Lapland, Finland. In the course of the project, this fairly traditional face-to-face course was redesigned into a blended PBL course by integrating Web 2.0 applications into the course. The pedagogical rationale was to support students’ meaningful learning in various phases of the PBL process, and to enable easy storage and sharing of the ideas produced by the students. In addition, the rationale was to create more opportunities for students to …

Repurposing Approach Identifies Auranofin With Broad Spectrum Antifungal Activity That Targets Mia40-Erv1 Pathway, Shankar Thangamani, Matthew Maland, Haroon Mohammad, Pete E. Pascuzzi, Larisa Avramova, Carla E. Koehler, Tony R. Hazbun, Mohamed N. Seleem Jan 2017

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Current antifungal therapies have limited effectiveness in treating invasive fungal infections. Furthermore, the development of new antifungal is currently unable to keep pace with the urgent demand for safe and effective new drugs. Auranofin, an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, inhibits growth of a diverse array of clinical isolates of fungi and represents a new antifungal agent with a previously unexploited mechanism of action. In addition to auranofin's potent antifungal activity against planktonic fungi, this drug significantly reduces the metabolic activity of Candida cells encased in a biofilm. Unbiased chemogenomic profiling, using heterozygous S. cerevisiae deletion strains, …

U.S.-China Economic And Security Review Commission: Emerging Factor In Western Pacific Strategic Policy Analysis, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Those studying and analyzing Western Pacific strategic trends and develop- ments have access to multiple unclassified analyses of security trends in this region covering these waters and adjacent countries. These information resources are produced by military and government agencies from multiple countries, multinational public policy research institutions, popular and scholarly journals, and Internet resources featuring text, data, webcasts, and imagery. One of these resources is the U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission established in the 2001 National Defense Authorization Act. This article argues that this organization’s analyses should be considered essential reading by civilian and military policymakers and individuals and …

The Relationship Between Project-Based Learning And Rigor In Stem-Focused High Schools, Julie Edmunds, Nina Arshavsky, Elizabeth Glennie, Karen Charles, Olivia Rice Jan 2017

The Relationship Between Project-Based Learning And Rigor In Stem-Focused High Schools, Julie Edmunds, Nina Arshavsky, Elizabeth Glennie, Karen Charles, Olivia Rice

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PjBL) is an approach often favored in STEM classrooms, yet some studies have shown that teachers struggle to implement it with academic rigor. This paper explores the relationship between PjBL and rigor in the classrooms of ten STEM-oriented high schools. Utilizing three different data sources reflecting three different perceptions—student surveys, teacher logs, and classroom observations—the study examines the extent to which PjBL and rigor co-occur. Across all three measures, the results show that use of PjBL is associated with higher levels of rigor. However, the study also shows that academic rigor can be present in the absence of …

The Effect Of Relevance Strategies On Student Perceptions Of Introductory Courses, Heather N. Fedesco, Ashley Kentner, Jane Natt Jan 2017

The Effect Of Relevance Strategies On Student Perceptions Of Introductory Courses, Heather N. Fedesco, Ashley Kentner, Jane Natt

IMPACT Publications

The purpose of this study was to test whether increasing the relevancy of course assignments in a large multi-section introductory public speaking course would lead to improvements in student perceptions of course outcomes. Survey responses from 1,878 students were analyzed to test whether differences exist between students enrolled in classes held during the Spring 2015 semester and those enrolled in classes held in Fall 2015 during which the more relevant course assignments were incorporated. Results reveal that increasing the relevancy of assignments is associated with greater perceived course relevance, motivation for participating in the class, and perceptions of learning. This …

Muskmelon Variety Trial In Southwest Indiana — 2016, Wenjing Guan, Dennis Nowaskie

Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Research Reports

This is a compilation of 21 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included.

Video-Related Pedagogical Strategies In Massive Open Online Courses: A Systematic Literature Review, Nathan Hicks, Wei Zakharov, Kerrie Douglas, Judith Nixon, Heidi Diefes-Dux, Peter Bermel, Krishna Madhavan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

For engineers who work with rapidly changing technology in multi-disciplinary teams, massive open online courses (MOOCs) offer the unique ability to deliver free, convenient professional development by providing up-to-date information spanning a wide range of disciplines. However, the MOOC boom has not been without its criticisms; many question the effectiveness of MOOCs. In response, many research studies are being conducted across the world to explore the effectiveness of various pedagogical approaches in MOOCs for different stakeholders. As videos constitute one of the most prominent features of MOOCs, it is important to analyse the empirical evidence of best practices for MOOC …
