Characterization Of River Discharge And Interaction With Shallow Groundwater Aquifers Along The Wabash River Using Seismological Methods, Jessica M. Cyr, Xiaotao Yang, Marty D. Frisbee
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
The interaction between shallow aquifers and local rivers in the West Lafayette, Indiana area remains poorly understood. While surface water levels in the Wabash River and its tributaries are monitored at several USGS stream gauges, groundwater fluctuations are less well documented. Methods using seismic recordings, sensitive to subtle ground vibrations and subsurface structure, provide an alternative to characterize groundwater levels and river discharge. This project analyzes the temporal variations of ambient noise seismic data, examining the relationship to USGS river discharge, precipitation records, and other environmental factors. We currently focus on 1) changes in maximum amplitudes and peak frequencies within …
The Transitional Human Being: Literary, Journalistic, And Cinematographic Representations Of The Twentieth- And The Twenty-First-Centuries Italy, Ron Kubati
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
This book analyzes the crisis of the idea of human being based on timeless notions, in the Euroamerican context, as seen primarily through literature and cinema. It focuses on Italy, which has been and remains a crossroads for diverse cultural and political currents—open to Mediterranean cultural influences while remaining within a typically Western cultural context. The “new man,” defined by Corrado Alvaro during his trip in Russia in 1934 as “transitional,” implies a human being with a fundamental need for change. Instead of the “new man,” Italo Calvino in the 1960 preface to his I nostri antenati wrote about the …

Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney
Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Current science indicates that warming and elevated atmospheric CO2 will have ambiguous results for crop productivity depending on crop type and geographic location, whereas increased heat stress makes livestock and human labor less productive. The differential impacts across regions will alter comparative advantage and shift the patterns of global trade. This paper employs an economywide trade model to assess all three types of productivity shocks under a 3°C global warming scenario. We find that the widening agricultural trade deficits persist, even as the overall US trade balance improves due to enhanced investment inflows.

Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This preliminary report explores insights about mechanisms of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) gained from a mathematical model of interconnected clusters of excitatory neurons. This local, integrate-and-fire, spiking neural network is subjected to random noise from other populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons outside the network. Its emergent behavior in response to different ratios of inhibitory to excitatory noise mimics several aspects of ASDs. The spiking neural network functions according to rules of classical neurophysiology, involving resting membrane potential, threshold potential, excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials, action potential, and refractory period. Key parameters include the incremental change in membrane potential, p …

Simple Probabilistic Method For Chloride Transport In Concrete, Jaehwan Kim, Sangki Park, Dong-Woo Seo, Ki-Tae Park, Joohyung Kim
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
It is a well-known fact that reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments suffer from reinforcement corrosion due to chloride ingress, which degrades the performance of the structure. To address this issue, reinforced concrete structures are designed and constructed to have a service life of more than 100 years, but to ensure safety or durability, it is necessary to accurately predict the onset of reinforcement corrosion. Various prediction models have been developed for chloride transport in concrete, including physically based models, with Fick's 2nd law being the most commonly used empirically based model for chloride penetration in concrete. However, the …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This study develops data-driven Pavement Condition Index (PCI) forecasting for rigid (jointed concrete) airfields to support maintenance planning, risk mitigation, and lifecycle analysis. Traditional PCI surveys per ASTM D5340 are manual, time-consuming, and subjective, motivating machine-learning alternatives. Using panel-level observations, five models predict next-year PCI from readily available variables: prior-year PCI, annual aircraft traffic, temperature, and rainfall. The models include ordinary least squares (linear), ridge, lasso, random forest (RF), and a feedforward artificial neural network (ANN). All models performed well on held-out validation data; the ANN was best, achieving 2 = 0.985, MSE = 0.286, MAE = 0.397, and RMSE …

