The Use Of Landsat Data In A Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (Lacie), R. B. Macdonald, F. G. Hall, R. B. Erb
LARS Symposia
A Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE) has been under taken jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the Department of Commerce and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to prove out an economically important application of remote sensing from space. At the outset LACIE will concentrate on wheat grown in the North American area. The experiment will combine crop area measurements obtained from LANDSAT data and meteorological information from NOAA satellites and from ground stations designed to relate weather conditions to yield assessment and ultimately to production forecasts. The Department …
Single-Class Classification, T. C. Minter
Single-Class Classification, T. C. Minter
LARS Symposia
Often, when classifying multispectral data, only one class or crop is of interest, such as wheat in the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). Usual procedures for designing a Bayes classifier require that labeled training samples and therefore ground truth be available for the "class of interest" plus all confusion classes defined by the multispectral data. This paper will consider the problem of designing a two-class Bayes classifier which will classify data into the "class of interest" or the "other" classes but will require only labeled training samples from the "class of interest" to design the classifier. Thus, this classifier …
Resolution Enhancement Of Erts Imagery, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer, G. Mobasseri
Resolution Enhancement Of Erts Imagery, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer, G. Mobasseri
LARS Symposia
A method is described for combined interpolation and enhancement of ERTS multispectral scanner data sets. Previous research has shown that good enhancement is most easily achieved when there are a large number of data points contained within the radius of gyration of the system point spread function. This requirement can be met using ERTS data by interpolating the data before enhancement. By varying the interpolation scale factor the data set can be empirically matched to a precalculated optimum restoration filter. Once the proper match of data and filter has been found the enhancement can be carried out directly or the …
Machine Processing Of Remotely Sensed Data For Change Detection, Stephen G. Luther, Michael L. Yanner
Machine Processing Of Remotely Sensed Data For Change Detection, Stephen G. Luther, Michael L. Yanner
LARS Symposia
Remote sensing can furnish a quantitative method for detecting change in earth surface features. LANDSAT-1 MSS data was temporally overlayed and geometrically corrected. Data from one date was then classified and a LARSYS results tape produced. Data from the second date was then similarly processed. Classifications for the same geographical area were then available for two (or more) dates. These classifications were then compared on a point by point basis by the computer to determine the type and location Of changes occurring for the intervening period between data sets.
Two applications of this post-classification change detection technique were made. The …

Software For Geometrical Transformation Of Digital Data Used For Remote Sensing Applications, Nancy A. Jones, J. D. Nichols, Frank G. Harvey, Paul R. Ritter, Michael J. Gialdini
LARS Symposia
The Remote Sensing Research Program University of California at Berkeley has developed a regression-based XY transform methodology and supporting computer software to accurately and cost-effectively transform one- and two-dimensional digital data from one geometrical coordinate system to another. First, control points common to both the original coordinate system and the desired output system are located with respect to each system. Second. the control points and the desired equation form are input to a statistical package program which performs a least-squares regression analysis of the point; to yield transform equation coefficients. Third, the original coordinates of a one-dimensional line segment or …

LARS Symposia
Three approaches to computer-aided analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS data were evaluated utilizing data from a test site in rugged, mountainous terrain. The approaches compared include non-supervised (clustering), modified supervised, and modified clustering. Test field results indicated classification accuracies of 78.5%, 70.0%, and 84.7%, respectively for the three analysis techniques. The modified clustering approach proved to be the optimal computer- aided analysis technique of those tested because of minimal computer time required, highest classification accuracy, and most effective analyst/data interaction. A detailed description of this analysis technique is included.

