Feasibility Analysis Of Large Length-Scale Thermocapillary Flow Experiment For The International Space Station, Samantha Jean Alberts Apr 2014

Feasibility Analysis Of Large Length-Scale Thermocapillary Flow Experiment For The International Space Station, Samantha Jean Alberts

Open Access Theses

The investigation of microgravity fluid dynamics emerged out of necessity with the advent of space exploration. In particular, capillary research took a leap forward in the 1960s with regards to liquid settling and interfacial dynamics. Due to inherent temperature variations in large spacecraft liquid systems, such as fuel tanks, forces develop on gas-liquid interfaces which induce thermocapillary flows. To date, thermocapillary flows have been studied in small, idealized research geometries usually under terrestrial conditions. The 1 to 3m lengths in current and future large tanks and hardware are designed based on hardware rather than research, which leaves spaceflight systems designers …

Feasibility Of Pulsed Proton Induced Acoustics For 3d Dosimetry, Fahed M. Alsanea Apr 2014

Feasibility Of Pulsed Proton Induced Acoustics For 3d Dosimetry, Fahed M. Alsanea

Open Access Theses

Proton therapy has the potential to deposit its energy in tissue with high conformity to the tumor and significantly reduced integral dose to normal tissue compared to conventional radiation, such as x-rays. As a result, local control can be enhanced while reducing side-effects and secondary cancers. This is due to the way charged Particles deposit their energy or dose, where protons form a Bragg peak and establish a well-defined distal edge as a function of depth (range). To date, the dose delivered to a patient from proton therapy remains uncertain, in particular the positioning of the distal edge of the …

An Exploratory Study Of Diversified Mentoring Relationships Among Graduate Students And Their Advisors In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Fields, Krystin R. Bodden

Open Access Theses

Minorities and women continue to be underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In graduate education, factors such as racism, prejudice, discrimination, sexism, stereotypes, tokenism, and a lack of role models can all plague students and contribute to uncompleted degrees and non-entrance into STEM fields. One of the tools being used to combat these barriers is effective mentoring. Graduate students and their advisors generally have close working relationships and advisors serve in a tremendously important role in the development of the graduate student, so an effective mentoring relationship is vital.

The purpose of this study was to explore …

Drift-Flux Correlation Development For Two-Phase Flow In Rod Bundles, Collin M. Clark Apr 2014

Drift-Flux Correlation Development For Two-Phase Flow In Rod Bundles, Collin M. Clark

Open Access Theses

A rod bundle drift-flux correlation is developed with intended application across a wide range of two-phase flow conditions. Special consideration is made for fluid flow mechanisms at low liquid velocity and low pressure conditions. In these instances, gravitational forces from the density difference of the associated fluid phases are more significant. Secondary flow patterns may develop as a result and a drift-flux correlation would need to make appropriate adjustments. Earlier correlations may have increased error at these conditions if they have been formulated with respect to relatively higher pressures or flow rates. In the present work, area-average void fraction data …

Cosmogenic Beryllium Cycling In A Natural Forest Setting, Grace Conyers Apr 2014

Cosmogenic Beryllium Cycling In A Natural Forest Setting, Grace Conyers

Open Access Theses

10 Bemet , or cosmogenic beryllium, has a long half-life of 1.4 million years and quick adsorption on soil particles, which may make it ideal for dating soil erosion in historical context. However, there are questions on about the fundamental assumptions of the retentivity of 10 Bemet . This manuscript explores these assumptions and the context of nutrient cycling in a natural forest setting.

To see if 10 Bemet was being cycled through the trees, and at what rate, we looked at the[10 Bemet ] in the soil, 4 species of trees, and their leaves. The isotopic ratio 10 Be/9 …

Eliciting And Characterizing Students’ Mental Models Within The Context Of Engineering Design, Chelsey Ann Dankenbring

Open Access Theses

Recently, science education reform documents have called for the incorporation of engineering principles and practices into the K-12 science standards and curriculum. One way this has been done is through the use of engineering design tasks as a way for students to apply their scientific understandings to real-world problems. However, minimal studies have documented students' conceptions within the context of engineering design. Thus, the first chapter of this thesis outlines the steps taken to develop a draw-and-explain item that elicited students' mental models regarding the cause of the four seasons after finishing an engineering design task. Students' mental models regarding …

Reactivity Studies Of Tridhydropyridine Radical Cautions By Using Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry And Advancement Of Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Asphaltenes And Degradation Products, Mohammad Sabir Aqueel

Open Access Dissertations

Aromatic organic molecules which have unpaired electrons play an important role in a variety of applications in the fields of organic synthesis, organic magnets, and biological activity of organic compounds. Several studies have been published on σ- type carbon-centered mono- and biradicals. Reactive intermediates with three formally unpaired electrons are known as triradicals. They can be defined as species with three electrons distributed in three degenerate or nearly degenerate orbitals, based on Salem's definition of biradicals from the electronic structure point of view. Very little is known about the reactivity of carbon-centered σ,σ,σ- triradicals due to the complexity of studying …

