Language Use And Identity In The Cuban Community In Russia, Maria Yakushkina, Daniel J. Olson Mar 2016

Language Use And Identity In The Cuban Community In Russia, Maria Yakushkina, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

A significant body of research has begun to explore the association between language and identity, a relationship that becomes more complex when considering multilingual communities. Important for this field, a number of studies have examined the interrelation between language and identity in the Cuban population in the USA, a case in which dominant (English) and minority language (Spanish) interaction has largely resulted in language maintenance and a positive correlation between language use and ethnic identity. While the Cuban population in Russia shares cultural and historical background with the well-studied US Cuban community, key differences allow for the examination of the …

Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper Mar 2016

Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper

Purdue University Press Books

In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first is legal codes criminalizing sex acts between men and the religious doctrine that informs them. The second is the ancient Greek erotic philosophy, in which a revival of interest took place in the …

A Reconceptualization Of Identity In Sla And Writing Research, Zhaozhe Wang Mar 2016

A Reconceptualization Of Identity In Sla And Writing Research, Zhaozhe Wang

Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference

In this article, I argue for a reconceptualization of identity in SLA and writing studies that would problematize and complicate the current notion of identity as a property with or without clearly-defined boundaries and that views the construction and negotiation of identity as unidirectional.

This talk offers a behind-the-scenes look at the development process, including information about needs assessments, context constraints (such as funding and time), goals, topics, methods, and the creation of interactive training content. Although I offer specific examples of topics and some sample activities used in our …

The Speaking Birds: A Cognitive Approach To The Symbolic Representation Of Animals In Literature, Valentina Concu Mar 2016

The Speaking Birds: A Cognitive Approach To The Symbolic Representation Of Animals In Literature, Valentina Concu

Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference

In this paper, I analyze the metaphoric and symbolic associations of birds with wisdom and knowledge, which was triggered by the long historical observation of these animals from sides of scientists and writers. In particular, I focus on the use of animals to create metaphorical symbols in literature and on the representation of birds in active figures in the narration in "The Saga of the Volsungs", "The Poetic Edda", Richard Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelungs" and the Brother Grimm's Version of "Cinderella". In these works, birds are not just merely objects of descriptions and passive presences in the writers' minds: …

Learning The Language Of Academic Engineering: Sociocognitive Writing In Graduate Students, Catherine G. P. Berdanier

Open Access Dissertations

Although engineering graduate programs rarely require academic writing courses, the indicators of merit in academic engineering, such as journal publications, successful grants, and doctoral milestones (e.g. theses, dissertations) are based in effective written argumentation and disciplinary discourse. Further, graduate student attrition averages 57% across all disciplines, with some studies classifying up to 50% of these students as “ABD” (All But Dissertation.) In engineering disciplines specifically, graduate attrition rates across the U.S. average 36% (both Master’s and PhD students), according to the Council of Graduate Schools. The lack of socialization is generally noted as a main reason for graduate attrition, one …

Said And The Mythmaking Of Auerbach's Mimesis, Hyeryung Hwang Mar 2016

Said And The Mythmaking Of Auerbach's Mimesis, Hyeryung Hwang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Said and the Mythmaking of Auerbach's Mimesis" Hyeryung Hwang revisits critical debates on Edward W. Said's unwitting participation in the mythmaking of Erich Auerbach's Mimesis and analyzes the degree to which critical discourse overlook what Said actually wanted to revive, namely the spirit of philological methodology. Hwang argues that before Said worked on Mimesis, the book already acquired a sort of myth. Hwang attempts to go beyond the commonly held understanding of philology and suggest it as a methodology for historical synthesis whose dialectical tension between texts and history amounts to the synthesis of "fact" …

(Im)Migrant And Ethnic Minority Literature In Education Curricula In Slovenia, Marijanca Ajša Vižintin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "(Im)migrant and Ethnic Minority Literature in Education Curricula in Slovenia" Marijanca Ajša Vižintin argues that there is a need to develop in the educational system of Slovenia a comprehensive theoretical and applied approach for the inclusion of (im)migrant and ethnic minority students: in addition to writers who represent the Slovenian majority population, school curricula should include members of Slovenian (im)migrant and ethnic minority members of the country irrespective of the language in which they write. In accordance with this objective and recommendation, the reading and study of the cultural production of (im)migrant and ethnic minority texts ought …

Anthropological Inquiry And The Limits Of Dialogue, Kathleen M. Gallagher Mar 2016

Anthropological Inquiry And The Limits Of Dialogue, Kathleen M. Gallagher

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Anthropological Inquiry and the Limits of Dialogue" Kathleen Gallagher analyzes the epistemological and ethical implications created by representations of Self and portrayals of Other in two apparently different ethnographic texts, R.F. Fortune's Sorcerers of Dobu and Kevin Dwyer's Moroccan Dialogues. Specific attention is paid to the authors' portrayal of themselves and the observed and the ramifications of such portrayals in the construction of anthropological knowledge. Dwyer's work was a reaction to what he perceived as anthropology's traditional muting of other voices, an alternative to such denigration being the incorporation of dialogue into one's methodology. Gallagher describes …

