Disaggregating Labor Payments By Skill Level In Gtap, Jing Liu, Nico Van Leeuwen, Tri Thanh Vo, Rod Tyers, Thomas Hertel Sep 1998

Disaggregating Labor Payments By Skill Level In Gtap, Jing Liu, Nico Van Leeuwen, Tri Thanh Vo, Rod Tyers, Thomas Hertel

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper outlines an approach to disaggregating labor payments in the GTAP, global economic data base. The split between low- and high-skilled labor is based on occupational data. High-skilled labor is assumed to consist of managers, administrators, professionals, and para-professionals.

Data are gathered on this occupational split, by sector, in fifteen different economies, and these are mapped to GTAP sectors. Regression analysis shows a systematic relationship between GDP per capita and the national stock of tertiary and secondary educated labor on the one hand, and the sectoral labor payments split on the other.

This model is used to predict labor …

Scale Economies And Imperfect Competition In The Gtap Model, Joseph Francois Sep 1998

Scale Economies And Imperfect Competition In The Gtap Model, Joseph Francois

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

The universe of existing CGE models can be divided into 3 broad categories. The first class of models (of which the standard GTAP model is a classic example) emphasizes the static effects of policy related to general equilibrium resource reallocation. The second involves scale economics and imperfect competition and the third involves dynamic accumulation effects. Development of the second class of models has followed a long period during which many of the basic tenants of modern industrial organization theory were integrated into the core of mainstream trade theory. The resulting class of applied models emphasizes procompetitive effects. This paper presents …

Unsupervised Classification And Choice Of Classes: Bayesian Approach, R. L. Kashyap, Srinivas Sista Jul 1998

Unsupervised Classification And Choice Of Classes: Bayesian Approach, R. L. Kashyap, Srinivas Sista

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We have given a solution to the problem of unsupervised classifica, tioll of multidinlensional data. Our approach is based on Bayesian estimation which regards the number of classes, the data partition and the parameter vectors that describe the density of classes as unknowns. We compute their MAP estimates simultaneously by maximizing their joint posterior -probability density given the data. The concept of partition as a variable to be estimated hasn't been considered. This formulation also solves the problem of validating clusters obtained from various methods. Our method can also incorporate any additional information &about a class while assigning its prohability density. …

Jitter Control And Dynamic Resource Management For Multimedia Communication Over Broadband Network, Ahmed Bashandy, Edwin Chong, Arif Ghafoor Jun 1998

Jitter Control And Dynamic Resource Management For Multimedia Communication Over Broadband Network, Ahmed Bashandy, Edwin Chong, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Due to the isochronous nature of multimedia streams, jitter management; represents a major challenge to synchronized and timely presentation of multimedia documents. For controlling jitter, we propose the Initial Delay Regulator (IDR). This regulator is based on a network model which abstracts jitter parameters inside a data network. As a result of employing such a regulator, jitter at the destination node can be reduced. and possibly eliminated. depending on resource availability. The IDR is simple enough to be implemented wing specialized hardware. Since IDR is memory intensive, two dynamic resource allocation schemes are presented for hard and soft QoS requirements. …

Rescuing Rover: A First Aid And Disaster Guide For Dog Owners, Sebastian E. Heath

Purdue University Press Books

Whether you're hiking with your canine friend in a remote area or work with a dog on a search-and-rescue team or police force, you need to be prepared for emergencies when veterinary service is not available. Rescuing Rover: A First Aid and Disaster Guide for Dog Owners provides dog owners, handlers, and emergency physicians with an understandable guide for safe treatment until the dog can be transported to a veterinarian. Although a number of books describe some techniques for the emergency care of dogs, there is no single illustrated summary that is as practical. With its concise, easy-to-read instructions, detailed …

Classification Of High Dimensional Data, Pi-Fuei Hsieh, David Landgrebe May 1998

Classification Of High Dimensional Data, Pi-Fuei Hsieh, David Landgrebe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Multispectral sensors have been used to gather data about the Earth's surface since the 1960's. Data analysis methods for multispectral data with less than 20 or so spectral bands have been studied and have given satisfactory results. As opposed to such multispectral sensors, the new generation of remote sensors, referred to as hyperspectral sensors, have hundreds of contiguous narrow spectral bands. These hyperspectral sensors, which feature high spectral resolution, fine spatial resolution, and a large dynamic range, have led to the hope that a wide variety of resources on the surface of the earth will likely be explored and identified. …

Bounds On The Trained Vector Quantizer Distortion Measured Using Training Data, Dong Sik Kim, Mark R. Bell Apr 1998

Bounds On The Trained Vector Quantizer Distortion Measured Using Training Data, Dong Sik Kim, Mark R. Bell

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Quantzzat~onc an effectively reduce the huge amount of data with possibly small error (called quantzzatton error). In designing a quantizer using a portion of the data as a training data, the training algorithm tries to find a codebook that minimizes the quantization error measured in the training data. It is known that, under several conditions, the minimized quantizat.ion error approaches the opt, imal error for the underlying distribution of the training data as the training data size increases. In this report, an upper bound for the minimized quantization error from the training data is derived as a function of the ratio …

Multi-Flux Formulation Of The Boltzmann Equation For Carrier Transport In Semiconductors, Kausar Banoo, Mark Lundstrom Apr 1998

Multi-Flux Formulation Of The Boltzmann Equation For Carrier Transport In Semiconductors, Kausar Banoo, Mark Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report describes how the Boltzmann Transport Equation for carrier transport in s~~miconductocrasn be formulated in a manner suit able for numerical simulation. It arose from an effort to generalise earlier work which used pre-computed scattering matrices to solve the Boltzmann Transport Equation. It also generalises the formulation used to treat neutron transport so that energy band-structure, scattering in semiconductors and electric fields can be treated. We present two different, but relat, ed formulations here. One is a first-order formulation in terrns of directed fluxes in 3 dirnensional space and the other is a second-order form which can be written …

Resource-Usage Prediction For Demand-Based Network-Computing, Nirav H. Kapadia, Carla E. Brodley, José A. B. Fortes, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This document reports on an application of artificial intelligence to achieve demand-based scheduling within the context of a network-computing infrastructure. The described A1 sub-system uses tool-specific, run-time input to predict the resoura:-usage characteristics of runs. Instance-based learning with locally weighted polynornial regression is employed because of the need to simultaneoi~sly learn multiplr: polynomial concepts and the fact that knowledge is acquired increnlentally in this dornain. An innovative combination of a two-level knowledge base, and age and usage s~.atisticsa re used to: a) detect inadequate and noisy feature-vectors, 13) account for short-term variations in compute-server and network performance, and c) exploit …

Leakage Grading Of Inputs To Cmos Logic, Mark C. Johnson, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Supply voltages and threshold voltages continue to be aggressively scaled down in order to obtain power reduction, performance improvement, and increasing integration density. This leads to leakage current becoming a much more significant component of power than it has been in the past. We have previously shown that substantial leakage reduction can be achieved in single Vt circuits by turning off stitcks of transistors. A theoretical model was also derived which predicts the quiescent leakage current and the idle time required to reach quiescent levels. In this report, we will review the leakage estimation model, outline a method for evaluating …
