With the increasing emphasis on integrating engineering into K-12 classrooms to help meet the needs of our complex and multidisciplinary society, there is an urgent need to investigate teachers' engineering-focused professional development experiences as they relate to teacher learning, implementation, and student achievement. This study addresses this need by examining the effects of a professional development program focused on engineering integration, and how teachers chose to implement engineering in their classrooms as a result of the professional development. 198 teachers in grades 3–6 from 43 schools in 17 districts participated in a yearlong professional development program designed to help integrate …

Use of graph-structured data models is on the rise - in graph databases, in representing biological and healthcare data as well as geographical data. In order to secure graph-structured data, and develop cryptographically secure schemes for graph databases, it is essential to formally define and develop suitable collision resistant one-way hashing schemes and show them they are efficient. The widely used Merkle hash technique is not suitable as it is, because graphs may be directed acyclic ones or cyclic ones. In this paper, we are addressing this problem. Our contributions are: (1) define the practical and formal security model of …
Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó
Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, and Culture" Gábor Náray-Szabó argues that evolution is conservative in the sense that throughout the history of the universe old constructs like elementary particles, amino acids, and living cells remained conserved while the world evolved/evolves in complexity. A similar process can be observed in cultural evolution as components of society and culture continue to evolve. Considering the increasing pressure on natural resources by material consumption, a close alliance between past, present, and future generations is unavoidable and thus Náray-Szabó posits that concepts of conservative evolution and sustainability are related. However, in order to avoid …
Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia
Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry. The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by what the authors …

Conexiones: Fostering Socioscientific Inquiry In Graduate Teacher Preparation, Krista Glazewski, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Thomas Brush, Andrea Ellis
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Socioscientific Inquiry (SSI) represents one approach designed to target interest and knowledge in science. In this context, students consider scientific issues that have social implications and require a range of trade-offs, concepts, and considerations in order to arrive at informed conclusions (Sadler, 2004). However, inquiry tasks in general and SSI projects in particular are not widely adopted in K-12 settings, despite strong beliefs among teachers that these types of activities are valuable (Marshall, Horton, Igo, & Switzer, 2009). We suggest Collaborative Action Research may provide an important platform for enabling teachers to experience success through systematic investigations of their practice …

The Grand Challenge: Helping Teachers Learn/Teach Cutting-Edge Science Via A Pbl Approach, Peggy A. Ertmer, Sarah Schlosser, Kari Clase, Omolola Adedokun
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
A mixed-methods research study was designed to examine teachers’ knowledge and confidence for implementing a STEM-based problem-based learning (PBL) unit in their 6–12 grade science and math classrooms. Twenty-one teachers (7 in-service and 13 pre-service) participated in an intensive two-week summer workshop during which they engaged in, and then created, an immersive PBL unit related to sustainable energy. Data were collected through a pre-post content knowledge test and two pre-post surveys—one measuring knowledge and confidence for implementing PBL and one measuring science teaching efficacy. Daily reflections and focus group interviews provided additional data regarding teachers’ changing knowledge and confidence related …

Randomized And Efficient Authentication In Mobile Environments, Wei Jiang, Dan Lin, Feng Li, Elisa Bertino
Cyber Center Publications
In a mobile environment, a number of users act as a network nodes and communicate with one another to acquire location based information and services. This emerging paradigm has opened up new business opportunities and enables numerous applications such as road safety enhancement, service recommendations and mobile entertainment. A fundamental issue that impacts the success of these applications is the security and privacy concerns raised regarding the mobile users. In that, a malicious user or service provider can track the locations of a user traveled so that other malicious act can be carried out more effectively against the user. Therefore, …
Recovering A Forgotten Pioneer Of Science Studies: C. E. Ayres’ Deweyan Critique Of Science And Technology, David I. Waddington
Recovering A Forgotten Pioneer Of Science Studies: C. E. Ayres’ Deweyan Critique Of Science And Technology, David I. Waddington
Education and Culture
This paper brings to light the ideas of a pioneering but largely forgotten social critic, C. E. Ayres. In his first book, Science: The False Messiah (1927), which was written in consultation with John Dewey, Ayres advanced a forceful and original critique of science and technology. He argued that technological change was occurring at a pace that had overwhelmed existing social institutions, and further claimed that efforts to solve the problem by educating citizens about science and technology would prove fruitless. The analysis presented in this paper outlines Ayres’ key arguments, examines the mutual influences between Dewey and Ayres, and …

