CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Collective Memory in Advocating Peace. The Nanjing Incident as a case study" Idham Badruzaman provides an example of how to build a peaceful Asian Community. The Foundation is establishing forms of bilateral cooperation at the educational level; mostly in universities and higher education institutions across the world. These programs are contributing to create cross-cultural ties within the Asian Community and across the world, surpassing national interests and boundaries, fostering inter-culturalism, and promoting tolerance amid differences. By focusing on the Nanjing Incident, the paper provides an example of how the building of collective memory can help reconciliation, showing …

Sophic Education: Where Is Your Treasure?, Tyson Anderson May 2018

Sophic Education: Where Is Your Treasure?, Tyson Anderson

Education and Culture

Challenges to education today are part of a wider cultural context. Dewey, Heidegger, and certain Russian thinkers have remarkably similar diagnoses of our post-Cartesian reductive condition. In education this complex appears as “educational materialism.” In contrast, a “sophic education” would be similar to Bulgakov’s “sophic economy.” The discovery of Chauvet Cave shows an original human situation where the practical and the spiritual were integrated and “sophic.” For Americans, Plymouth Colony’s commitment to “the general good” and Roger Williams’s advocacy of democracy and freedom of conscience were also nonreductive and suggest a direction for an integrative, sophic education.

Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty May 2018

Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty

Education and Culture

As the world grows increasingly contentious, education for citizenship demands greater attention. Yet at this perilous juncture, social studies has neglected to take up the task of preparing citizens in a democratic and global society. Social studies has become increasingly fragmented and isolated by disciplinary foci that fetishize academic pursuits over broadly social purposes, precisely what Dewey warned against and which represent but a small portion of its functions. The academic-only social studies education has created a temporal disconnection that affirms the preparation for future life rather than, as Dewey preferred, the school as life itself. Dewey tasked the school …

Fibrous Material Microstructure Design For Optimal Structural Damping, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton May 2018

Fibrous Material Microstructure Design For Optimal Structural Damping, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

It is shown here that properly designed fibrous media (e.g., glass or polymeric fibers) can be used to damp structural vibration as well as to absorb sound. The materials can then be multi-functional, reducing the number of elements required to achieve a specified level of noise and vibration performance. Past work demonstrated that layers of fibrous media placed on panels can damp the panel motion by removing energy from the nearfield acoustical motion generated by the panel vibration. The current study focused on designing the fibrous medium to ensure optimal vibration damping in a particular application. First, a method of …

Driving Foreign Relations: The European Sports Car And The Globalization Of America, Keenan J. Shimko May 2018

Driving Foreign Relations: The European Sports Car And The Globalization Of America, Keenan J. Shimko

Open Access Dissertations

Historians are just beginning to examine the ways in which Americans were affected at home by contact with the peoples and cultures of Europe through consumption. As Kristin Hoganson notes in Consumer’s Imperium, when it comes to Americanization and the globalization of culture “we know more about the outgoing tide than the incoming swells.”1 My dissertation takes the notion of Americanization and inverts it to examine the influence of a European product, the sports car, on American consumers and automobile manufacturers in the postwar period. By using European sports cars as a case study to explore the influence of European …

Development Of A Finite Volume General Two-Phase Navier-Stokes Solver For Direct Numerical Simulations On Cut-Cells With Sharp Fixed Interface, Vishwanath Ganesan May 2018

Development Of A Finite Volume General Two-Phase Navier-Stokes Solver For Direct Numerical Simulations On Cut-Cells With Sharp Fixed Interface, Vishwanath Ganesan

Open Access Theses

A general two-phase solver is developed to solve Navier-Stokes equation for low Mach number incompressible fluids on a mixed grid using a finite volume approach by employing a sharp fixed interface cut-cell method. This sharp interface divides the computational domain into two sub-domains corresponding to two different phases. The Navier-Stokes equations in each sub-domain are solved separately by coupling the boundary conditions for mass and momentum at the interface. These sub-domains can either be of same media (fluid-fluid) or different media (fluid-solid or fluid-gas). For a fluid-gas media, this enables to distinguish the sub-domains clearly and establish discontinuities in the …

Intimacies Of Power: Eroticized Violence And Gendered Sexuality In Transgressive Art 1890s— #Metoo, Julia Louisa Smith May 2018

Intimacies Of Power: Eroticized Violence And Gendered Sexuality In Transgressive Art 1890s— #Metoo, Julia Louisa Smith

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to understand eroticized violence by analyzing sadism and masochism as models of modern masculinity and power. I look at the literature and theory of male sexual sadism and masochism as “artefacts of art” as metaphors of male subjectivity expressed across vast and interdisciplinary cultural fields of cultural expression (Bersani, Freudian Body 5). Best understood as an aesthetic formation, masochism shows how cultural formations of subjectivity and sexualized violence are a modern for m of power that operates by means of subversion and can tolerate its own castration. As a metaphor of modern masculinity, de Sade’s sadism shows …

As a result, the concept of sexuality comfort was reconstructed, and three findings …

Synthesis Of Inhomogeneous Waves Using The Least-Squares Method, Trevor A. Kyle May 2018

Synthesis Of Inhomogeneous Waves Using The Least-Squares Method, Trevor A. Kyle

Open Access Theses

The aim of the work presented in this document is to demonstrate the versatility and applicability of least-squares reconstruction of acoustic waves. Appropriately tailored, certain kinds of acoustic waves are able to thermomechanically excite energetic materials in a safe, reliable manner. This allows for easier and more effective detection than current methods are able to offer. Typically, due to the large impedance difference between any given fluid and solid, it is exceedingly difficult to transmit energy between the two dissimilar media. However, it has been shown that certain spatially decaying plane waves, called inhomogeneous waves, are able to breach the …

