Assessing Toolbox Talk Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of International Best Practices And Indian Construction Realities, Shrinidhi Shankar, Nikhil Bugalia
Assessing Toolbox Talk Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of International Best Practices And Indian Construction Realities, Shrinidhi Shankar, Nikhil Bugalia
CIB Conferences
Toolbox Talks (TBTs) serve as the primary mechanism for task-level hazard communication on construction sites worldwide; however, their effectiveness in contexts outside North America and Europe remains poorly understood. This paper presents one of the first systematic examinations of TBT practice on Indian construction sites, combining semi-structured interviews with 14 safety professionals and a PRISMA-guided systematic review of 30 international studies spanning more than 10 national contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies structural constraints unique to Indian construction, including multilingual workforces, daily wage employment systems, multi-tier subcontracting, and the legal exposure of site engineers, all of which fundamentally …

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Many topics in the behavioral sciences and epidemiology require researchers to directly observe entities (e.g., individuals, households) over a long time to identify lasting effects. Long-term panel data collection is more common in high-income countries than in small-scale rural societies (SSRS) of low-income countries. SSRS are mobile, nature-dependent, linguistic minorities, and highly autarkic. Analyzing such data using a life-course perspective can help uncover patterns that align or upend what we know from high-income countries. This study a) reviews long (>∼10 year) panels in SSRS (n = 9), b) extends the analysis to cover somewhat comparable societies of smallholders (n …
Developmental Trajectories Of Phonological And Morphological Awareness: Implications For Literacy Instruction, Hyohyun Shin, Catherine Mcbride
Developmental Trajectories Of Phonological And Morphological Awareness: Implications For Literacy Instruction, Hyohyun Shin, Catherine Mcbride
Science of Reading
We examine how phonological awareness and morphological awareness develop across early childhood and discuss the implications of these developmental trajectories for literacy instruction. Drawing on previous research, we highlight that these cognitive-linguistic skills develop in predictable progressions. We argue that understanding these developmental trajectories is essential for designing literacy instruction that is both evidence-based and developmentally appropriate.

Cultural Negotiations In Revisionist Mythmaking: Comparative Reading Of Bahram Beyzaei And Mary Zimmerman, Sepehr Karimi Mr., Bahee Hadaegh
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Although more than fifty years have passed since feminist scholars pioneered revisionist mythmaking, drama remains underexplored in this field despite its unique potential for cultural and social reinterpretation. This study offers a comparative analysis of revisionist mythmaking in Iranian and American drama, specifically examining Bahram Beyzaei’s play, One Thousand and First Night alongside Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses as examples. This research aims to establish general principles for revisionist mythmaking within drama, spotlighting the complexities that emerge in transnational contexts. It explores how Beyzaei and Zimmerman negotiate cultural narratives and try to reshape traditional stories and reflect contemporary issues, emphasizing gender dynamics …

Christian Motifs In Forough Farrokhzad’S Works: A Comparison With T.S. Eliot’S Poetry, Mona Monsefi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Forough Farrokhzad’s (1934–1967) film The House is Black (1962) is a visual poem set in a leprosarium in Iran. Farrokhzad was a prominent modernist poet who merged poetry with contemporary art forms, primarily cinema. In this film, she employed a camera to express her poetic vision, highlighting her signature style that prioritizes unique imagery. This emphasis on visual and literary images is often intertwined with themes such as religion. Notably, Farrokhzad recomposed verses from the Old Testament, infusing them with her poetic language to enrich the film’s narrative. This article explores her unique, Western-influenced interpretation of Christian motifs in …

Working At The Margins In Interwar Yugoslavia, Stefano Petrungaro
Working At The Margins In Interwar Yugoslavia, Stefano Petrungaro
Central European Studies
Prostitutes, beggars, folk healers, peddlers, wandering artists, and bear-leaders: Working at the Margins in Interwar Yugoslavia shows how work shaped their relations with the state and the rest of their world. The protagonists of the book’s story lived on the fringes of society and engaged in activities that were only partially recognized, from a legal and social point of view, as proper jobs, while some of them had no job at all. This book looks at Yugoslavia’s disciplining and social engineering practices through the lens of socially marginal workers. The analysis shows that in this period the South Slav regions …

Motivating K-12 Students To Read Independently, Breanya Hogue, Yilin Shen, Jorge Perez De Jesus
Science of Reading
As we consider the technical aspects of the Science of Reading (SOR), which include advancing the skills of reading within phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, a prerequisite or simultaneous efforts should be placed towards building self-motivated readers. Developing motivated readers actually intersects with many of the SOR skills as it involves the practice of building oral reading skills, structured read alouds, vocabulary development, fluency building and more (Ariyanti & Qomar, 2016; Nevo et al., 2020; Toste et al, 2020). Motivating readers is an interconnected process which begins as early as infancy and beyond. Each section of this brief …

How Teachers Can Apply Learning Theories To The Five Pillars Of The Science Of Reading, Jennifer Renn
How Teachers Can Apply Learning Theories To The Five Pillars Of The Science Of Reading, Jennifer Renn
Science of Reading
This brief provides an introduction to six learning theories and guidance on how they can be used to teach the pillars of the science of reading (SOR). Because SOR is rooted in a broad range of interdisciplinary research and covers several key competencies, classroom teachers may be overwhelmed and uncertain of how to best meet students’ needs. There is also a tendency to use instructional strategies and techniques that include student repetition and recognition of information. While these approaches can help students learn to read and write, teachers should consider using a range of learning theories to better align instruction …