The Image Display And Manipulation System (Idams), William L. Alford
LARS Symposia
The Image Display and Manipulation System (IDAMS) is an interactive image analysis system consisting of a general purpose computer, a TV display and control console, and software. This paper describes the system features and capabilities. A scenario approach which simplifies the user interface is defined and is illustrated by an application of a scenario to multispectral classification. Included is a brief description of the Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS), a new interactive image analysis system currently being implemented at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).
Digital Image Reconstruction And Resampling For Geometric Manipulation, K. W. Simon
Digital Image Reconstruction And Resampling For Geometric Manipulation, K. W. Simon
LARS Symposia
The problems of digital image registration and geometric correction can be subdivided into two parts: 1) determination of the warping function which will transform the geometry of the scene to the desired geometric coordinate system; and 2) processing of the digital image intensity samples, given the warping function, to produce image samples on the desired coordinate grid. The latter process, called "resampling", is a subset of the problems of image reconstruction, i.e., determination of the continuous (analog) image from a set of samples of the image, and is the subject of this paper.
This paper defines the process of image …
Signature Extension Using The Masc Algorithm, R. G. Henderson
Signature Extension Using The Masc Algorithm, R. G. Henderson
LARS Symposia
A new signature extension method for use with LANDSAT data has been developed. The MASC (Multiplicative and Additive Signature Correction) algorithm uses an unsupervised clustering routine to gain relative information from two data sets. This information is then used to map the signatures derived from one data set onto the other data set. The MASC algorithm can be totally automated, thus making it suitable for use in large area crop inventories.
This signature extension method has been tested an agricultural LANDSAT data. The results of field center pixel classification using MASC-extended signatures have been compared with classification results using untransformed …

Interactive Image Processing For Meteorological Applications At Nasa/Goddard Space Flight Center, James B. Billingsley, Frederick A. Hasler
LARS Symposia
Interactive image data processing has greatly improved the capability to extract scientific information from satellite image data. Previous methods of batch processing did not allow the scientist to interpret intermediate results on a short enough time scale to effectively modify either the data or processes as required for efficient data extraction.
A primary Goddard Space Flight Center meteorological program objective is to develop methods to improve detection and prediction of severe storms using geostationary satellite measurements. Interactive data processing systems can perform many tasks towards meeting this objective.
The development of interactive image processing techniques which have led to meteorological …

Section 208 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 provided the opportunity and funding to fight water pollution through the use of regional water quality planning. A common requirement of the 208 program is to develop a capability of predicting water quality in the rivers and lakes resulting from existing and potential land-use policies. To achieve this capability, the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana (OKI) Regional Council of Governments is developing a deterministic model capable of predicting sediment and nutrient flow into the waterways. An essential input to OKI's model is an accurate map of land use within the watersheds. This …
Canonical Analysis For Increased Classification Speed And Channel Selection, Walter Eppler
Canonical Analysis For Increased Classification Speed And Channel Selection, Walter Eppler
LARS Symposia
The quadratic form can be expressed as a monotonically increasing sum of squares when the inverse covariance matrix is represented in canonical form. This formulation has the advantage that in testing a particular class hypothesis, computations can be discontinued when the partial sum exceeds the smallest value obtained for other classes already tested. A method for channel selection is presented which arranges the original input measurements in that order which minimizes the expected number of computations. The classification algorithm was tested on data from LARS Flight Line C1 and found to reduce the sum-of-products operations by a factor of 6.7 …

Determination Of Groundwater Inflow To Prairie Lakes Using Remote Sensing, J. M. Whiting
LARS Symposia
This study was designed to find the locations in Big Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, where the transfer of surficial and aquifer groundwater occurs in the lake bed. Using the findings of a geological survey done between 1966 and 1969, and combining the results of the remote sensing techniques of ERTS, airborne radio phase detection (E-PHASE) and infrared line-scanning, it proved possible to locate nine areas at which inflow of groundwater is assumed to take place. Together these nine locations comprise an area of four square kilometers (1.5 mi²) in a lake that covers 250 square kilometers (100 mi²). In addition it …

Machine Aided Multispectral Analysis Utilizing Skylab Thermal Data For Land Use Mapping, L. L. Biehl, L. F. Silva
LARS Symposia
Eight channel Skylab multispectral scanner data obtained in January, 1974, was used in a level two land-use analysis of Allen County, Indiana. The data set which includes one visible channel, four near infrared channels, two middle infrared channels, and one far infrared channel was from the X-5 detector array of the S-192 experiment in the Earth Resources Experiment Package on board the Skylab space station. The results indicate that a good quality far infrared (thermal) channel is very valuable for land use mapping during the winter months.