Development Of Targeted Pro-Angiogenic Therapies For Ischemic Diabetic Foot Ulcer Repair, Jenny B. Lin May 2018

Development Of Targeted Pro-Angiogenic Therapies For Ischemic Diabetic Foot Ulcer Repair, Jenny B. Lin

Open Access Dissertations

Between 15-25% of diabetic patients develop chronic foot ulcers within their lifetime. These ulcers are characterized by delayed wound healing, are highly susceptible to infection, and can lead to lower-limb/foot amputation. Impaired ulcer healing is most often due to ischemia and insufficient formation of new vessels in the wound bed, as well as rapid turnover of healing tissue by excessive matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity. To improve healing of chronic ischemic wounds, researchers have sought to increase angiogenesis at the wound site using growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is a key angiogenic mediator and uniquely participates …

Building on the theoretic strength of differential privacy, researchers at the University of California Berkeley have built a tool called FLEX that incorporates differential privacy and have tested FLEX using a dataset based on actual queries submitted by Uber’s employees. In their research, a novel idea called elastic sensitivity was introduced to implement differential privacy; this research in turn tests these concepts on datasets from several domains including automobile, medical, network, password, and social media areas. This research also checks for statistical information gathering accuracy from the datasets and observes performance overhead for queries. The study also presents the results …

Heat And Mass Transfer Analysis For Membrane Distillation, Albraa A. Alsaati May 2018

Heat And Mass Transfer Analysis For Membrane Distillation, Albraa A. Alsaati

Open Access Theses

Membrane Distillation (MD) has recently emerged as promising technology for desalination as it is less sensitive to feed concentration which increase distilled water yield of desalination process. However, one major drawback of MD is the high energy consumption despite the continuous e↵ort to optimize the processes through various configurations. In this thesis, we evaluate a configuration to reduce energy consumption of membrane distillation while maintaining state-of-the-art mass flux rate through membranes. Localizing heat generation at the liquid-membrane interface reduces ambient exposure of heated mass resulting in reduction of ambient thermal losses. Additionally, operating on stagnant feed eliminates energy required for …

Effect Of Surface Treatments On Radiation Tolerance Of Ati 718plus Alloy, Yerik Bazarbayev May 2018

Effect Of Surface Treatments On Radiation Tolerance Of Ati 718plus Alloy, Yerik Bazarbayev

Open Access Theses

The objective of this study is to observe irradiation effects on the microstructure of nickelbased alloy after surface enhancements. Surface modifications as laser shock peening (LSP) and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) techniques were implemented on ATI 718 Plus alloy. These methods introduce compressive residual stresses to the surface of the material. It follows that the samples experienced a severe plastic deformation, and UNSM technique refines the grains. After irradiation was done by 2 MeV protons at 500ºC with damage dose 1 dpa, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) lamellae were made and bright field scanning TEM (BF STEM) images were taken …

Safeguardp: An Architecture For Mediated Control Of Desktop Applications By Untrusted Crowd Workers, Sylvia T. Carrell

Open Access Theses

The future of crowdsourcing depends on improving usability for the requesters who post jobs. Allowing workers to perform tasks directly on a requester’s computer could help, by obviating the need to adapt data into formats that a crowdsourcing platform can handle. However, granting remote access to a requester’s desktop would also pose the risk the workers might steal information or take malicious actions. This thesis presents SafeguaRDP, an architecture designed to enable future services in which a mediated and redacted desktop is shown to a remote worker. The redaction of the desktop does not modify any files on the desktop; …

Droplet Spreading On A Substrate, Chao-Ying Chen May 2018

Droplet Spreading On A Substrate, Chao-Ying Chen

Open Access Theses

The present work focuses on spreading dynamics of thin viscous droplets on a planar and smooth substrate in a small Reynolds number regime. The droplets are affected by gravity, surface tension and viscous forces. For triple-phase zone, the moving contact-line models are provided to remove the singularity at the edge of the droplet. Our aim of this study is to predict the experimental results and extend the analysis to spreading on a porous substrate. Besides, we quantify the role of rheological parameters, for example, exponent for power-law liquids, on the spreading dynamics. The mathematical models for a Newtonian droplet and …

The gaming industry always faces the continual challenges of striking balance between real-time computing performance and graphics presentation quality. This is particularly apparent for a game with vast wild-lands scenes which demands for a large number of tree models. From the visual perception perspective, this paper investigated whether people can distinguish trees with uniqueness of various features (relative orientation, density of branches, leaf color) using the same tree model in a virtual environment. During the controlled experiment, quantitative research methods were used, which measured the statistics of tree variations. The results suggested that our methods successfully contributed a strategy in …

Refiguring Hybridity In Star Trek, Elizabeth Gellis May 2018

Refiguring Hybridity In Star Trek, Elizabeth Gellis

Open Access Theses

In this thesis, I explore the ways in which the Star Trek franchise posits hybridity. Examining three hybrid characters—Spock and B’Elanna, both half-human, half-alien, and Data, an android—I explore how each character relates to their hybrid identity and envisions their own hybridity. Rejecting previous models for hybridity that use an additive, percentage-based logic, I use these characters to create a new framework for hybridity. Beginning with the figure of the Jew as an example of alternative Otherness, I posit hybridity as an emergent entanglement, a unifying force that reconciles and reinforces the disparate parts of the self—while retaining an Otherness …
