Vectorized Circuit, Yi-Xiang Wang, Kai Hwang Feb 1985

Vectorized Circuit, Yi-Xiang Wang, Kai Hwang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report, a newly modified Newton algorithm (MNA) and a data structure for sparse matrix manipulation are presented for analyzing large-scale electronic circuits on the Cyber-205 supercomputer. The MNA is improved from the Multilevel Newton Algorithm (ML NA) developed by Rabbat Sanjiovanni-Vincentelli, and Hsieh (1979). The time complexity and convergence rate of MNA are analyzed. The computation steps are shown in detail by some example circuits. Scalar and vectorized simulation programs have been tested run on a VAX 11/780 Scalar machine and on the Cyber 205 vector processor at Purdue University. From the results obtained, we observe that the …

Imaging With Diffraction Tomography, Malcolm Slaney, A. C. Kak Feb 1985

Imaging With Diffraction Tomography, Malcolm Slaney, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem of cross sectional (tomographic) imaging bf objects with diffracting sources is addressed. Specifically the area of investigation is the effect of multiple scattering and attenuation phenomena in diffraction imaging. This work reviews the theory and limits of first order diffraction tomography and studies iterative techniques that can be used to improve the quality of tomographic imaging with diffracting sources. Conventional (straight-ray) tomographic algorithms are not valid when used with acoustic or microwave energy. Thus more sophisticated algorithms are needed; First order diffraction tomography uses a linearized version of the wave equation and gives an especially simple reconstruction algorithm. …

Politics And Scholarship In Seventeenth-Century France: The Library Of Nicolas Fouquet And The College Royal, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of finance for Louis XIV, created in the 1650s a library second only to Cardinal Mazarin's in its size, scope, and scholarly content. Inherited from his father in 1640 and built at first around Fouquet' s personal interests in history and belles-lettres, it was greatly expanded in the late 1650s to accommodate the needs of the scholars and men of letters attached to Fouquet and to add luster to his political career as the successor to Mazarin. Fouquet, however, never succeeded Mazarin as first minister but was imprisoned by Louis XIV as a result of a power …

Multisource Data Analysis In Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Processing, Philip H. Swain, John A. Richards, Tong Lee Jan 1985

Multisource Data Analysis In Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Processing, Philip H. Swain, John A. Richards, Tong Lee

LARS Technical Reports

A general approach is presented for the computer analysis, using quantitative multivariate methods, of remote sensing data combined with other sources of data in geographic information systems. A method is proposed by which inferences can be drawn systematically from multiple observations having significant but unknown interactions. A simple classification experiment with Landsat MSS data is undertaken to illustrate the use of this method.

Use Of Combined Systemic Hypothermia And Local Heat Treatment To Enhance Temperature Differences Between Tumor And Normal Tissues, Charles F. Babbs, William D. Voorhees Iii, Robert R. Clark, David P. Dewitt Jan 1985

Use Of Combined Systemic Hypothermia And Local Heat Treatment To Enhance Temperature Differences Between Tumor And Normal Tissues, Charles F. Babbs, William D. Voorhees Iii, Robert R. Clark, David P. Dewitt

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The feasibility of combining local heat treatment with wholebody hypothermia in an effort to improve therapeutic gain was assessed. Superficial, non perfused phantom tumors were fashioned in eight anesthetized mongrel dogs by transplantation of the spleen from the abdomen to a subcutaneous site on the hind limb. After pretreatment of the animal with the vasodilator hydralazine (0.5 mg/kg, IV) to enhance normal tissue perfusion, the spleen implant was heated with a 2450-MHz microwave diathermy apparatus, first with the animal's core body temperature in the normal range (39°C) and then after the animal had been packed in ice to reduce core …

Dynamic Studies Of Multiterminal Dc-Ac Systems, Alireza Hamzei-Nejad, C. M. Ong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In transient stability programs that use a static dc network representation, the procedure to determine the control mode of operation and the solution of the multiterminal dc system is complex and time consuming. A systematic approach that is based on a linear programming formulation is presented in this thesis. The constraints incorporated in the LB formulation automatically ensure that the solution obtained is feasible. It is shown that the method is not only computationally efficient but also versatile in its ability to handle many of the common control characteristics, such as those of the constant angle (extinction and ignition), constant …

Parallel Algorithms For Isolated And Connected Word Recognition, Mark Alan Yoder, Leah H. Jamieson Dec 1984

Parallel Algorithms For Isolated And Connected Word Recognition, Mark Alan Yoder, Leah H. Jamieson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

For years researchers have worked toward finding a way to allow people to talk to machines in the same manner a person communicates to another person. This verbal man to machine interface, called speech recognition, can be grouped into three types: isolated word recognition, connected word recognition, and continuous speech recognition. Isolated word recognizers recognize single words with distinctive pauses before and after them. Continuous speech recognizers recognize speech spoken as one person speaks to another, continuously without pauses. Connected word recognition is an extension of isolated word recognition which recognizes groups of words spoken continuously. A group of words …
