Device physics and material science meet at the atomic scale of novel nanostructured semiconductors, and the distinction between new device or new material is blurred. Not only the quantum-mechanical effects in the electronic states of the device but also the granular atomistic representation of the underlying material are important. Approaches based on a continuum representation of the underlying material typically used by device engineers and physicists become invalid. Ab initio methods used by material scientists typically do not represent the band gaps and masses precisely enough for device design, or they do not scale to realistically large device sizes. The …

Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman
Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman proposes in his article "Chaos Theory and Literature from an Existentialist Perspective" that in literature the relation, principles, and processes of chaos and order can be analyzed from an existentialist perspective. Chaos lies at the heart of nothingness and order is the appearance of the achievement it tries to realize, temporary it may seem. Aman argues that with the application of chaos theory to works of literature may yield new insight and applies in his paper aspects of chaos theory reading three literary works which represent three different literatures and cultures, namely Arabic, English, and French. …
Dynamics Of Tapping Mode Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquids: Theory And Experiments, Sudipta Basak, Arvind Raman
Dynamics Of Tapping Mode Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquids: Theory And Experiments, Sudipta Basak, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
A mathematical model is presented to predict the oscillating dynamics of atomic force microscope cantilevers with nanoscale tips tapping on elastic samples in liquid environments. Theoretical simulations and experiments performed in liquids using low stiffness probes on hard and soft samples reveal that, unlike in air, the second flexural mode of the probe is momentarily excited near times of tip-sample contact. The model also predicts closely the tip amplitude and phase of the tip at different set points.

Towards A Thermal Moore’S Law, Shankar Krishnan, S V. Garimella, Gregory M. Chrysler, Ravi V. Mahajan
CTRC Research Publications
Thermal design power trends and power densities for present and future single-core microprocessors are investigated. These trends are derived based on Moore’s law and scaling theory. Both active and stand-by power are discussed and accounted for in the calculations. A brief discussion of various leakage power components and their impact on the power density trends is provided. Two different lower limits of heat dissipation for irreversible logic computers that have previously appeared in the literature are discussed. These are based on the irreversibility of logic to represent one bit of information, and on the distribution of electrons to represent a …

Coupled Mode Space Approach For The Simulation Of Realistic Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Gianluca Fiori, Giuseppe Iannaccone, Gerhard Klimeck
Other Nanotechnology Publications
A coupled mode space approach within the nonequiibriurn Green's function formalism is presented, which allows to perform simulations of realistic carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNT-FETs) with no spatial symmetry. Computing :time is significantly reduced with respect to the real space ap)roach, since only few modes are needed in order to obtain accurate results. The advantage of the method increases with increasing nanotube diameter, and is a factor of 20 in computing time for a (25,0) nanotube. As a consequence, comoutationally demanding simulations like those required by a statistical investigation, or by a device performance study based on the exploration of …
Group Decision-Making On An Optimal Stopping Problem, Michael D. Lee, Michael J. Paradowski
Group Decision-Making On An Optimal Stopping Problem, Michael D. Lee, Michael J. Paradowski
The Journal of Problem Solving
We consider group decision-making on an optimal stopping problem, for which large and stable individual differences have previously been established. In the problem, people are presented with a sequence of five random numbers between 0 and 100, one at a time, and are required to choose the maximum of the sequence, without being allowed to return to earlier values in the sequence. We examine group decision-making on these problems in an experimental setting where group members are isolated from one another, and interact solely via networked computers. The group members register their initial accept or reject decision for each value …

Measuring Human Performance On Clustering Problems: Some Potential Objective Criteria And Experimental Research Opportunities, Michael Brusco
Measuring Human Performance On Clustering Problems: Some Potential Objective Criteria And Experimental Research Opportunities, Michael Brusco
The Journal of Problem Solving
The study of human performance on discrete optimization problems has a considerable history that spans various disciplines. The two most widely studied problems are the Euclidean traveling salesperson problem and the quadratic assignment problem. The purpose of this paper is to outline a program of study for the measurement of human performance on discrete optimization problems related to clustering of points in the two-dimensional plane. I describe possible objective criteria for clustering problems, the measurement of agreement of solutions produced by subjects, and categories of experiments for investigating human performance on clustering problems.

Numerically Stable Algorithms For Inversion Of Block Tridiagonal And Banded Matrices, Jitesh Jain, Hong Li, Stephen Cauley, Cheng-Kok Koh, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan
Numerically Stable Algorithms For Inversion Of Block Tridiagonal And Banded Matrices, Jitesh Jain, Hong Li, Stephen Cauley, Cheng-Kok Koh, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We provide a new representation for the inverse of block tridiagonal and banded matrices. The new representation is shown to be numerically stable over a variety of block tridiagonal matrices, in addition of being more computationally efficient than the previously proposed techniques. We provide two algorithms for commonly encountered problems that illustrate the usefulness of the results.
Optimal Dynamic Buffer Management Using Optimal Control Of Hybrid Systems, Wei Zhang, Jianghai Hu
Optimal Dynamic Buffer Management Using Optimal Control Of Hybrid Systems, Wei Zhang, Jianghai Hu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This paper studies a dynamic buffer management problem with one buffer inserted between two interacting components. The component to be controlled is assumed to have multiple power modes corresponding to different data processing rates. The overall system is modeled as a hybrid system and the buffer management problem is formulated as an optimal control problem. Different from many previous studies, the objective function of the proposed problem depends on the switching cost and the size of the continuous state space, making its solutions much more challenging. By exploiting some particular features of the problem, the best mode sequence and the …

Large Scale Simulations Of Nanoelectronic Devices With Nemo3-D On The Teragrid, Hansang Bae, Steve Clark, Gerhard Klimeck, Sunhee Lee, Maxim Naumov, Faisal Saied
Other Nanotechnology Publications
This paper describes recent progress in large scale numerical simulations for computational nano-electronics using the NEMO3-D package. NEMO3-D is a parallel analysis tool for nano-electronic devices such as quantum dots. The atomistic model used in NEMO3-D leads to large scale computations in two main phases: strain and electronic structure. This paper focuses primarily on the electronic structure phase of the computations. The eigenvalue problem associated with the Hamiltonian matrix is challenging for a number of reasons: (i) the need for very large scale, 100 million to one billion unknowns (ii) the desired eigenvalues (along with the associated eigenvectors) lie in …

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil
The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Anand Patil examines in his paper, "The Rebirth of Comparative Literature in Anglocalization," the debates on effects of "globalization" on literary studies and "cultures" in India. The focus of his comparative scrutiny follows the debate about the "death" of comparative literature. Patil re-imagines the rebirth of interdisciplinarity, a basic tenet of the discipline of comparative literature and a characteristic of globalization. He has coined the term "Anglocalization" to analyze the complexity of the effects of globalization in the multilingual and multicultural situation of the sub-continent. The term is used to describe a tripartite process: Anglicization by global English, economic liberation, …
