Road Weather Severity Based On Environmental Energy, Michael E. Baldwin, Derrick Snyder, Chase Miller, Kimberly Hoogewind Nov 2015

Road Weather Severity Based On Environmental Energy, Michael E. Baldwin, Derrick Snyder, Chase Miller, Kimberly Hoogewind

JTRP Technical Reports

Effective and efficient removal of snow and ice from public roadways is a key outcome for winter road maintenance operations. This outcome depends on the severity of the wintry weather as well as the quality and quantity of resources used to treat the roadways. Wintry weather conditions vary substantially from hour-to-hour, storm-to-storm, and season-to-season. Many different transportation departments have used empirical statistical models and machine learning methods based upon weather parameters to develop indices to estimate the severity of winter weather. Many of these previous studies used summary statistics, such as the number of days with certain events (snowfall, freezing …

Transforming Institutions: Undergraduate Stem Education For The 21st Century, Gabriela C. Weaver, Wilella D. Burgess, Amy L. Childress, Linda Slakey

Purdue University Press Books

Higher education is coming under increasing scrutiny, both publically and within academia, with respect to its ability to appropriately prepare students for the careers that will make them competitive in the 21st-century workplace. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that many global issues will require creative and critical thinking deeply rooted in the technical STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. However, the existing and ingrained structures of higher education, particularly in the STEM fields, are not set up to provide students with extensive skill development in communication, teamwork, and divergent thinking, which is needed …

Pbl In The Era Of Reform Standards: Challenges And Benefits Perceived By Teachers In One Elementary School, Nahid Nariman, Janet Chrispeels Oct 2015

Pbl In The Era Of Reform Standards: Challenges And Benefits Perceived By Teachers In One Elementary School, Nahid Nariman, Janet Chrispeels

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

We explore teachers’ efforts to implement problem-based learning (PBL) in an elementary school serving predominantly English learners. Teachers had an opportunity to implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) using PBL in a summer school setting with no test-pressures. To understand the challenges and benefits of PBL implementation, a case study method was used and a variety of data collected. Results suggest collaboration amongst teachers is essential to design and implement PBL units. A challenge was the tension between the contradictory accountability and curriculum coverage goals of the regular academic year versus letting go to promote inquiry. Both teachers and …

Stress Granules Modulate Syk To Cause Microglial Cell Dysfunction In Alzheimer's Disease, Soumira Ghosh, Robert Geahlen Oct 2015

Stress Granules Modulate Syk To Cause Microglial Cell Dysfunction In Alzheimer's Disease, Soumira Ghosh, Robert Geahlen

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Microglial cells in the brains of Alzheimer's patients are known to be recruited to amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques where they exhibit an activated phenotype, but are defective for plaque removal by phagocytosis. In this study, we show that microglia stressed by exposure to sodium arsenite or Aβ(1–42) peptides or fibrils form ex- tensive stress granules (SGs) to which the tyrosine kinase, SYK, is recruited. SYK enhances the formation of SGs, is active within the resulting SGs and stimulates the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are toxic to neuronal cells. This sequestration of SYK inhibits the ability of microglial …

Heat Transfer Mechanisms In Porous Materials And Contemporary Problems In Thermophysical Properties Investigations: Analyses And Solutions, E. Litovsky, V. Issoupov, J. Kleiman

International Thermal Conductivity Conference (ITCC) and the International Thermal Expansion Symposium (ITES)

This article is an overview of the topical problems in the investigation of thermophysical properties and the development of a database for porous materials. Determination of both apparent/measured and true thermophysical properties is discussed taking into account combined heat and mass transfer, latent heat effects during chemical and physical transformations, as well as structural changes. The approaches to the solution of these problems are demonstrated for a number of different classes of materials:

  1. Industrial refractories, ceramics, highly porous insulation;
  2. Moist materials and materials undergoing phase, chemical and structural transformations;
  3. Materials semitransparent for heat radiation.

The approaches being used in the …

On The Development Of The Hot Strip, Hot Disc, And Pulse Hot Strip Methods For Measuring Thermal Transport Properties, Silas E. Gustafsson

International Thermal Conductivity Conference (ITCC) and the International Thermal Expansion Symposium (ITES)

This review is focused on the development of experimental methods for measuring thermal transport properties. Special emphasis is given to plane probes, which are used both as heat sources and as temperature recording devices. With such probes it is under certain conditions possible to determine both the thermal conductivity and the thermal diffusivity from a single transient recording. The conditions which must be fulfilled in an experiment are introduced by the use of the concept of a thermal probing depth, and from which the time window of observations can be defined. The ultimate goal of the dual determination of the …

