Shape Recovery From Robot Contour Tracking With Force Feedback, Shaheen Ahmad, Chuan N. Lee Mar 1990

Shape Recovery From Robot Contour Tracking With Force Feedback, Shaheen Ahmad, Chuan N. Lee

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we describe a process for shape recovery from robot contour-tracking operations with force feedback. Shape recovery is an important task for self-teaching robots and for exploratory operations in unknown environments. An algorithm which directs a position controlled robot around an unknown planar contour using the steady state contact force information is described in this paper. The shape recovery from the planar contouring is not a trivial problem. It is experimentally found that there is significant distortion of the original contour if direct kinematics is used to recover the object’s shape, as we are unable to recover the …

Adaptive Control Of Flexible Joint Robots Derived From Arm Energy Considerations, Shaheen Ahmad, Fouad Mrad Feb 1990

Adaptive Control Of Flexible Joint Robots Derived From Arm Energy Considerations, Shaheen Ahmad, Fouad Mrad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Almost all industrial robots exhibit joint flexibility due to mechanical compliance of their gear boxes. In this paper we outline a design of an adaptive controller for flexible joint robots based on the arms energy. The desired actuator trajectory in a flexible joint robot is dependent not only on the desired kinematic trajectory of the link but also on the link dynamics. Unfortunately, link dynamic parameters are unknown in most cases, as a result the desired actuator trajectory is also unknown. To overcome this difficulty, a number of control schemes have suggested the use of acceleration and link jerk feedback. …

Simulation Of Free Radical Reactions In Biology And Medicine: A New Two-Compartment Kinetic Model Of Intracellular Lipid Peroxidation, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa Gale Steiner Jan 1990

Simulation Of Free Radical Reactions In Biology And Medicine: A New Two-Compartment Kinetic Model Of Intracellular Lipid Peroxidation, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa Gale Steiner

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

To explore mechanisms of free radical reactions leading to intracellular lipid peroxidation in living systems, we developed a computational model of up to 109 simultaneous enzymatic and free radical reactions thought to be involved in the initiation, propagation, and termination of membrane lipid peroxidation. Rate constants for the various reactions were obtained from the published literature. The simulation model included a lipid membrane compartment and an aqueous cytosolic compartment, between which various chemical species were partitioned. Lipid peroxidation was initiated by the iron-catalyzed, superoxide-driven Fenton reaction. A "C"-language computer program implemented numerical solution of the steady-state rate equations for concentrations …

Static Scheduling For Barrier Mimd Architectures, Abderrazek Zaafrani, Henry G. Dietz, Matthew T. O'Keefe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Barrier MIMDs are asynchronous Multiple Instruction stream Multiple Data stream architectures capable of parallel execution of variable-execution-time instructions and arbitrary control flow (e.g., w h ile loops and calls); however, they differ from conventional MIMDs in that the need for run-time synchronization is significantly reduced. Whenever a group of processors within a barrier MIMD encounters a synchronization point (barrier), static timing constraints become precise, hence, conceptual synchronizations between the processors often can be statically resolved with zero cost — as in a SIMD or VLIW and using similar compiler technology. Unlike these machines, however, as execution continues past the synchronization …