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy
High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy
Science of Reading
Indiana is one of a few states to enact a high stakes literacy test in third grade, the IREAD-3 test. High stakes testing is often a useful way to ensure a particular level of academic proficiency is met to allow students to succeed in a new setting, like college, or leave high school with desired skills. However, the requirement to automatically retain third graders who do not pass the IREAD-3 test without additional information or considerations, is not supported by research (AERA, 2000). These data highlight the critical need for educators and administrators to understand high-stakes standardized tests, as they …

Humanizing Online Learning Through Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Preserving Cultural Identity And Human Connection In Digital Spaces, Michael Mills
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The rapid shift to online and hybrid learning environments has highlighted the need for culturally responsive pedagogical approaches in digital spaces. While much research has explored culturally responsive teaching in traditional classrooms, less attention has been paid to how these principles can be effectively translated to online learning environments. This article examines how culturally responsive pedagogy can be meaningfully integrated into online learning spaces through intentional course design, assessment practices, and community building. Drawing from existing literature on culturally responsive teaching, online learning, and digital equity, this paper provides a framework for educators to create more inclusive and culturally sustaining …

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This study explores how six education faculty members in the School of Education at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the southeastern United States interpret and implement instructional technology instruction through a hermeneutic theoretical lens. Grounded in the HBCU’s School of Education vision statement, the research investigates how faculty members’ understanding of human learning behaviors shapes their pedagogical choices within School of Education courses. The qualitative analysis revealed three key themes: (1) Technology as a Tool for Equity and Inclusion, (2) Alignment with the School of Education Vision, and (3) Student-Centered, Practice-Oriented Use of Technology. Rather than employing …

Las Filipinas: The Persistence Of Spain In Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters, Blake Seana Locklin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay argues for the significance of the legacy of Spain in Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters. Critical analyses have explored many aspects of the novel's portrayal of relations between the Philippines and the United States, a more recent colonizer whose influence on politics and culture is prominent in Dogeaters. The effects of Spanish colonization are more subtle in the novel, but pervade its representation of characters, language, and society. While highlighting the fragmentation of individual and national identities, Dogeaters depicts a Philippines in which many social and political problems have roots in the Spanish colonial era. Building on the …
The History Of Teaching Indonesian In The United States And Its Pedagogical Shift In The Late 20th Century, Eko Widianto, G.G. Weix, Michael Cullinane
The History Of Teaching Indonesian In The United States And Its Pedagogical Shift In The Late 20th Century, Eko Widianto, G.G. Weix, Michael Cullinane
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
The history of teaching Indonesian in the United States has received limited scholarly attention, despite the field's existence for over eighty years. This study traces its development and identifies three main phases. The first phase began during World War II, when Indonesian was taught primarily to meet military needs through a structural and drill-based approach. In the 1960s and 1970s, instruction was restructured to support academic research, with teaching materials and classroom practices aimed at developing reading skills and preparing students for fieldwork. From the late twentieth century onward, Indonesian programs increasingly adopted communicative approaches influenced by broader trends in …

Abstract: This article tells the story of an interdisciplinary hackathon emphasizing exploration, collaboration, and creative engagement with globalization-related cultural datasets. Participants worked in teams to produce research posters, which were then presented at the opening of the international conference Image Deluge & Globalization in Geneva. The article discusses three projects: one on 19th-century Spanish chapbooks using topic modeling and network analysis; another on leopard motifs in print imagery; and a third on olfactory heritage. The hackathon highlighted both the potential and the limitations of working with digital cultural data, offering insights into interdisciplinary methods.

Mapping The Multifarious Image In Time Of Globalization, Anne-Laure Oberson
Artl@s Bulletin
Abstract: In this paper, I examine the evolving concept of the image, exploring the philosophical implications of its complex, multifaceted nature. I question the value of terms such as icon, simulacrum, and image in reference to Gilles Deleuze’s text Difference and Repetition. I argue for a pluralistic approach to understanding images as they embody more than a duality of visible-invisible dimensions. I seek to capture the multifariousness of the image to understand its transformative power. In conclusion, the paper suggests reevaluating image discourse to better engage with the evolution of its implications in a global context.

Brute Force Branding: Variations & Repetitions Of The Almighty Dollar Banknote, Rui-Long Monico
Artl@s Bulletin
Abstract: This paper examines the U.S. dollar as a global brand and mythic icon, revealing how its stable aesthetic asserts dominance and infiltrates daily life. Through visual analysis and global comparison, it shows how banknotes are battlegrounds where art, identity, and geopolitics collide—currency as a weapon of soft power and cultural hegemony. The dollar’s visual inertia—ritualized, repeated, reappropriated—cements its supremacy as a symbolic force, where repetition enforces authority and variation sparks both resistance and conformity. Banknotes emerge as tools of statecraft and vessels of collective memory, as reflected in the author’s bespoke creation accompanying this study.

What Makes Art Images Travel So Well? Repetition, Variation, And The Global Life Of Images, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
What do we actually know about how images become global? This article takes stock of current approaches to studying their worldwide circulation. Drawing on findings from the Visual Contagions project—which maps 15 million illustrations across 18,000 periodicals in more than 50 countries—we now see that in the age of print, only a small fraction of images traveled widely, with art reproductions proving to be the most mobile. The central question, then, is whether this broader circulation of art images is linked to their formal power. When examined from multiple perspectives, the answer cannot be a simple yes. Visual circulation also …
