Solving Real World Problems With Alternate Reality Gaming: Student Experiences In The Global Village Playground Capstone Course Design, Mary J. Dondlinger, Julie K. Mcleod

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The Global Village Playground (GVP) was a capstone learning experience designed to address institutional assessment needs while providing an integrated and authentic learning experience for students aimed at fostering complex problem solving, as well as critical and creative thinking. In the GVP, students work on simulated and real-world problems as a design team tasked with developing an alternate reality game that makes an impact on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Researchers employed a qualitative case study approach to evaluate what aspects of this problem-based, hybrid, course design students found most and least beneficial to their learning. Findings suggest strategies …

On The Interaction Of Sublimating Gas With Cometary Bodies, Jordan Kenneth Steckloff Jan 2015

On The Interaction Of Sublimating Gas With Cometary Bodies, Jordan Kenneth Steckloff

Open Access Dissertations

Sublimation of volatiles is a defining process of comet nuclei, and profoundly affects their dynamics, structure, and appearance. Central to understanding the processes by which comets formed and subsequently evolved is a careful computation of this sublimation pressure as a function of heliocentric distance. Unlike previous efforts, I develop a thermodynamic method to numerically compute the sublimation pressure of any species from limited knowledge of its physical properties. I then describe a novel cometary disruption mechanism in which this sublimation pressure induces differential stresses within the body of the nucleus that exceed its material strength, resulting in structural failure and …

Arabidopsis Myosin Is Involved In The Distribution And Dynamic Behavior Of The Cellulose Synthase Complex, Chao Cai Jan 2015

Arabidopsis Myosin Is Involved In The Distribution And Dynamic Behavior Of The Cellulose Synthase Complex, Chao Cai

Open Access Theses

Plant cells are encased in cell walls which are important for the growth and development of the organism. Primary cell wall consists mainly of polysaccharides with cellulose as the most abundant component. In plant cells, cellulose is synthesized by a plasma membrane (PM) localized protein complex called the cellulose synthase complex (CSC). It was previously reported that disrupting normal actin organization resulted in a reduction of cellulose content in Arabidopsis dark-grown seedlings. Furthermore, actin was found to facilitate the delivery of CSC into the PM, and inferred to be involved in endocytosis. As a motor protein that translocates cargo along …

The Integration Of Heat Resources In A Solar Thermal-Heat Pump Hydronic System, John Maxfield Degrove Jan 2015

The Integration Of Heat Resources In A Solar Thermal-Heat Pump Hydronic System, John Maxfield Degrove

Open Access Theses

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, roughly 41% of the energy consumed in the U.S. is used the power buildings. Within that number, almost half is used to heat or cool the building. Current technologies allow for consistent thermal management, but most utilize energy harvested from fossil fuels or convert electricity back into thermal energy. Background literature shows that the utilization of alternative heat resources such as heat pumps and solar thermal collectors can greatly reduce the energy used for heat delivery while producing adequate heating performance. A combined hydronic system using a bank of solar thermal collectors in …

Modeling, Analysis, And Control Of Syk-Mediated Signaling Events For B Cells And Associated Cellular Response For B Cells, Reginald Mcgee Jan 2015

Modeling, Analysis, And Control Of Syk-Mediated Signaling Events For B Cells And Associated Cellular Response For B Cells, Reginald Mcgee

Open Access Dissertations

Understanding the immune system and its responses to foreign threats (antigens) is a matter of understanding the immune cells involved, their individual responses, and chemicals responsible for intracellular and intercellular communication. The overall immune response is driven by individual actions of neutrophils, antigen-presenting cells, and lymphocytes (T cells and B cells), among other cells. Intercellular communication is the means by which immune cells develop coordinated response while intracellular signals determine responses within a cell; both depend on systems of chemical reactions at their respective scales. The perspective taken in this dissertation is that of understanding B cells at the intracellular …

Shelf-Life Improvement Of Distillers Wet Grains With Solubles, Janie Denise Mcclurkin-Moore Jan 2015

Shelf-Life Improvement Of Distillers Wet Grains With Solubles, Janie Denise Mcclurkin-Moore

