Estimation Of Time-Varying Correlation Functions, G. R. Cooper, Helmut Berndt Mar 1963

Estimation Of Time-Varying Correlation Functions, G. R. Cooper, Helmut Berndt

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The need for estimating the auto- or crosscorrelation functions of nonstationary random processes frequently arises in communication and self-adaptive systems. In most situations only one sample function can he observed over finite time. It is the purpose of this work to establish a firm theoretical basis for such a measurement of time-varying correlation functions, and the emphasis here is on suitable estimation procedures rather than specific measurement techniques. Second order stochastic processes are used as a mathematical model. The minimum mean square error between a weighted time average and the true (ensemble average) correlation function is investigated. This procedure leads …

An Analysis Of Traffic Accidents On County Roads, D. F. Petty, H. L. Michael Dec 1962

An Analysis Of Traffic Accidents On County Roads, D. F. Petty, H. L. Michael

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

The purpose of this research was to investigate the causes of and determine possible remedies for the rising number of county road accidents in Indiana. County road accidents were defined for the purpose of this study as all traffic accidents occurring on roads which are administered by the County Commissioners in Indiana except accidents occurring at intersections of county roads with state highways. These latter accidents are normally charged to state highways. The information used in this research was obtained from accident records. The best available source of this type of information, the accident reports which are filed at the …

Describing Function Inversion: Theory And Computational Techniques, John E. Gibson, E. G. Di Tada, J. C. Hill, Ibrahim E. S.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In the last few years the study of nonlinear mechanics has received the attention of numerous investigators, either under the scope of pure mathematics or from the engineering point of view. Many of the recent developments are based on the early works of H. Poincare [1] and A. Liapunov [2] As examples can be cited the perturbation method, harmonic balance, the second method of Liapunov, etc. An approximate technique developed almost simultaneously by C. Goldfarb [3] in the USSR, A. Tustin [4] in England, R. Kochenburger [5] in the USA, W, Oppelt [6] in Germany and J. Dutilh [7] and …

County Subdivision Control: Model Ordinance With Discussion, William Joseph Head Jul 1962

County Subdivision Control: Model Ordinance With Discussion, William Joseph Head

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

The purpose of this manual is to impress upon the reader the urgent need for sound planning and to show what tools are available to facilitate the job of planning and (2) to provide a rough framework, a "model subdivision ordinance," around which a county can build a subdivision ordinance tailored to its particular needs and circumstances.

It must be emphasized that the values appearing in this manual are only typical minimal values. The model ordinance is quite general—any county wishing to adopt this ordinance would be obliged to initiate a study to determine to what extent the model ordinance …

Electromagnetic Propagation Velocities In An Inhomogeneous Or Random Atmosphere, G. R. Cooper, Robert Eugene Harrison Jul 1962

Electromagnetic Propagation Velocities In An Inhomogeneous Or Random Atmosphere, G. R. Cooper, Robert Eugene Harrison

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This thesis is concerned primarily with determination of statistics for the velocities of propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a dispersive medium. The velocities of propagation are discussed in terms of a plane travelling wave solution of Maxwell's equations obtained using the multiple Laplace transformation and complex inversion integrals. The types of dispersion discussed correspond to a magneto-ionic, electron displacement and polar resonances of the ionosphere and troposphere. The physical nature of the randomness of the dispersive index of refraction is derived from considerations of statistical turbulence theory. Expressions are then obtained for determining the mean, mean square and variance …

Correlation Receivers Minimizing Intersymbol Interference, J. C. Hancock, J. M. Aein Jul 1962

Correlation Receivers Minimizing Intersymbol Interference, J. C. Hancock, J. M. Aein

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem considered here is that of binary pulse communication operating in a white noise environment -wherein interfering signal pulses are generated by any of the following causes t (1) A signaling rate larger than channel bandwidths, causing pulse spill over into succeeding bands. (2) Go-channel interference or cross talk on carrier systems. (3) Signal echoes or reflections due to antenna location or mismatch of high frequency components. The optimum correlation receiver is found to be a linear combination of the desired signal pulse plus the interfering pulse. In severe cases significant improvement can be had over a correlation receiver …

On The Application Of Liapunov’S Second Method To The Stability Analysis Of Time-Invariant Control Systems, G. P. Szego May 1962

On The Application Of Liapunov’S Second Method To The Stability Analysis Of Time-Invariant Control Systems, G. P. Szego

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The investigation of the stability properties of the equilibrium point of a control system poses various problems -which, even if conceptually very similar, vary greatly in difficulty and in the methods appropriate for their solutions. The first and easier problem is what we may call the stability analysis of a completely defined system: given a particular control system to decide what stability properties its equilibrium point has. The second problem deals with a system having a fixed configuration but with parameters whose numerical values are to be determined. The problem is to find the boundaries in the parameter space at …

Binary Communication Systems Using Wideband Signals (Final Report V.Ii), J. C. Hancock, W. D. Wade May 1962

Binary Communication Systems Using Wideband Signals (Final Report V.Ii), J. C. Hancock, W. D. Wade

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

It has been pointed out that communication systems having wideband signal waveforms have certain advantages over the conventional narrowband systems. This report describes the results of a research program which examined in detail the information efficiency of wideband systems. The results presented in this report fall into three major categories: (1) analysis of systems utilizing linear receivers (i.e. synchronous receivers , etc.), (2) analysis of system utilizing non-linear receivers, and (3) analysis and description of methods which can be used for realizing certain optimum and sub-optimum wideband receivers. The development of these topics is based on the geometrical concept of …

A Wideband Adaptive Communication System, J. C. Hancock, W. C. Lindsey May 1962

A Wideband Adaptive Communication System, J. C. Hancock, W. C. Lindsey

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The concept of an open loop Adaptive Communication link is established as one which is capable of monitoring the medium through which it must perform while simultaneously transmitting information and continuously adjusting its modes of operation so as to optimize its performance with respect to a performance criterion chosen a priori. Statistical methods are applied to the adaptive communication problem. Communicating through a random multipath channel with additive noise is considered. The transmitter is specified as one which transmits one of two possible noise-like waveforms which are assumed to be known at the receiver. At any time, it is postulated …

An analytical study of bulk semiconductor conversion of microwave is presented. However, the material used for the experimental part of the project is not satisfactory for use at microwave frequencies. The …

The Variable Gradient Method Of Generating Liapunov Functions With Application To Automatic Control Systems, John E. Gibson, D. G. Schultz Apr 1962

The Variable Gradient Method Of Generating Liapunov Functions With Application To Automatic Control Systems, John E. Gibson, D. G. Schultz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The contribution of this thesis is the introduction and development of the variable gradient method of generating Liapunov functions. A Liapunov function, V, is considered to be generated if the form of V is not known before the generating procedure is applied. Two previous attempts at the generation of Liapunov functions to prove global asymptotic stability for nonlinear autonomous systems have been made. These attempts are summarized and evaluated in some detail, as they form the basis for the variable gradient approach proposed in this thesis. It is assumed that the system whose stability is being investigated is represented by …
