Building Flexibility Estimation And Control For Grid Ancillary Services, Veronica Adetola, Fu Lin, Shui Yuan, Haydeen Reeve
Building Flexibility Estimation And Control For Grid Ancillary Services, Veronica Adetola, Fu Lin, Shui Yuan, Haydeen Reeve
International High Performance Buildings Conference
The increased adoption of intermittent renewable energy, such as wind and solar, onto the electrical grid is increasing the need for greater demand flexibility and the development of more advanced demand management solutions. For example, in March 2017 solar and wind set record highs in California, contributing over 49% of its power supply. Furthermore, Hawaii has committed to meeting 100% of its electrical demand from renewables by 2045. This transformation requires solutions to robustly and cost-effectively manage dynamic changes on the grid while ensuring quality of service. Advanced demand response approaches are a key way of enabling this required grid …

Optimal Dispatch Controller For Fuel Cell Integrated Building, Yashen Lin, Dustin Mclarty, Annabelle Pratt, Brian Ball, Gregor Henze, Genevieve Saur
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Buildings contribute to around 40% of the total energy consumption in the US. Improvements to building operation offer substantial economic benefits and emissions reductions. Opportunities arise as more renewable energy sources are integrated into the power grid, where the inherent flexibility that buildings can provide become valuable assets for grid services. Stationary fuel cells providing combined heat and power (CHP) add more flexibility to building operation, where both significant electrical and thermal loads need to be met. As the technology matures, improved fuel cell responsiveness allows for advanced dynamic applications to maximize their utility within the building system. The integration …

Model Predictive Control Of Inverter Air Conditioners Responding To Real-Time Electricity Prices In Smart Grids, Maomao Hu, Fu Xiao
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Real-time electricity prices provide great opportunities for residential consumers to participate in demand response (DR) programs in smart grids. One of the biggest challenges faced by the DR program participants are the lack of advanced DR-enabled residential appliances which can automatically respond to real-time electricity prices, especially the lack of DR-enabled air conditioners which are the major contributors to electricity bills. In this paper, we aim to use model predictive control (MPC) techniques to control the inverter air conditioners. Instead of simply adjusting temperature set-points in the conventional DR control strategies, the MPC controllers are used to directly control the …

Experimental Measurements Of Clothes Dryer Drum Heat And Mass Transfer Effectiveness, Kyle R Gluesenkamp, Philip Boudreaux, Bo Shen, Dakota Goodman, Viral Patel
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Accurate system modeling of a clothes dryer requires a drum component that displays correct trends with respect to changing conditions. In this work, a model of drum heat and mass transfer effectiveness is adopted. Within this framework, experimental measurements of drum effectiveness are investigated with respect to several variables: drum volume, load mass, cloth type, drum volumetric air flow rate, and drum entering air temperature. These data can inform the modeling and simulation of any clothes dryer with horizontal-axis, axial-flow tumble-type clothes dryer drum.
Comparison Of Three Transient Models For Slab Heating/Cooling Systems, Anthony Rey, Rémi Dumoulin, Andreas Athienitis
Comparison Of Three Transient Models For Slab Heating/Cooling Systems, Anthony Rey, Rémi Dumoulin, Andreas Athienitis
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Radiant floor heating and cooling systems can be beneficial in various applications such as heating or cooling buildings and in infrastructure applications such as de-icing of bridges and roads as well as snow melting. Such systems usually include a significant amount of thermal mass, thus providing energy flexibility in buildings. Models of embedded-tube radiant systems are therefore useful to predict their behavior (rate of heat transfer and outlet heat-transfer fluid temperature), which can be used for the development of predictive control strategies and optimal control algorithms. As a result, a comparison of different models is conducted in this paper. The …

Critical Opportunity Areas For Building Performance, Domenique Lumpkin, Joseph Sinfield, Travis Horton
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Green buildings are a proposed holistic solution to reduce energy consumption while simultaneously improving an array of factors affecting the indoor quality of life for building occupants. However, green building performance varies and may not achieve intended design goals. Research has concluded that no single factor determines the actual energy performance of buildings. To deliver energy-efficient buildings an integrated design that considers climate, technology, operation and maintenance and occupant behavior should be implemented. This work aimed to employ a holistic lens to relate human-building interaction and building performance characteristics. Specifically, systems theory and complex-problem solving techniques were employed to capture …

Optimization And Evaluation Of A Botanical Air Filtration System In A Residence, Zhen Li, William Hutzel
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can significantly influence a person’s health, comfort, and productivity. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicate that Americans, on average, spend over 90 percent of their time indoors where the air may be two to five times more polluted than outdoors. Comparative risk studies performed by the EPA and the Science Advisory Board (SAB) rank indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. Studies have shown that plants are effective in removing indoor air contaminants as they break down air contaminants into their fundamental elements, and through the process …

The present research used an empirical, crowdsourced trait profiling approach to describe the personality of Trump that accounts for political views. Clinton (N=120) and Trump (N=118) voters rated Trump’s personality on the 30 facets of the Five Factor Model. Participants also provided perceived helpfulness and harmfulness ratings of the facets before and after the election. We treated these facet level ratings as trait profiles, which were transformed into estimates of personality disorders (PDs) and complex trait-based constructs based on expert profiles. Results suggest only modest agreement between Clinton and Trump voters on Trump’s personality. Clinton voters perceived much greater antagonism, …
