Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham Mar 2025

Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Voices of scholars are raised and amplified through the academic currency of citations. However, not all voices are heard and shared equally. Citation justice is an increasingly recognized issue within academic circles, focusing on the under-citation of women and people of color. This systemic bias, evident across many disciplines, impacts career progression, grant acquisition, and ultimately diversity among decision-makers. Citation practices are pivotal in shaping academic discourse, research, and education. Despite the significant influence of these practices, there is currently no comprehensive method to assess citation biases based on the demographics of authors. Efforts to measure diversity through computational analysis …

School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Object transfer through throwing is a classic dynamic manipulation task that necessitates precise control and perception capabilities. However, developing dynamic models for unstructured environments using analytical methods presents challenges. In this study, we present DartBot, a robot that integrates tactile exploration and reinforcement learning to achieve robust throwing skills for nonrigid relatively small objects under the influence of moment of inertia which cause the object to spin in the air. Unlike traditional sim-to-real transfer methods, our approach involves direct training of the agent on a real hardware robot equipped with a high-resolution tactile sensor, enabling reinforced learning in a realistic …

Perceived And Recorded Temperature In Aircraft Cabins During 143 Flights, Matthew Nicholls, Peter Vink

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This essay reports on the perceived and recorded temperature in aircraft cabins during 143 flights. In each flight, passengers reported their experience. They recorded temperature and humidity after boarding and one hour later. The reports show that fewer than half of the passengers perceived the temperature as “good.” Most passengers (39%) perceived it as hot, and some (17%) perceived it as cold. Comparing the temperatures with guidelines shows that 18% of the recorded temperatures in the cabin were empirically too hot and 2% empirically too cold. The differences between passengers in what they perceive as a good temperature are large, …

The aim of this application is to improve pilots’ familiarity with airports, ultimately helping to reduce runway incursions, with the goals of being interactive, affordable, easily accessible, and designed for use on mobile devices. We applied a systems engineering approach that adheres to human factors engineering principles to ensure user-friendly design and optimization of the interaction …

The Economics And Productivity Of Us Cow-Calf Production, Richard Nehring, Hannah Shear, Kelvin L. Leibold, Andrew Swanson Jan 2025

The Economics And Productivity Of Us Cow-Calf Production, Richard Nehring, Hannah Shear, Kelvin L. Leibold, Andrew Swanson

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

We explore US beef cow-calf production in 2018 and estimate net returns, returns to scale, and technical efficiency associated with backgrounding versus nonbackgrounding by size and production system. We determine the relative profitability of cow-calf operations by type, region, and size. Results, using both stochastic production frontier analysis and data envelopment analysis, indicate that larger operations tend to be more scale and technically efficient than smaller operations. While larger operations may be more scale and technically efficient and have lower variable costs per cow, off-farm income helps smaller operations become competitive. The availability of detailed cost of production information in …

Imagining Better: Requiring Trust And Imagination In Formal Engineering Education, Sneha Rathi, Jacqueline Handley Jan 2025

Imagining Better: Requiring Trust And Imagination In Formal Engineering Education, Sneha Rathi, Jacqueline Handley

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Teachers and students bear the brunt of enacting K–12 engineering while having little input into engineering practices or values. In this reflective essay, a high school engineering teacher and an engineering education researcher reflect on a class bridging engineering and social justice. We describe the development of politicized trust with each other and students while partnering around shared commitments at a predominately Black school (e.g., Vakil et al., 2016). We also explore challenges in decentering conceptions of engineering derived from depoliticized, exclusionary practice. We demonstrate an urgent need to center educators and students from marginalized identities in formal engineering education.

A Continuum Mechanical Model Of The Brain During Closed Head Injury, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2025

A Continuum Mechanical Model Of The Brain During Closed Head Injury, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Exactly how traumatic axonal injury happens as a result of brief, intense acceleration of the head remains a mystery. The same can be said about traumatic microbleeds observed in MRI scans of people suffering concussions. This paper explores the mechanism of injury in terms of continuum biomechanics. A full-sized viscoelastic model of the human brain is developed that is subjected to impact with the rigid skull after crossing the subarachnoid space in response to brief, intense whole head acceleration, as might occur in falls or in contact sports. The brain is considered a compressible viscoelastic body of approximately uniform density, …

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The risk of national food supply disruptions is linked to both domestic production and food imports. But assessments of climate change risks for food systems typically focus on the impacts on domestic production, ignoring climate impacts in supplying regions. Here, we use global crop modeling data in combination with current trade flows to evaluate potential climate change impacts on national food supply, comparing impacts on domestic production alone (domestic production impacts) to impacts considering how climate change impacts production in all source regions (consumption impact). Under 2°C additional global mean warming over present day, our analysis highlights that climate impacts …

Application Of Physics-Informed Neural Networks On Crop Yield Prediction At Multiple Scales, Aditya P. Prabhu, Pratishtha Poudel, James V. Krogmeier

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Accurately predicting crop yields is a critical challenge in sustainable agriculture, food security, and farm management. Traditional process-based models rely on agronomic domain knowledge, crop physiology and statistical approaches, while purely data-driven approaches leverage machine learning or deep learning models using meteorological and spatial data. Unfortunately, these black-box models(Data-drive approaches) often lack interpretability and fail to incorporate well-established physical principles. This project explores a hybrid approach by implementing Physics Informed Neural Networks, mainly, physics-based recurrent neural networks (PI-RNNs) for time-series yield prediction. PINNs allow for the integration of scientific knowledge directly into the model by embedding physical laws as constraints …

Backcalculated Dynamic Modulus Master Curve From The Time Histories Of Falling Weight Deflectometer Surface Deflections, Mohammad Ali Notani, Seonghwan Cho, John E. Haddock

JTRP Technical Reports

Accurate structural evaluation of flexible pavements is important for cost-efficient maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) strategies. Traditional back-calculation methods based on Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data assume elastic behavior, overlooking the viscoelastic nature of asphalt materials and subsequently leading to inaccuracies. This study introduces a mechanistic-based back-calculation technique to estimate the dynamic modulus (E*) master curve directly from FWD time-history data. By integrating layered elastic theory with viscoelastic principles, the proposed method first determines the relaxation modulus, E(t), using Differential-Time Fourier Transform (DTFT) analysis. This time-domain response is then converted into the frequency domain to construct the E* master …

A Study Of Suburban Arterial Safety Performance Based On Median Type, Andrew Tarko, Qiming Guo, Priya Darshini Narayanan, Mario A. Romero, Vamsi K. Bandaru

JTRP Technical Reports

Suburban arterial roadways must serve two conflicting road functions: regional mobility and access to the abutting land. The potential for conflicts between traffic passing through and traffic accessing road from the neighboring areas could raise safety concerns. Selecting an adequate cross-section is among important decisions that road designers and traffic engineers consider when mitigating the mentioned conflict. The following three alternative treatments offer different access control levels: undivided cross-section with no median, two-way left-turn lane instead of a typical median, and non-traversable median. The frequency of access points and the selected median treatment option should be commensurate.

Although it is …