Thermal Conductivity Of Simulated Soils By The Needle Probe Method For Energy Foundation Applications, J. E. Low, F. A. Loveridge, W. Powrie Oct 2015

Thermal Conductivity Of Simulated Soils By The Needle Probe Method For Energy Foundation Applications, J. E. Low, F. A. Loveridge, W. Powrie

International Thermal Conductivity Conference (ITCC) and the International Thermal Expansion Symposium (ITES)

Soil thermal conductivity is an important parameter in the design of ground source heat pump and energy foundation systems. A laboratory method for measuring the soil thermal conductivity is the needle probe method. Earlier, analysis of the needle probe test data has been simplistic, relying heavily on human judgment and rules of thumb. This article presents an alternative method of analyzing the needle probe data with the aid of MATLAB, which is a technical programming language and computing environment. Four agar–kaolin specimens of varying densities were prepared to resemble simple soils. These were tested using the needle probe for a …

A Consensus On The Definition And Knowledge Base For Computer Graphics, Michael Alden Roller Oct 2015

A Consensus On The Definition And Knowledge Base For Computer Graphics, Michael Alden Roller

Open Access Dissertations

Despite several decades of historical innovation, measurable impacts, and multiple specializations the existing knowledge base for Computer Graphics (CG) lacks consensus, and numerous definitions for it have been published based on distinct contexts. Disagreement among post-secondary academics has divided CG programs into three contextual areas that emphasize different topics. This division has resulted in the decontextualization of CG education, and CG programs now face several challenges in meeting the needs of industry. Employing the Delphi Method, this investigation explored the perceptions among post-secondary educators and industry professionals about the definition of CG and how it is identified in terms of …

Realizing Potential: Innovation Beyond The Cliché, Howard Burton, Christine Fischer Sep 2015

Realizing Potential: Innovation Beyond The Cliché, Howard Burton, Christine Fischer

Charleston Library Conference

How well have we been doing at exploiting the fruits of modern technology to develop truly innovative and impactful educational products for the university student and educator? How might we do better still? In this joint paper, Burton (creator of Ideas Roadshow) argues that a vital first step towards a more promising future lies in adopting a “first principles” methodology: identifying the specific pedagogical challenge before subsequently investigating how technology might productively address it, rather than unreflectively applying technological advances to existing frameworks. Meanwhile, Fischer, Head of Acquisitions at UNCG, responds to these claims by providing an independent librarian's perspective.

Engrossed, Enraged, Engaged: Empowering Faculty In Transforming Scholarly Communication, Jen Waller, Jennifer W. Bazeley Sep 2015

Engrossed, Enraged, Engaged: Empowering Faculty In Transforming Scholarly Communication, Jen Waller, Jennifer W. Bazeley

Charleston Library Conference

Librarians are deeply invested in the scholarly publishing lifecycle. This investment, in tandem with an evolving scholarly communication system, has encouraged librarians to become advocates for transformation in this landscape. At the same time, some faculty members have been slower to understand the complexities of the current system and its evolution. At Miami University, traditional communication methods weren’t sufficient to meaningfully engage faculty in these evolving trends. As a response, several librarians designed and cofacilitated two Scholarly Communication Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) for two academic years. These FLCs have been the most successful method of increasing faculty understanding about scholarly …

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope Sep 2015

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope

Charleston Library Conference

When the faculty of the College of Staten Island, CUNY (CSI) introduced a new baccalaureate level program in East Asian Studies the library faced the challenge of evaluating the adequacy of its holdings to support the program and its future development. Multidisciplinary fields of study (e.g., East Asian Studies) that pertain to a specific geographical or cultural area present a unique set of evaluative issues because their subject content cannot be confined to set classification ranges, rendering the traditional methods of collection analysis inadequate. This poster will present the results of an evaluation of CSI’s East Asian Studies collection, discuss …

Academic libraries have been at pivotal crossroads for some years as deans and their staffers realize the perplexing shortage of shelf space for print volumes while at the same time determining the optimum balance of physical resources on shelves in light of the exploding world of online digital information. The question of what is the best format for the library users’ research, teaching, and scholarship continues to be analyzed, assessed, and discussed. As a result, new and innovative library business models are evolving that consider dramatically "revisioning" floors of library space to accommodate the ever‐changing needs of library users while …

Wilde About Weeding: An Earnest Effort In Collection Development, Melissa Johnson Sep 2015

Wilde About Weeding: An Earnest Effort In Collection Development, Melissa Johnson

