Estimation Of Connected Vehicle Penetration Rate On Indiana Roadways, Margaret Hunter, Jijo K. Mathew, Ed Cox, Matthew Blackwell, Darcy M. Bullock
JTRP Affiliated Reports
Over 400 billion passenger vehicle trajectory waypoints are collected each month in the United States. This data creates many new opportunities for agencies to assess operational characteristics of roadways for more agile management of resources. This study compared traffic counts obtained from 24 Indiana Department of Transportation traffic counts stations with counts derived by the vehicle trajectories during the same periods. These stations were geographically distributed throughout Indiana with 13 locations on interstates and 11 locations on state or US roads. A Wednesday and a Saturday in January, August, and September 2020 are analyzed. The results show that the analyzed …

An Integrated Critical Information Delivery Platform For Smart Segment Dissemination To Road Users, Lingxi Li, Yaobin Chen, Renren Tian, Feng Li, Howell Li, James R. Sturdevant
JTRP Technical Reports
An integrated critical information delivery platform for smart segment dissemination to road users was developed. A statewide baseline milepost geodatabase was created at 0.1-mile resolution with tools, protocols, and interfaces that allow other data sources to be efficiently utilized. A variety of data sources (e.g., INRIX, CARS, Doppler, camera images, connected vehicle data, automated vehicle location) were integrated into existing and new dashboards for stakeholders to monitor roadway conditions and after-action reviews. Additionally, based on these data sources, algorithms were developed and an API was created to identify hazardous road conditions when the location of the end-user mobile device was …

Sources Of Nutrition Information In Recreational Ultra-Marathon Runners: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Sara E. Mahoney, Thomas R. Wójcicki, Andrew J. Carnes
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Ultra-marathon events (i.e., .42.2-km) continue to grow in popularity; however, little is known regarding the sources of nutrition information which inform their beliefs and habits. The objective of this study was to characterize the acquisition of sport-specific nutrition information among ultra-endurance athletes using a mixed methods design. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups and analyzed using thematic analysis. Three primary higher order themes were identified: Optimal Diet for Ultra-Endurance Athletes, Common Sources of Information, and Barriers to Scientific Information. Then, a self-report inventory (Sources of Nutrition Information-SONI questionnaire) was developed to assess common sources of nutrition information and characterize …

The Evolution Of Political Rhetoric: The Year In C-Span Archives Research, Robert X. Browning
The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research
Volume 6 of The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research series focuses on the rapidly changing rhetoric coloring American politics. An increasingly polarized electorate combined with advances in technology have led to a combative and pitched rhetoric through more and more outlets. Each chapter is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on communication studies, political science, history, and other fields.
Using the extensive collection of the C-SPAN Video Library, chapters cover the highly visible Thomas and Kavanaugh judicial nomination hearings as well as the ongoing debate around impeachment. Other pieces focus on the rhetoric of the 2008 Wall Street crisis, presidential campaign announcements, …
Elementary Teachers’ Responsiveness To Supporting Students’ Engineering Design Feedback, Jeffrey Radloff, Brenda Capobianco
Elementary Teachers’ Responsiveness To Supporting Students’ Engineering Design Feedback, Jeffrey Radloff, Brenda Capobianco
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Using engineering design to teach science requires teachers to engage in noticing, interpreting, and responding to students’ needs in real-time. While research has begun to focus on how elementary teachers do so, less is known about how teachers instructionally support and optimize students’ ideas through engineering design feedback. In this study we investigate what instructional moves two elementary teachers’ employ to leverage students’ ideas and reasoning and create opportunities for students to exchange design feedback. Data were gathered using classroom observations of teachers’ implementations of a design task focused on sound and energy transformation. Observations were coded for teachers’ use …
Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu
Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper is a response to Hillis Miller’s query on the author’s essay “Hillis Miller on the End of Literature.” The author basically agrees with Miller’s view on the shift from print culture to digital culture, explaining the special cultural context under which Chinese scholars emphasize the visual turn. Based on the rapid development of Chinese online literature, the author points out that print culture does not rival but coexists with digital culture. On the other hand, drawing on Aristotle’s Poetics and insights of several leading figures of contemporary hermeneutics, the author contends that Miller’s dichotomy of poetics (form) and …

China Question Of Us-American Imagism, Qingben Li
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper investigates first the influences of ancient Chinese culture on Ezra Pound, and then Pound’s influence on the New Culture Movement of modern China (1917). It is a kind of circular journey of literary texts and theories from ancient China to the West and then back to China. This journey, or “circle model,” involves textual appropriation, variation, transformation and misunderstanding in every stage.
Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu
Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper examines the formation of modern historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism in terms of its interaction with and transformation of western theory. The discipline emerged during the eastward movement of Western ideas in the early twentieth century, promoting the “scientific study” of classical Chinese learning, and instituting curriculum and textbooks in Chinese universities. The reception of Western concepts of “literature” and “literary criticism” in the early twentieth century, largely through Japan, laid the very foundation of historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism as an independent subject of study. This paper argues that when adopting Western methods …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper discusses the reception and transformation of western theories of Culture Industry in China during the Reform Era (1978-present). It proposes the term 穿越 (chuanyue, traverse), rather than communication or traveling theory, in order to probe into the complexity of the interaction, modification and transformation of western theories of Culture Industry and creative industries in China. The paper focuses on 1) issues of time lag or disjunction, in that it took more than half a century for the critique of Culture Industry to enter China; 2) divergent interpretations of Culture Industry with a strong critical edge of …
Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu
Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper explores the notions of “Sinophone” and “Chinese-language cinema” under the rubrics of postcolonialism in Chinese film studies both in China and elsewhere around the world. The paper argues that these postcolonial-inspired notions misconstrue Chinese national identity building as imperialist/colonialist endeavours, and dichotomize Han and Chinese ethnic minorities. The paper offers its counterargument by examining cinematic practices of people’s cinema, minority nationality films and native-language films in the PRC.