Radical Dewey: Deweyan Pedagogy In Mexico, 1915–1923, Victor J. Rodriguez
Education and Culture
From 1915 to 1923, the pedagogy of John Dewey became an important pillar of anarchist and socialist projects of education in Mexico. These radical experiments were based on the belief in an open-ended world amenable to the intervention of a new subject of modernity whose unconstrained operations created rather than disrupted social order. Ironically, these experiments paved the way for the appropriation of Dewey by an emerging national state that posited homogenization, the eradication of difference, and the displacement of Native and religious worlds as necessary to create a shared set of values necessary for the operations of this subject.
2012 Dewey Lecture: Making Meaning Together Beyond Theory And Practice, Jim Garrison
2012 Dewey Lecture: Making Meaning Together Beyond Theory And Practice, Jim Garrison
Education and Culture
Educators frequently fret over how to bridge the gap between theory and practice. In an important sense, it is a false problem. Theory is simply the thoughtful, reflective phase of good practice. We will approach Dewey’s philosophy as one of continuous creation and re-creation or even more precisely, social co-creation, that requires making meaning, knowledge, and value together. We will look at each one of these three in some detail along with the ways they transact with one another. Fundamentally, we can only distinguish them for some purposes, but never fully separate them. Everywhere we look, we will see we …

Background
Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR) of soybean, caused by Phytophthora sojae, is controlled byRps genes. However, little is known regarding the Rps-induced molecular responses to P. sojaeand how they actually overlap. We thus sequenced, analyzed, and compared the transcriptomes of 10 near isogenic lines (NILs), each with a unique Rps gene/allele, and the susceptible parent Williams, pre- and post-inoculation with the pathogen.
Results
A total of 4,330 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in Williams versus 2,014 to 5,499 DEGs in individual NILs upon inoculation with the pathogen. Comparisons of the DEGs between the …
Gas Turbine Engine Behavioral Modeling, Richard T. Meyer, Raymond A. Decarlo, Steve Pekarek, Chris Doktorcik
Gas Turbine Engine Behavioral Modeling, Richard T. Meyer, Raymond A. Decarlo, Steve Pekarek, Chris Doktorcik
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This paper develops and validates a power flow behavioral model of a gas tur- bine engine with a gas generator and free power turbine. “Simple” mathematical expressions to describe the engine’s power flow are derived from an understand- ing of basic thermodynamic and mechanical interactions taking place within the engine. The engine behavioral model presented is suitable for developing a supervisory level controller of an electrical power system that contains the en- gine connected to a generator and a large interconnection of many components, e.g., a naval ship power system powered by gas turbine engines. First principles engine models do …
A Method For Clustering High-Dimensional Data Using 1d Random Projections, Sangchun Han
A Method For Clustering High-Dimensional Data Using 1d Random Projections, Sangchun Han
Open Access Dissertations
Clustering high-dimensional data is more difficult than clustering low-dimensional data. The problem is twofold. First, there is an efficiency problem related to the data size, which increases with the dimensionality. Second, there is an effectiveness problem related to the fact that the mere existence of clusters in sample sets of high dimensions is questionable, as empirical samples hardly tend to cluster together in a meaningful fashion. The current approach to addressing this issue is to seek clusters in embedded subspaces of the original space. However, as dimensionality increases, a naive exhaustive search among all subspaces becomes exponentially more complex, which …