Chloride ion transport behaviour has been reported to be significantly influenced by the use of supplementary cementing materials in concrete, both due to physical effects such as pore structure refinement and chemical effects including chloride binding. This paper provides experimental results on diffusion of chloride ions through concretes containing limestone calcined clay as a cement replacement material at ~50% replacement level, demonstrating the beneficial effects of high-volume replacement of cement with calcined clay. A numerical simulation framework that considers the pore structure of concrete, the concentration-dependence of diffusion coefficient, and Freundlich binding is also presented. The diffusion model is augmented …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Despite significant progress in digitalisation across various sectors, the development of data-driven applications in the built environment remains ongoing, with a focus on improving labour productivity and addressing global sustainability challenges. The circular economy framework for reusing and recycling construction materials is still underexplored. Metrics on the amount and impact of construction and demolition waste (CDW) highlight the need for more effective circularity strategies. Although the circular economy seeks to minimise waste, maximise material reuse, and reduce environmental impacts, practical implementation within the construction sector requires further development—an area where digital technologies can offer substantial support. This study introduces the …

3d Rbsm Conduit Model For Simulating Moisture Transport In Compressively Damaged Concrete, Dawei Ren, Kohei Nagai
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This study investigates the simulation of moisture transport in concrete under compressive damage using the 3D RBSM Conduit model. The model combines stress-strain responses from concrete compression experiments with detailed crack data, providing a realistic representation of crack development under varying load conditions. By implementing both unlubricated and lubricated compression tests, different failure modes were observed, influencing penetration patterns. Simulations show that the distribution of cracks significantly accelerates moisture penetration within the concrete. Notably, uniformly distributed cracks, typical of lubricated tests, facilitate deeper and faster moisture transport compared to more localized cracks observed in unlubricated tests. This study validates the …

Predicting The Chloride Penetration Of Sustainable Marine Concrete Using Data-Driven And Multiphysics Frameworks, Joya Rani Das, Taihao Han, Jie Huang, Kamal H. Khayat, Aditya Kumar
C3 Symposium 2025
Chloride penetration in sustainable reinforced concrete (RC) is a critical parameter for predicting and preventing infrastructure failure, particularly for marine applications. However, replicating natural environments and testing in actual infrastructure is challenging, making it difficult to accurately measure chloride concentration in RC. Additionally, the complexity of concrete mixture designs and environmental parameters hinders the development of a universal model to predict chloride concentration at various concrete depths. This study develops a data-driven approach to predict chloride concentrations at different depths and chloride diffusion coefficients in marine RC made with common supplementary cementitious materials (e.g. fly ash, slag, etc.) under varied …
A Mathematical Model For Co2 Capture Via Mineral Carbonation Using Hydrated Lime, Natalia Vidal De La Peña, Grégoire Léonard, Dominique Toye
A Mathematical Model For Co2 Capture Via Mineral Carbonation Using Hydrated Lime, Natalia Vidal De La Peña, Grégoire Léonard, Dominique Toye
C3 Symposium 2025
The construction sector contributes to approximately 37% of global GHG emissions. To mitigate this impact, this study develops a mathematical model to analyze CO2 capture via hydrated lime carbonation. The model integrates reaction kinetics, diffusion and heat balance, considering the effects of liquid water saturation, the influence of porosity on diffusion and the heat generated by both the reaction and water evaporation. For a specific case, the carbonation front and temperature gradient along the reactor are analyzed. Then, the model is validated, demonstrating promising results for optimizing future carbonation processes.
Fourier Analyses Of Optical Profilometry As An Inferential Measurement For Impact Coverage., Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort
Fourier Analyses Of Optical Profilometry As An Inferential Measurement For Impact Coverage., Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort
15th International Conference on Shot Peening
A critical consideration in peening process design is achieving sufficient impact coverage. Conventional methods for assessing coverage rely on manual inspection, which is time-consuming and poorly suited for automated control. In this work, we investigate the use of frequency-domain analysis to quantify surface modification in peened samples using optical profilometry (OP) data. Three-dimensional surface maps of Almen strips were acquired using a high-resolution OP system and analyzed via fast Fourier transform (FFT) to compute spatial power spectral densities (PSDs). PSD maps and radially averaged profiles reveal consistent amplification of harmonic components similar to the nominal particle size, with increasing intensity …
Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort
Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort
15th International Conference on Shot Peening
A common goal in shot peening research is to connect operational parameters to resultant residual stress fields, providing a means to control and optimize the effectiveness of surface treatment. In practice, experimental measurements of residual stresses are often averaged values over regions that are large in comparison to an impact dimple. In fact, the stochastic nature of impact locations leads to residual stress fields that are distributed. Finite element peening simulations confirm this observation. The goal of this report is to connect operational parameters to localized fluctuations in residual stress through probabilistic reasoning (Figure 1). In particular, the development of …
Hands-On Stem In Ghana: Inspiration For Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Globally, Alhassan Issifu, Mawuena A. Hanson, Heather R. Beem
Hands-On Stem In Ghana: Inspiration For Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Globally, Alhassan Issifu, Mawuena A. Hanson, Heather R. Beem
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Many educators are increasingly seeking culturally relevant pedagogies they can employ to effectively engage their students. In Ghana a substantive set of hands-on STEM content has been created, incorporating locally available materials and cultural approaches while maintaining alignment to the national curricula. Against a backdrop of almost no public primary or junior high schools in the country containing any lab equipment, this approach leverages and celebrates the abundance of what is available within the locality. This challenges narratives of what is considered “good” and recenters power back with those in the classroom. Three sample activities and three firsthand stories are …