Open Access Dissertations

Distillers wet grains with solubles (DWGS) is a co-product of the ethanol production using the dry-grind process. DWG is widely used as a feed and supplemental protein source in North American cattle rations. However due to its short shelf-life, 3-4 days in the summer and 7-10 days in the winter, its use is limited to cattle feeding facilities within close proximity to an ethanol production plant. It is known that the shelf-life of DWGS in the summer diminishes drastically compared to DWGS in the winter. This effect is primarily due to temperature, which drives mold growth in high moisture feedstocks. …

Accelerating Mpi Collective Communications Through Hierarchical Algorithms With Flexible Inter-Node Communication And Imbalance Awareness, Benjamin Scott Parsons Jan 2015

Accelerating Mpi Collective Communications Through Hierarchical Algorithms With Flexible Inter-Node Communication And Imbalance Awareness, Benjamin Scott Parsons

Open Access Dissertations

This work presents and evaluates algorithms for MPI collective communication operations on high performance systems. Collective communication algorithms are extensively investigated, and a universal algorithm to improve the performance of MPI collective operations on hierarchical clusters is introduced. This algorithm exploits shared-memory buffers for efficient intra-node communication while still allowing the use of unmodified, hierarchy-unaware traditional collectives for inter-node communication. The universal algorithm shows impressive performance results with a variety of collectives, improving upon the MPICH algorithms as well as the Cray MPT algorithms. Speedups average 15x - 30x for most collectives with improved scalability up to 65536 cores.^ Further …

A Phenomenographic Analysis Of First-Year Engineering Students' Experiences With Problems Involving Multiple Possible Solutions, Emily Dringenberg

Open Access Dissertations

Engineers are expected to solve problems that are ill-structured. These problems are presented with a lack of necessary information and allow for different ways of engaging with the problem; they are open-ended and involve multiple possible solutions with multiple means of evaluation. In order to allow maximum time for students to develop skills for solving such problems, undergraduate engineering programs can introduce such problems during the first year of students’ education, in the form of cornerstone design tasks. This provides students with more opportunities to develop their ability to engage with ill-structured problems, which are characteristic of engineering work. Researchers …

Malliavin Calculus In The Canonical Levy Process: White Noise Theory And Financial Applications., Rolando Dangnanan Navarro Jan 2015

Malliavin Calculus In The Canonical Levy Process: White Noise Theory And Financial Applications., Rolando Dangnanan Navarro

Open Access Dissertations

We constructed a white noise theory for the Canonical Levy process by Sole, Utzet, and Vives. The construction is based on the alternative construction of the chaos expansion of square integrable random variable. Then, we showed a Clark-Ocone theorem in L^2(P) and under the change of measure. The result from the Clark-Ocone theorem was used for the mean-variance hedging problem and applied it to stochastic volatility models such as the Barndorff-Nielsen and Shepard model model and the Bates model. A Donsker Delta approach is employed on a Binary option to solve the mean-variance hedging problem. Finally, we are able to …

Development And Application Of Pseudoreceptor Modeling, Gregory Lee Wilson Jan 2015

Development And Application Of Pseudoreceptor Modeling, Gregory Lee Wilson

Open Access Dissertations

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) methods are a commonly used tool in the drug discovery process. These methods attempt to form a statistical model that relates descriptor properties of a ligand to the activity of that ligand compound towards a specific desired physiological response. QSAR methods are known as a ligand-based method, as they specifically use information from ligands and not protein structural data. However, a derivation of QSAR methods are pseudoreceptor methods. Pseudoreceptor methods go beyond standard QSAR by building a model representation of the protein pocket. However, the ability of pseudoreceptors to accurately replicate natural protein surfaces has not …

This dissertation project highlights some positive news about college students who have chosen to become teachers, also known as preservice teachers. Two studies were conducted: one that examined the students’ open-ended answers to the direct question of why they want to become teachers; the other that examined the preservice teachers’ motivations overall, in the context of becoming a teacher, and in the situation of their education coursework. The findings in both studies suggest that students are choosing teaching for positive reasons including for the social utility value of the profession and their intrinsic interest in teaching. In addition, when examining …

Co2 Heat Pumps For Commercial Building Applications With Simultaneous Heating And Cooling Demand, Supriya Dharkar Jan 2015

Co2 Heat Pumps For Commercial Building Applications With Simultaneous Heating And Cooling Demand, Supriya Dharkar