Qualitative, Tiered, Iclicker Recitation Introductions, David Blasing, Andrew Hirsch, Rebecca Lindell
IMPACT Symposium
Interactively engaging students can significantly help them understand key concepts [Hake 1998]. Additionally, students are most likely to recall the first five minutes of a presentation [Burns 1985]. Capitalizing on both of these, we altered the beginning of PHYS 272 (ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS) recitation to include a series of qualitative, “tiered,” iClicker questions that interactively engage students and socratically teach fundamental principals in electricity and magnetism.
The series begin with a question that most students comfortably and correctly answer. Successive questions increase in difficultly and the series stops with most students struggling to identify the correct answer. Along the …

Because privacy today is a major concern for mobile applications, network anonymizers are widely available on smartphones, such as Android. However despite the use of such anonymizers, in many cases applications are still able to identify the user and the device by different means than the IP address. The reason is that very often applications require device services and information that go beyond the capabilities of anonymous networks in protecting users’ identity and privacy. In this paper, we propose two solutions that address this problem. The first solution is based on an approach that shadows user and application data, device …
Lecture-Free Calculus For Science And Engineering, Benjamin Wiles
Lecture-Free Calculus For Science And Engineering, Benjamin Wiles
IMPACT Symposium
Plane Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (MA 16100) is a historically difficult, required course for engineering and science majors. The traditional configuration consists of 250 students meeting in a large lecture 3 times per week and twice per week in smaller recitations of size 40. Additionally, those who repeat the course often continue to encounter difficulty. A scalable re-design has been implemented to attempt to address the needs of students that are not being met in the traditional configuration by diverting resources from lecture to problem sessions and from traditional Q&A recitations to student-driven presentation/collaboration-based recitations. The students work in …

Identification Of Genomic Factors Using Family-Based Association Studies, Libo Wang
Identification Of Genomic Factors Using Family-Based Association Studies, Libo Wang
Open Access Dissertations
Genome-wide association studies become increasingly popular and important for detecting genetic associations of complex traits. However, it is well known that spurious associations could arise from statistical analysis without proper consideration of genetic relatedness of samples. Many methods have been proposed to guard against these spurious associations. Here we focus on multi-locus association studies of quantitative traits and the case-control status, and propose algorithms that take into consideration of genetic related samples to address possible confounding issues. As supervised dimension reduction methods, these algorithms performs well to conduct association studies with a large number of biomarkers but a relative small …

Seven item formats from a professional licensure examination program (n=4,706) were evaluated to determine whether there are significant differences in item parameter estimates based on item formats. The item formats were standard multiple choice, multiple choice with a graphic or exhibit attached, multiple choice where the examinee was asked to choose the best of four possible correct solutions, multiple choice where examinees were directed to choose the exception, calculations, ordered response and multiple response. Analysis showed similar item parameters for all multiple-choice type items, but better item fit and significantly longer response times for calculation items. Multiple response items were …
Scaling Issues And Solutions In Ultra Scaled Mosfets Using Predictive Modeling, Mehdi Salmani Jelodar
Scaling Issues And Solutions In Ultra Scaled Mosfets Using Predictive Modeling, Mehdi Salmani Jelodar
Open Access Dissertations
Channel length of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) are scaling below 20 nm. At this scale, quantum mechanical effects, including source to drain tunneling and quantum confinement play an increasingly important role in predicting device performance. Accurate projections of device characteristics are of high interest in the semiconductor industry. This work presents a semi-empirical model based quantum transport tool, which is used for accurately predicting the performance of double gate MOSFETs over the next 15 years as part of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). The results show ON-current and performance degradation as a result of source …
Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xin Qi
Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xin Qi
Open Access Dissertations
Uncertainties widely exist in physical, finance, and many other areas. Some uncertainties are determined by the nature of the research subject, such as random variable and stochastic process. However, in many problems uncertainty is a result of lack of knowledge and may not be modeled as random variables/processes because of the lack of probability information. This is often referred to as epistemic uncertainty, and the traditional probabilistic approaches cannot be readily employed. First two parts of this work study epistemic uncertainties in the forward problems. A method to compute upper and lower bounds for the quantity of interest of problems …
