Inference And Decision-Making With Partial Knowledge, S. Rasoul Safavian, David Landgrebe
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Bayesian inference and decision making requires elici1:ation of prior probabilities and sampling distributions. In many applica~tions such as exploratory data analysis, however, it may not be possible to construct the prior probabilities or the sampling distributions precisely. The objective of this thesis is to address the issues and provide some solutions to the problem of inference and decision making with imprecise or partially known priors and sampling distributions. More specifically, we will address the following three interrelated problems:( 1) how to describe imprecise priors and sampling distributions, (2) how to proceed from approximate priors and sampling distributions to approximate posteriors …

Storing Logical Form In A Shared-Packed. Forest, Mary P. Harper
Storing Logical Form In A Shared-Packed. Forest, Mary P. Harper
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
To compactly represent sentences containing syntactic ambiguity until the necessary information has been processed to refine the meaning, we have modified an all-path context-free grammar parser to generate a shared-packed parse forest annotated with logical form. An annotated shared-packed forest cannot contain every representation of a highly ambiguous sentence without using an intractable amount of space. Hence, our program stores procedure calls for creating all possible logical forms for a c.onstituent in the forest. The resulting forest contains the same number of nodes and is not much bigger than the original forest. Furthermore, the stored procedural information can be used …

Parsec: A Constraint-Based Parser For Spoken Language Processing, Mary P. Harper, Randall A. Helzerman
Parsec: A Constraint-Based Parser For Spoken Language Processing, Mary P. Harper, Randall A. Helzerman
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
PARSEC (1), a text-based and spoken language processing framework based on the Constraint Dependency Grammar (CDG) developed by Maruyama [26,27], is discussed. The scope of CDG is expanded to allow for the analysis of sentences containing lexically ambiguous words, to allow feature analysis in constraints, and to efficiently process multiple sentence candidates that are likely to arise in spoken language processing. The benefits of the CDG parsing approach are summarized. Additionally, the development CDG grammars using PARSEC grammar writing tools and the implementation of the PARSEC parser for word graphs is discussed. (1) Parallel ARchitecture Sentence Constrainer

A Fuzzy Precompensator Design For Pd Control Of Systems With Deadzones, Jong-Hwan Kim, Jong-Hwan Park, Seon-Woo Lee, Edwin K. P. Chong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Simple conventional control methods, such as PD and PID controllers, are widely used in industrial applications. Such controllers exhibit poor performance when applied to systems containing nonlinearities arising from unknown deadzones. In this report, we propose a novel fuzzy logic-based precompensation approach for controlling systems with deadzones. The control structure consists of a fuzzy logic-based precompensator followed by a conventional PD controller. Our proposed control scheme shows superior transient and steady-state performance compared to conventional PD and PID controllers. In addition, the scheme is robust to variations in deadzone nonlinearities, as well as the steady-state gain of the plant. We …