Existing evidence highlights the significance of family STEM learning experiences during early childhood. However, there is a lack of research specific to early childhood family-based learning in the field of engineering, especially with preschool-age children (three to five years old). To address this gap and inform engineering education programs for young children, we conducted a design-based research study in collaboration with 15 Spanish-and English-speaking families with preschool-age children from low-income communities. Our study aimed to develop and test a series of family-based engineering design activities while also identifying underlying design principles. Guided by an asset-based family learning framework, which acknowledges …

The University of North Dakota (UND) adopted unleaded aviation fuel (UL94) for approximately a four-month period in the summer and early fall of 2023. The UL94 fuel was used in all reciprocating engine fleets based at the university’s primary training airport, Grand Forks International Airport in North Dakota. During the operational implementation of UL94, the UND flew 46,600 flight hours, consuming 386,778 gallons of fuel across all fleets powered by Lycoming engines. After approximately two months of using UL94, operational reports and maintenance inspections began to indicate potential for exhaust valve seat recession (EVSR), although early indications were limited in …
Research Synthesis Of Predicting Part 135 Accident Probability In Aviation: How The Bayesian Brain Ignores Declining Safety Standards, Jonathan R. Clarke
Research Synthesis Of Predicting Part 135 Accident Probability In Aviation: How The Bayesian Brain Ignores Declining Safety Standards, Jonathan R. Clarke
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Technological innovation has had an enormous effect on safety in aviation. However, in Part 135 operations, where technology is not as ubiquitous, the accident rates have plateaued. Human error is constantly misrepresented as being responsible for 70–80 percent of accidents, when it is clearly only one of several contributing factors. In commercial aviation, all accidents should be considered organizational failures, because by definition all defensive layers have been breached. Organizational failure, as it affects safety, should be identifiable and predictable from organizational behavior. Inevitably, in the aftermath of accidents the warning signs of poor behavior are seemingly obvious, yet there …

A Deep Learning Framework With Explainable Ai For Atmospheric Blocking Detection And Interpretation, Devansh Khandelwal
A Deep Learning Framework With Explainable Ai For Atmospheric Blocking Detection And Interpretation, Devansh Khandelwal
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Atmospheric blocking is a large-scale quasi-stationary phenomenon in mid-latitude circulation, characterized by persistent high-pressure systems that disrupt the typical west-to-east flow of the jet stream. These systems can cause extreme weather events—such as heatwaves, cold spells, or droughts—that persist for days or even weeks. This study proposes a deep learning framework to predict and interpret the occurrence of atmospheric blocking by integrating geophysical precursors such as geopotential height (Z500), stream function (SF200), and potential vorticity. These features, which are dynamically linked to blocking onset and persistence, serve as inputs to a Convolutional Neural Network model trained on the CESM Large …