Reflections On Political Policies And Statements In Arts And Literature In Prc, Jiangang Yang, Gongyan Jiang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper investigates the political policies and statements in arts and literature in the People’s Republic of China (1949-present). The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always taken arts and literature as essential parts of its political and ideological rule, and, as such, they constitute a distinct Chinese model or Chinese path in the studies of arts and literature in the modern world. This paper examines the four stages of the political discourse and statements of literature: (1) as an engine of the revolutionary machine in the Mao era (1949-76); (2) as an object of aesthetic appreciation in the decade of …
The Moscow-Yan’An-Beijing Mode Of Chinese Literary Theory, Song Li, Ping Liu
The Moscow-Yan’An-Beijing Mode Of Chinese Literary Theory, Song Li, Ping Liu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper examines the genealogy of Chinese literary theory under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), in terms of Moscow-Yan’an-Beijing Modes from the inception of the CCP to the present. The focus of this paper is the state-sanctioned textbooks of literary theory and criticism from the beginning of the PRC to the present. The story of these textbooks tells us as much about the complex entanglement of Chinese Marxism or Maoism with Soviet Marxism, i.e. Leninism and Stalinism in the Mao era as about the powerful, on-going impact of that ideological lineage today.

China’s reception of “Western Marxism” is a critical part of the global history of Marxism. This paper examines three aspects of the reception of Western Marxism in literary and art criticism during the early years of Mao’s China (1949-65): the Western Marxist critique of surrealism, debates over Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, and Sartrean existentialism and Western Marxism. The impacts of Western Marxist literary thought upon Chinese literary studies during the early years of the PRC are discussed, along with the extensive influx of Western Marxism that began in the reform era of post-Mao China (1978- ) …

The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin
The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Germany’s acceptance of its direct responsibility for the Holocaust has strengthened its relationship with Israel and has led to a deep commitment to combat antisemitism and rebuild Jewish life in Germany. As we draw close to a time when there will be no more firsthand experience of the horrors of the Holocaust, there is great concern about what will happen when German responsibility turns into history. Will the present taboo against open antisemitism be lifted as collective memory fades? There are alarming signs of the rise of the far right, which includes blatantly antisemitic elements, already visible in public discourse. …

In 2007, Apple released the iPhone under the direction of Steve Jobs. At the time people did not realize how revolutionary this invention would be. 13 years later, smartphones and other connected devices have completely permeated American society. According to Pew Research Center, in 2019 81% of Americans owned smartphones and 52% of Americans owned a tablet computer. Smartphones and other smart devices provide a large amount of convenience to their users, but the personal data stored on them presents a huge security risk.

Low Frequency Absorption Enhancement By Modification Of Poro-Elastic Layered Sound Package, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
For many years, industries have been searching for effective noise control solutions having cost effective features such as light weight and small volume. Conventional porous acoustical materials such as polymeric fibers, glass fibers and polyurethane foams fall into the category that meet most of these needs, but it is often said that these materials cannot provide effective absorption at low frequencies. Metamaterials or metasurfaces, on the other hand, have become popular recently due to their potential for nearly-perfect low frequency absorption performance. However, these materials still show obvious limitations regarding their implementation in industry due to their weight, volume, manufacturability …

Identification And Characterization Of Edible Cricket Peptides On Hypertensive And Glycemic In Vitro Inhibition And Their Anti-Inflammatory Activity On Raw 264.7 Macrophage Cells, Felicia Hall, Lavanya Reddivari, Andrea M. Liceaga
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Recent studies continue to demonstrate the potential of edible insects as a protein base to obtain bioactive peptides applicable for functional food development. This study aimed at identifying antihypertensive, anti-glycemic, and anti-inflammatory peptides derived from the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of cricket protein hydrolysates. After sequential fractionation, the protein digest subfraction containing the lowest molecular weight (<0.5 kDa), hydrophobic (C18) and cationic peptides (IEX) was found responsible for the most bioactivity. The cationic peptide fraction significantly reduced (p < 0.05) α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity in vitro, and also inhibited the expression of NF-κB in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. A total of 28 peptides were identified with mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and de novo sequencing from the potent fraction. Three novel peptides YKPRP, PHGAP, and VGPPQ were chosen for the molecular docking studies. PHGAP and VGPPQ exhibited a higher degree of non-covalent interactions with the enzyme active site residues and binding energies comparable to captopril. Results from this study demonstrate the bioactive potential of edible cricket peptides, especially as ACE inhibitors.