A Computer-Based Approach For Identifying Student Conceptual Change, Junchao Yan Apr 2014

A Computer-Based Approach For Identifying Student Conceptual Change, Junchao Yan

Open Access Theses

Misconceptions are commonly encountered in many areas of science and engineering where a to-be-learned concept conflicts with prior knowledge. Conceptual change is an approach for identifying and repairing the misconceptions. One of the ways to promote student conceptual change is providing students with ontological schema training. However, assessment of conceptual change relies on qualitative analysis of student responses. With the exponential growth of qualitative data in the form of graphical representations or written responses, the process of data analysis relying on human experts has become time-consuming and costly. This study took the advantages of natural language processing and machine learning …

Part I: Neoacadian To Alleghanian Foreland Basin Development And Provenance In The Central Appalachian Orogen, Pine Mountain Thrust Sheet Part Ii: Structural Configuration Of A Modified Mesozoic To Cenozoic Forearc Basin System, South-Central Alaska, Peter Benjamin Robertson

Open Access Theses

Foreland and forearc basins are large sediment repositories that form in response to tectonic loading and lithospheric flexure during orogenesis along convergent plate boundaries. In addition to their numerous valuable natural resources, these systems preserve important geologic information regarding the timing and intensity of deformation, uplift and erosion history, and subsidence history along collisional margins, and, in ancient systems, may provide more macroscopic information regarding climate, plate motion, and eustatic sea level fluctuations. This thesis presents two studies focused in the Paleozoic Appalachian foreland basin system along the eastern United States and in the Mesozoic to Cenozoic Matanuska forearc basin …

Estimating Age-Dependent Per-Encounter Chlamydia Trachomatis Acquisition Risk Via A Markov-Based State-Transition Model., Yu Teng, Nan Kong, Wanzhu Tu Apr 2014

Estimating Age-Dependent Per-Encounter Chlamydia Trachomatis Acquisition Risk Via A Markov-Based State-Transition Model., Yu Teng, Nan Kong, Wanzhu Tu

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

Chlamydial infection is a common bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide, caused byC. trachomatis. The screening for C. trachomatis has been proven to be successful. However, such success is not fully realized through tailoring the recommended screening strategies for different age groups. This is partly due to the knowledge gap in understanding how the infection is correlated with age. In this paper, we estimate age-dependent risks of acquiring C. trachomatisby adolescent women via unprotected heterosexual acts.

Methods

We develop a time-varying Markov state-transition model and compute the incidences of chlamydial infection at discrete age points by simulating …

Just Noticeable Difference Survey Of Computer Generated Imagery Using Normal Maps, Michael Edward Hoerter Apr 2014

Just Noticeable Difference Survey Of Computer Generated Imagery Using Normal Maps, Michael Edward Hoerter

Open Access Theses

Normal maps are widely used as a resource-efficient means of simulating detailed topology on 3D surfaces in the gaming, simulation, and film industries. However, as surface mesh density increases, it is unknown at what level of density these increases become no longer perceivable, and whether normal maps significantly affect this threshold. This study examined at what point participants were unable to discern differences between one level of mesh density and another using an adapted staircase model. Participants identified this threshold for five different organic character models. The averages of each of these thresholds were taken and compared against the results …

Theoretical Foundations For Studying The Cube Of Love: Chiara Lubich’S Spirituality Of Communion, Abraham Joshua Heschel’S “Transitive” Perspective Of Human Nature, And Robert Selman’S Theory Of Social Awareness, Ronald Ramer, Steven Rogg, Thomas Masters

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The authors note how the Cube of Love facilitates the living out of trinitarian relationships inherent in a spirituality of communion. Drawing upon Abraham Heschel’s writings regarding the “transitive” nature of human experience and on Robert Selman’s exploration of stages of growth in social awareness, they suggest that the Cube’s effectiveness may lie in its coherence with authentic human relationships and with the insights of developmental psychology. The authors propose these insights as avenues for research into how the Cube of Love might help to transcend the cultural categories that limit studies of social development, which in turn may offer …

The “Book Of Nature”: Connecting Science And Wisdom, Sergio Rondinara Mar 2014

The “Book Of Nature”: Connecting Science And Wisdom, Sergio Rondinara

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Rondinara explores the reality of nature, both in its totality and in its essence, from different perspectives. In so doing, he discusses how Chiara Lubich envisions nature in relation to God and humankind. First, he examines the God-nature relation as Chiara understood it, as both immanent and transcendent. Then, he turns to Chiara’s notion of nature as an ongoing “event” in history leading to the recapitulation of all things in God. Chiara sees this theo-logical interpretation of nature as being not in conflict with other interpretations from philosophy and science but in dialogue with them. Rondinara concludes with today’s environmental …