Open Access Theses

Many commercial buildings, including data centers, hotels and hospitals, have a simultaneous heating and cooling demand depending on the season, occupation and auxiliary equipment. A data center on the Purdue University, West Lafayette campus is used as a case study. The electrical equipment in data centers produce heat, which must be removed to prevent the equipment temperature from rising to a certain level. With proper integration, this heat has the potential to be used as a cost-effective energy source for heating the building in which the data center resides or the near-by buildings. The proposed heat pump system utilizes carbon …

Towards The Real-Time Application Of Indirect Methods For Hypersonic Missions, Michael Sparapany Jan 2015

Towards The Real-Time Application Of Indirect Methods For Hypersonic Missions, Michael Sparapany

Open Access Theses

Conceptual hypersonic mission design has typically been performed in a computationally intensive, iterative manner using direct optimization methods. The introduction of modern computing has resulted in the widespread adoption of direct methods, and useful information associated with optimal solutions has been lost. Optimization through indirect methods leverages this information, yielding high quality trajectories while reducing the dimensionality of the overall problem.

Incorporation Of Mission Design Constraints In Floquet Mode And Hamiltonian Structure-Preserving Orbital Maintenance Control Strategies For Libration Point Orbits, Kiarash Tajdaran Jan 2015

Incorporation Of Mission Design Constraints In Floquet Mode And Hamiltonian Structure-Preserving Orbital Maintenance Control Strategies For Libration Point Orbits, Kiarash Tajdaran

Open Access Theses

Libration point orbits are, in general, inherently unstable. Without the presence of corrective maneuvers a spacecraft will diverge from the vicinity of such trajectories. In this research effort, two orbital maintenance control strategies are studied: the impulsive Floquet Mode (FM) controller and the continuous Hamiltonian Structure-Preserving (HSP) controller. These two controllers are further developed to incorporate real-world mission design constraints. The FM controller is modified to accommodate feasible maneuver directions that are constrained to a plane or a line. This controller is shown to be applicable for orbital station-keeping of spin stabilized spacecraft that are only equipped with either tangential …

Reduced Order Modeling And Analysis Of Combustion Instabilities, Gowtham Manikanta Reddy Tamanampudi Jan 2015

Reduced Order Modeling And Analysis Of Combustion Instabilities, Gowtham Manikanta Reddy Tamanampudi

Open Access Theses

The coupling between unsteady heat release and pressure fluctuations in a combustor leads to the complex phenomenon of combustion instability. Combustion instability can lead to enormous pressure fluctuations and high rates of combustor heat transfer which play a very important role in determining the life and performance of engine. Although high fidelity simulations are starting to yield detailed understanding of the underlying physics of combustion instability, the enormous computing power required restricts their application to a few runs and fairly simple geometries. To overcome this, low order models are being employed for prediction and analysis. Since low order models cannot …

Advanced Modeling And Efficient Optimization Methods For Real-Time Response In Water Networks, Arpan Seth Jan 2015

Advanced Modeling And Efficient Optimization Methods For Real-Time Response In Water Networks, Arpan Seth

Open Access Dissertations

In response to a contamination incident in water distribution networks, effective mitigation procedures must be planned. Disinfectant booster stations can be used to neutralize a variety of contaminant and protect the public. In this thesis, two methods are proposed for the optimal placement of booster stations. Since the contaminant species is unknown a priori, these two methods differ in how they model the unknown reaction between the contaminant and the disinfectant. Both methods employ Mixed-Integer Linear Programming to minimize the expected impact over a large set of potential contamination scenarios that consider the uncertainty in the location and time of …

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero Jan 2015

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero

Open Access Dissertations

The conceptualization of the term "system" has become highly dependent on the application domain. What a physicist means by the term system might be different than what a sociologist means by the same term. In 1956, Bertalanffy [1] defined a system as " a set of units with relationships among them". This and many other definitions of system share the idea of a system as a black box that has parts or elements interacting between each other. This means that at some level of abstraction all systems are similar, what eventually differentiates one system from another is the set of …

Histone modifications such as methylation and acetylation play a significant role in controlling gene expression in unstressed and stressed plants. Genome-wide analysis of such stress-responsive modifications and genes in non-model crops is limited. We report the genome-wide profiling of histone methylation (H3K9me2) and acetylation (H4K12ac) in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under rust (Uromyces appendiculatus) stress using two high-throughput approaches, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). ChIP-Seq analysis revealed 1,235 and 556 histone methylation and acetylation responsive genes from common bean leaves treated with the rust pathogen at 0, 12 and 84 hour-after-inoculation (hai), while …
