The Testing Culture And The Persistence Of High Stakes Testing Reforms, Michele S. Moses, Michael J. Nanna

Education and Culture

The purposes of this critical analysis are to clarify why high stakes testing reforms have become so prevalent in the United States and to explain the connection between current federal and state emphases on standardized testing reforms and educational opportunities. The article outlines the policy context for high stakes examinations, as well as the ideas of testing and accountability as major tenets of current education reform and policy. In partial explanation of the widespread acceptance and use of standardized tests in the United States, we argue that there is a pervasive testing culture, in addition to other contributing factors such …

RCHE Reports

Abstract: With start-up funding provided by the Regenstrief Foundation,Purdue University has created the Regenstrief Center for HealthcareEngineering (RCHE) to design, implement, and sustain interdisciplinarysolutions to improve the safety, quality, efficiency and accessibility ofhealthcare delivery systems. RCHE’s primary goal is to bring a systems- analysis approach to improving the processes of healthcare delivery, not toprovide tools or techniques for medical research, diagnosis, or treatment. Thisarticle will describe RCHE’s business model; that is, how RCHE ‘engineers’ interdisciplinary solutions, using the multiple perspectives of healthcare andmultiple project time scales to organise and leverage healthcare deliverytransformation. We then illustrate the model through the description …

Airline Quality Rating 2007, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley Apr 2007

Airline Quality Rating 2007, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2007, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for calendar year 2006. AQR scores for 2006 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2007 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic scheduled-service passenger revenue during 2006. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

Jitter-Minimized Reliability-Maximized Joint Optimization Quality-Of-Service Routing For Gps Networks, Waseem Sheikh, Arif Ghafoor Mar 2007

Jitter-Minimized Reliability-Maximized Joint Optimization Quality-Of-Service Routing For Gps Networks, Waseem Sheikh, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We propose a joint optimization framework for quality-of-service (QoS) routing with resource allocation in a generalized processor sharing (GPS) network. Our joint optimization framework provides a convenient way of maximizing the reliability or minimizing the jitter delay of paths. Data traffic is sensitive to droppage at buffers while it can tolerate jitter delay. On the other hand multimedia traffic can tolerate loss but it is very sensitive to jitter delay. Depending on the type of data, our scheme provides a convenient way of selecting the parameters which result in either reliabilty maximization or jitter minimization. We solve the optimization problem …

Integration Of Hydrogels With Hard And Soft Microstructures, Ming Li, Babak Ziaie, Eric Nuxoll, Kristóf Iván, Ronald A. Siegel

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Hydrogels, i.e., water-swollen polymer networks, have been studied and utilized for decades. These materials can either passively support mass transport, or can actively respond in their swelling properties, enabling modulation of mass and fluid transport, and chemomechanical actuation. Response rates increase with decreasing hydrogel dimension. In this paper, we present three examples where incorporation of hydrogels into solid microstructures permits acceleration of their response, and also provides novel functional capabilities. In the first example, a hydrogel is immobilized inside microfabricated pores within a thin silicon membrane. This hydrogel does not have a swelling response under the conditions investigated, but under …

Characteristics Of An Evaporating Thin Film In A Microchannel, Hao Wang, S V. Garimella, Jayathy Y. Murthy Jan 2007

Characteristics Of An Evaporating Thin Film In A Microchannel, Hao Wang, S V. Garimella, Jayathy Y. Murthy

CTRC Research Publications

An evaporating meniscus in a microchannel is investigated through an augmented Young–Laplace model and the kinetic theory-based expression for mass transport across a liquid–vapor interface. The complete expression for mass transport is employed without any approximations and boundary conditions for the film profile are developed. The thin film and the intrinsic-meniscus regions are distinguished based on the disjoining pressure variation along the meniscus. While heat transfer in the thin-film region is found to be relatively insensitive to channels larger than a few micrometers in radius, that in the intrinsic meniscus is quite sensitive to channel size. The role of evaporation …

Transactional Economics: John Dewey's Ways Of Knowing And The Radical Subjectivism Of The Austrian School, Robert Mulligan Jan 2007

Transactional Economics: John Dewey's Ways Of Knowing And The Radical Subjectivism Of The Austrian School, Robert Mulligan

Education and Culture

The radical subjectivism of the Austrian school of economics is a special case of Dewey’s ways of knowing. Austrian economists adopted an Aristotelian deductive approach to economic issues such as social behavior and exchange. In Dewey’s contrasting view, the scientist commends new, alternative ways of knowing to the scientific community, offering more profound insight or more efficacious practical applications. Alternative ways of knowing which do not offer practical or intellectual benefits are to be rejected. Dewey’s transactional strategy, asserting knowledge as ways of knowing, suggests a broader and more fundamental critique of the socialist position in the calculation debate. The …

Experimental And Computational Studies Of Temperature Gradient Driven Molecular Transport In Gas Flows Through Nano/Micro-Scale Channels, Yen-Lin Han, Alina A. Alexeenko, Marcus Young, Eric Phillip Muntz

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Studies at the University of Southern California have shown that an unconventional solid-state device, the Knudsen Compressor, can be operated as a micro-scale pump or compressor. The critical components of Knudsen Compressors are gas transport membranes, which can be formed from porous materials or densely packed parallel arrays of channels. An applied temperature gradient across a transport membrane creates a thermal creep pumping action. Experimental and computational techniques that have been developed for the investigations will be discussed. Experimental studies of membranes formed from machined aerogels, activated by radiant heating, have been used to investigate thermal creep flows. In computational …

Natural Focusing Of X Rays From Ferroelectric Lithium Niobate Wafers, S. Durbin, T. Jach, S. Kim, V. Gopalan Jan 2007

Natural Focusing Of X Rays From Ferroelectric Lithium Niobate Wafers, S. Durbin, T. Jach, S. Kim, V. Gopalan

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The interaction of waves with inhomogeneous media leads to the natural focusing of light, the channelling of waves into stable caustics. We have extended natural focusing to x rays, observing caustics in topographs of ferroelectric lithium niobate. Voltage across domains of reversed polarity induces perturbations to the local crystal planes, producing dramatic variations in the images. Ray tracing shows a "catastrophic" discontinuity, causing bright focal lines. Analysis reveals details of boundary strains and local ferroelectric properties. Controlled focusing could be extended to designed domain patterns to probe microstructural properties, and also to a type of voltage-controlled ferroelectric optics for x …
