Some Useful Coding Techniques For Binary Communication Systems, J. C. Hancock, J. L. Holsinger Jan 1962

Some Useful Coding Techniques For Binary Communication Systems, J. C. Hancock, J. L. Holsinger

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An introduction to coding theory and a discussion of specific coding techniques are given as applied to digital communication systems. The place of coding in a communication system is illustrated and the various approaches to coding are discussed. The information theory concepts required are presented along with the First and Second Fundamental Theorems of Shannon, The relation between Shannon’s theorems and coding for the noisy and noiseless channel is discussed. For the noiseless channel the techniques of Shannon, Fano, Huffman, Gilbert-More, Karp and others are discussed. For the noisy channel, the techniques of Hamming, Slepian, Elias, Cowell, Bose-Chaudhuri, Reed-Muller, Fire, …

Two Dimensional Signal Representation Using Prolate Spheroidal Functions, G. R. Cooper, D. A. Landgrebe Jan 1962

Two Dimensional Signal Representation Using Prolate Spheroidal Functions, G. R. Cooper, D. A. Landgrebe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The most widely used methods of signal representation are the time function and the frequency function or spectrum representations. This work is concerned with the development of a representation which is a combination of these two. Two previous attempts at defining this type of signal representation, which is referred to as two dimensional representation, have been made and a summary and evaluation of these attempts is presented. The primary objective of the work reported here was to develop a practical two dimensional representation which has the desired two dimensional conceptual properties as well as mathematical convenience. The representations defined are …

Specification And Data Presentation In Linear Control Systems-Part Two, John E. Gibson, Eccles S. Mcvey, C. D. Leedham, Rekasius Z. V., Schultz D. G., Sridhar R. May 1961

Specification And Data Presentation In Linear Control Systems-Part Two, John E. Gibson, Eccles S. Mcvey, C. D. Leedham, Rekasius Z. V., Schultz D. G., Sridhar R.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This is the second part of a 2 volume report on the specification and data presentation in linear control systems. This volume deals with Sample Data Systems, Linear Time Variable Parameter Systems, and Performance Indices, which are respectively Chapter II, III, and IV of the volume. Since these subjects are somewhat unrelated, a separate abstract is given at the beginning of each chapter, with the exception of the introductory Chapter I. The separate chapter abstracts are repeated here for the convenience of the reader. Abstract - Linear Sampled Data Control Systems The specifications recommended, for use with sampled data control …

Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems By The Second Method Of Liapunov, John E. Gibson, Eccles S. Mcvey, C. D. Leedham, Rekasius Z. V., Schultz D. G., Sridhar R. May 1961

Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems By The Second Method Of Liapunov, John E. Gibson, Eccles S. Mcvey, C. D. Leedham, Rekasius Z. V., Schultz D. G., Sridhar R.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report investigates the stability of autonomous closed-loop control systems containing nonlinear elements. An n-th order nonlinear autonomous system is described by a set of n first order differential equations of the type dxi/dt=xi(x1, x2, …xn) i=1,2,…n. Liapunov's second (direct) method is used in the stability analysis of such systems. This method enables one to prove that a system is stable (or unstable) if a function V=V (x1, x2, … xn) can be found which, together with its time derivative, satisfies the requirements of Liapunov's stability (or instability) theorems. At the present time, there are no generally applicable straight forward …

Limits On The Identification Time For Linear Systems, G. R. Cooper, J. C. Lindenbaud Feb 1961

Limits On The Identification Time For Linear Systems, G. R. Cooper, J. C. Lindenbaud

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem, of estimating the impulse response of a linear system arises is adaptive, control problems and elsewhere. Often it is necessary to make the system identification in the presence of external noise disturbances. This work considers the problem of determining the time that is necessary to estimate the impulse response of a linear system with a specified variance. It is assumed that' essentially no a priori knowledge about the unknown system is available, and that the output signal of the system is corrupted by an additive stationary noise signal. An ideal identifier is defined as a device that yields, …

A Class Of Predictive Adaptive Controls, John E. Gibson, J. S. Meditch Feb 1961

A Class Of Predictive Adaptive Controls, John E. Gibson, J. S. Meditch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A new class of control systems termed predictive adaptive controls is developed and the performance characteristics are investigated analytically and experimentally. The concepts of signal prediction, interval control, and synthesis of the control variable by a sum of orthonormal polynomials in t are introduced and developed in relation to adaptive control. A modified least squares integral index of performance is formulated and used as the criterion for system optimization. Control of dynamic processes is subdivided into intervals of a specified length T and prediction is used to obtain estimates of future values of system error. Minimization of the index of …

The Scattering Of A Plane Electromagnetic Wave By A Finite Cone, C. C. Rogers, F. V. Schultz Aug 1960

The Scattering Of A Plane Electromagnetic Wave By A Finite Cone, C. C. Rogers, F. V. Schultz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper treats the solution of the -vector Helmholtz equation for the case of a plane electromagnetic wave at ’nose-on' incidence, on a perfectly-conducting cone of finite size* The solution presented is exact and in the form of an infinite series of spherical harmonics. The expansion coefficients of the series are determined by a set of an infinite number of equations involving an infinite number of unknowns. A discussion and numerical investigation of the field singularities at the tip and edge of the cone are included* as well as graphs of the associated Legendre functions of non-integral degree, P1(cos θ), …

A Survey Of The Philosophy And State Of The Art Of Adaptive Systems, G. R. Cooper, Gibson J. E., Eveleigh V. W., Lindenlaub J. C., Meditch J. S., Raible R. H. Jul 1960

A Survey Of The Philosophy And State Of The Art Of Adaptive Systems, G. R. Cooper, Gibson J. E., Eveleigh V. W., Lindenlaub J. C., Meditch J. S., Raible R. H.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This is a preliminary report on the state of the art of adaptive control. It in no way attempts to review all of the various adaptive systems which have been proposed or constructed® Probably the most complete effort in this direction is WADC TR 59-49# The Proceedings of the Self Adaptive Flight Control Systems Symposium, Edited by P. C. Gregory® Rather this report attempts a synthesis of the present philosophy on adaptive control and is essentially a definition of the problem® The report attempts to subdivide the adaptive control problem into three subdivisions and to assess present progress in each …