Comparing Technology-Supported Teacher Education Curricular Models For Enhancing Statistical Content Knowledge, Dionne Cross Francis, Rick Hudson, Crystal Vesperman, Arnulfo Perez

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Recent calls have been made to enhance and extend the statistical experiences of K-12 students. However, to ensure that such goals are met, teachers also need to develop deep conceptual understanding and pedagogical content knowledge that are essential to statistical thinking and reasoning. In this regard, over the past two decades, leading thinkers and professional organizations had advocated that teaching and curricula should be focused and organized around problem solving. In this paper we describe three such technology-supported curricula—a project-based learning (PjBL) unit, problem-solving activities (PS) unit, and a model-eliciting activities (MEA) unit—that align with this perspective and discuss the …

Laser Sintering Of Separated And Uniformly Distributed Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes Integrated Iron Nanocomposites, Dong Lin, Chunghorng Richard Liu, Gary J. Cheng Mar 2014

Laser Sintering Of Separated And Uniformly Distributed Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes Integrated Iron Nanocomposites, Dong Lin, Chunghorng Richard Liu, Gary J. Cheng

Birck and NCN Publications

Uniform distribution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in metal matrix during additive manufacturing of nanocomposites is always a challenge since the CNTs tend to aggregate in the molten pool. In this study, Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were separated and distributed uniformly into iron matrix by laser sintering process. MWNTs and iron powders were mixed together by magnetic stir, coated on steel 4140 surface, followed by laser sintering. Due to the fast heating and cooling rate, the CNTs are evenly distributed in the metal matrix. The temperature field was calculated by multiphysics simulation considering size effects, including size dependent melting temperature, thermal …

Background

Molecularly-guided trials (i.e. PMed) now seek to aid clinical decision-making by matching cancer targets with therapeutic options. Progress has been hampered by the lack of cancer models that account for individual-to-individual heterogeneity within and across cancer types. Naturally occurring cancers in pet animals are heterogeneous and thus provide an opportunity to answer questions about these PMed strategies and optimize translation to human patients. In order to realize this opportunity, it is now necessary to demonstrate the feasibility of conducting molecularly-guided analysis of tumors from dogs with naturally occurring cancer in a clinically relevant setting.

Methodology

A proof-of-concept study was …

Engaging Non-Scientists In Stem Through Problem-Based Learning And Service Learning, Andrew Tawfik, Rebecca J. Trueman, Matthew M. Lorz

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study follows the evolution of a single biology course designed for non-science majors. In its original design, the course used only traditional pedagogical techniques, such as lecture and textbook homework assignments. Over several iterations of the course, the class combined problem-based learning (PBL) and service learning to better support student knowledge. For this study, our goal was for students to learn biology concepts as they engaged in a lake cleanup project within the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Data sources consisted of pretest, posttest, and final exam scores to assess learning. The results suggest the combination of PBL and service …

Taking A Leap Of Faith: Redefining Teaching And Learning In Higher Education Through Project-Based Learning, Jean S. Lee, Sue Blackwell, Jennifer Drake, Kathryn A. Moran Mar 2014

Taking A Leap Of Faith: Redefining Teaching And Learning In Higher Education Through Project-Based Learning, Jean S. Lee, Sue Blackwell, Jennifer Drake, Kathryn A. Moran

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study examines two aspects of teaching with a project-based learning (PBL) model in higher education settings: faculty definitions of PBL and faculty PBL practices, as evidenced by their self-described successes and challenges in implementation. Faculty participants took “a leap of faith” in their teaching practices to redefine what it means to teach and learn using PBL as an instructional methodology. The findings provide insight into how faculty conceptualization of PBL drives implementation; how the PBL approach challenges college-level teachers; and how instructors’ perceptions of their own role in the PBL process impacts how they implement PBL.

Model-Based Analysis For Qualitative Data: An Application In Drosophila Germline Stem Cell Regulation., Michael S. Pargett, Ann E. Rundell, Gregery T. Buzzard, David Michael Umulis

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Discovery in developmental biology is often driven by intuition that relies on the integration of multiple types of data such as fluorescent images, phenotypes, and the outcomes of biochemical assays. Mathematical modeling helps elucidate the biological mechanisms at play as the networks become increasingly large and complex. However, the available data is frequently under-utilized due to incompatibility with quantitative model tuning techniques. This is the case for stem cell regulation mechanisms explored in the Drosophila germarium through fluorescent immunohistochemistry. To enable better integration of biological data with modeling in this and similar situations, we have developed a general parameter estimation …