The Role Of Code-Switching And Language Context In Bilingual Phonetic Transfer, Daniel J. Olson Feb 2016

The Role Of Code-Switching And Language Context In Bilingual Phonetic Transfer, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present study examines the effect of two potential catalysts for interlanguage phonetic interaction, code-switching and language mode, on the production of voice onset time (VOT) to better understand the role of (near) simultaneous dual language activation on phonetic production, as well as the nature of phonetic transfer. An oral production paradigm was carried out in which Spanish–English bilinguals produced words with initial voiceless stops as non-switched tokens, code-switched tokens in an otherwise monolingual context, and code-switched tokens in a bilingual context. Results demonstrated a degree of phonetic transfer associated with code-switching, either unidirectional or bi-directional. Specifically, English, with long …

The Perceptual Impact Of Naming Colors, Sun Young Ahn Jan 2016

The Perceptual Impact Of Naming Colors, Sun Young Ahn

Open Access Theses

Color is a spectrum of light, and a color is defined by its three physical properties, hue, value and intensity. When colors come to the discourse in the real life or industries, they are communicated by their names. Especially, the industries that mainly deal with colors as their products develop their own unique color-naming system while ordinary people tend to use general color names such as red, light blue or dark green. Color names not only define physical properties of a color, but also contribute to building an impression of a color by stimulating associations.

A Historical And Sociolinguistic Approach To Language Change In Mandarin Chinese: Corpus Evidence For The Development Of You-Mei-You, Wenfeng Li Jan 2016

A Historical And Sociolinguistic Approach To Language Change In Mandarin Chinese: Corpus Evidence For The Development Of You-Mei-You, Wenfeng Li

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation introduces corpus-based analyses of a syntactic construction in Standard Mandarin, YOU-MEI-YOU (or ‘have-not-have’)+VP, which is used to form perfective questions. The purpose of the study is to (i) find evidence for the claim that preverbal YOU-MEI-YOU, i.e. YOU-MEI-YOU found in the new construction, is grammaticalizing into an auxiliary unit, and (ii) to investigate its historical development, including the stage of development that it has reached and its distribution over time. Using data from two databases, the present study first looks at the percentage of preverbal YOU-MEI-YOU conveying a certain grammatical meaning, i.e. sentence type and aspect. Next, the …

Being And Literature: The Disclosure Of Place In Modernity, Donovan Irven Martin Jan 2016

Being And Literature: The Disclosure Of Place In Modernity, Donovan Irven Martin

Open Access Dissertations

The dissertation develops an original ontology of place by reading Modernist literature (1864-1950) as a critical reaction to Modern philosophy (1641-1800), and builds a platform upon movements implicit in literature from which future metaphysical and epistemological inquiries can begin. Western metaphysics and epistemology have been conditioned by the Cartesian commitment to the ego cogito, primarily understood as a subject to which the world appears as represented in concepts or ideas. The postmodern and deconstructive criticisms of such philosophical foundations – and indeed, on the very notion of foundation itself – have become well worn, but have failed to offer a …

Saying The World Anew: A Philosophical Understanding Of Communication As Testimony, Jessica Nicole Sturgess Jan 2016

Saying The World Anew: A Philosophical Understanding Of Communication As Testimony, Jessica Nicole Sturgess

Open Access Dissertations

This study develops a philosophy of communication by investigating the crisis of directionality that follows from the dissolution of foundationalist metaphysics. Drawing from fundamental ontology and philosophical hermeneutics, this project suggests we shift our understanding of communication as a process of information exchange toward communication as an enactment of testimony. This leads to an examination of the rhetorical figure of hyperbole. It is argued that hyperbole offers unique insight into the ground of communication as all communicative acts are, in their ontological structure, hyperbolic. Moreover, this hyperbolic characterization of communication highlights the role of excess, inexpressibility, risk, and extravagance central …

Africa Is Always Bringing Forth Something New: African Worlds And Worldviews In British Enlightenment Literature, 1660-1780, Rebekah Kurtz Mitsein Jan 2016

Africa Is Always Bringing Forth Something New: African Worlds And Worldviews In British Enlightenment Literature, 1660-1780, Rebekah Kurtz Mitsein

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation argues that African worlds and worldviews left an indelible mark on British Enlightenment texts, whether their authors encountered the continent first or secondhand. As eighteenth-century thinkers began experimenting with empirical and categorical strategies for making sense of the globe, Africa was an important testing ground for these burgeoning epistemological methodologies. Travelers and writers tried to reconcile observer-based methods of knowledge production with the continent’s reputedly impenetrable landscapes, unfamiliar cultures, and strange animals. Such inquiries engendered broader philosophical debates about the natures of nature, the body, and the self. Yet, I contend Africa was not a passive participant in …