Charleston Library Conference

In an effort to create more student space, provide ease of access to resources, and strengthen their collection, a medium sized academic library at a recently consolidated university undertook a major weeding project in 2014. A weeding plan was developed for both the monographs and the serials. Since it was important to get immediate results in removing items from the collection, the print serials section was the first area selected for weeding. Through a step‐by‐step process that involved all members of the library staff, items were evaluated on electronic availability, availability at the other university libraries, the content, the condition, …

Are E-Book Big Deal Bundles Still Valuable?, Aaron K. Shrimplin, Jennifer W. Bazeley Sep 2015

Are E-Book Big Deal Bundles Still Valuable?, Aaron K. Shrimplin, Jennifer W. Bazeley

Charleston Library Conference

The academic e‐book market has undergone significant change in the last five years. E‐book availability has greatly increased as library demand has grown, with an increasing percentage of library acquisitions preferring electronic rather than print format. E‐book acquisition models like patron‐driven acquisition and short‐term loan have now become commonplace and available from a multitude of consortia, publishers, and aggregators. With the wide availability of these models, is there still value in buying e‐books through package deals?

To help answer this question, we will present the results of a usage‐based analysis of Wiley e‐books. Since 2012, Miami University Libraries have purchased …

(Re)Counting Meaningful Learning Experiences: Using Student-Created Reflective Videos To Make Invisible Learning Visible During Pjbl Experiences, Shaunna Smith Sep 2015

(Re)Counting Meaningful Learning Experiences: Using Student-Created Reflective Videos To Make Invisible Learning Visible During Pjbl Experiences, Shaunna Smith

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This ethnographic case study investigated how the process of learning during a yearlong after-school, project-based learning (PjBL) experience could be documented by student-created reflective videos. Guided by social constructivism, constant comparative analysis was used to explore the meaningful learning that took place in addition to the planned curricula, resulting in an exploration of the intersections of life lessons that include (a) “making learning more real,” (b) being “on a mission to change the world,” and (c) “you can’t control anybody but yourself.” Findings from the study indicate that student-created reflective videos can document meaningful learning that is capable of “counting” …

Stabilizing Switched Linear Systems Under Adversarial Switching, Jianghai Hu, Dong-Hwan Lee, Jinglai Shen Sep 2015

Stabilizing Switched Linear Systems Under Adversarial Switching, Jianghai Hu, Dong-Hwan Lee, Jinglai Shen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem of stabilizing discrete-time switched linear control systems using continuous input by the user and against adversarial switching by an adversary is studied. It is assumed that the adversary has the advantage in that at each time it knows the user's decision on the continuous control input but not vice versa. Stabilizability conditions and bounds on the fastest stabilizing rates are derived. Examples are given to illustrate the results.

Performance Measure That Indicates Geometry Sufficiency Of State Highways: Volume Ii—Clear Zones And Cross-Section Information Extraction, Jie Shan, Serkan Ural

JTRP Technical Reports

Evaluation method employed for the proposed corridor projects by Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) consider road geometry improvements by a generalized categorization. A new method which considers the change in geometry improvements requires additional information regarding cross section elements. Part of this information is readily available but some information like the embankment slopes and obstructions near traveled way needs to be acquired. This study investigates available data sources and methods to obtain cross-section and clear zone information in a feasible way for this purpose. We have employed color infrared (CIR) orthophotos, LiDAR point clouds, digital elevation and surface models for …

Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs As Reflected In Appelfeld's The Story Of A Life, Dana Mihăilescu Sep 2015

Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs As Reflected In Appelfeld's The Story Of A Life, Dana Mihăilescu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs as Reflected in Appelfeld's The Story of a Life" Dana Mihăilescu identifies characteristics of child survivors' memoirs in Aharon Appelfeld's writing. Mihăilescu addresses the following main question: is the structure of child survivors' memoirs similar to that of Holocaust memoirs written by adult survivors or is there a tendency to focus on certain aspects given the young age some had at the time? Mihăilescu argues that unlike regular autobiographies by Holocaust adult survivors, child survivors' memoirs are less constructed around factual events of private and public relevance and that they concentrate instead …

Give The Students Science: Creation And Implementation Of A Fourth Grade Stem Unit, Jeffrey D. Radloff Aug 2015

Give The Students Science: Creation And Implementation Of A Fourth Grade Stem Unit, Jeffrey D. Radloff

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In America, students often are not taught science curricula until sixth grade or later, giving them roughly six years to become scientifically literate. Science has historically been taught separately from other interconnected disciplines, including technology, engineering, and math. As a result, the number of students entering science careers remains low. In response, educators have recently implemented STEM integration—a pedagogy geared toward combining major tenets of these disciplines. Theoretically, connecting STEM integration with scientific literacy should encourage student interest and improve preparedness to enter into STEM careers. As part of an EDCI605 Teaching Science class, the instructor and Purdue students created …
