A 4-Channel Optical Film Annotator For Production Of Planometrically Correct Images, Richard Steele, Mel Flores, Paul Ritter, J. D. Nichols, Michael Gialdini, W. M. Senkus

LARS Symposia

The RSRP has designed and built an optical film annotator called EGOR. This device has the ability to produce sharp images composed of dots 2 mils in size and in 64 different grey levels from jet black to full white. It can be used in either four-or two-channel modes and can produce four images of up to 6"x9" or two images of 9"x9", respectively.

EGOR also has capabilities to eliminate or induce certain kinds of distortions, for example the "skew" and' "squish" associated with ERTS tapes. The spacing between dots in the Y dimension can be varied to close up …

This thesis contains the results of an investigation performed in order to define causes of geometric defects within digital multispectral scanner (MSS) data arrays, to analyze the nature of the resulting geometric errors, and to investigate restitution methods to correct or reduce such geometric errors.

The thesis includes a review of digital multispectral scanning systems, including the recording and digital form for computer aided analysis. Causes of geometric errors within the data arrays are presented, and previous investigations of geometric aspects of remote sensing systems are reviewed.

The introduction of geometric transformation relationships for scanned data, from which collinearity equations …

Spectral Characteristics Of Soils Related To The Interaction Of Soil Moisture, Organic Carbon, And Clay Content, Robert H. Beck Jan 1975

Spectral Characteristics Of Soils Related To The Interaction Of Soil Moisture, Organic Carbon, And Clay Content, Robert H. Beck

LARS Technical Reports

By measuring certain physical properties of fifteen soils typical of Wisconsin-aged, glacial till soils capped with less than 60 inches of loess in Indiana, the variations in spectral response in the laboratory were explained. Spectral reflectance measure with the Exotech 20-C can be significantly explained by percent moisture, organic carbon, and clay content of these soils. The soils studied were predominantly silty with a range of organic carbon from .60 to 1.33%. The moisture content of the soils was controlled by use of the pressure membrane at 15 bars, pressure plates at 1/3 bar, and oven dried at 105°C for …

Divergence Analysis Of Bendix Feature Extraction And Classification System, R. M. Dye, C. S. Chen Jan 1975

Divergence Analysis Of Bendix Feature Extraction And Classification System, R. M. Dye, C. S. Chen

LARS Symposia

Many investigators reporting on feature extraction algorithms expect a decrease in recognition accuracy as an inevitable consequence of information loss. A feature extraction procedure is introduced which through empirical study indicates an improvement in recognition rate beyond that of a maximum likelihood classifier while permitting computational economy as a result of dimensionality reduction. Average divergence is shown to have increased after the application of the feature extraction procedure.

Summary Of: Photographic Display Of Landsat-1 Cct Images For Improved Geological Definition, T. G. Longshaw, R. P. Viljoen, M. C. Hodson

LARS Symposia

LANDSAT-1 Bulk MSS Computer Compatible Tapes (CCT's) maintain the intrinsic radiometric and spatial qualities of the MSS (NASA, 19721 and as such are potentially superior to MSS 70 mm photographic products in the study of both regional and small scale geological trends. A convenient method of realising this potential is via a digital-to-analogue conversion of processed CCT data and CRT display to produce photographic hardcopy. This paper describes a flexible method of producing such displays that can be colour composited with ground-based mapping data transformed to be compatible with the MSS geometric projection. Mapping accuracy of image detail to corresponding …

The South Dakota Land Use Inventory System, Paul A. Tessar Jan 1975

The South Dakota Land Use Inventory System, Paul A. Tessar

LARS Symposia

All levels of government share the need for natural resource information. Remote Sensing and computer technology can provide a cost effective means of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing some of this data.

One of the principal areas where remotely sensed data is being applied in governmental natural resource planning is in the generation of land use, or more precisely, land cover information. The South Dakota State Planning Bureau, with assistance and technical support from the EROS Data Center, is implementing a Land Use and Natural Resource Inventory and Information System. A three phase program has been designed utilizing LANDSAT digital data …

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Landsat-1 Mss Data: A Comparison Of Three Approaches, Including A "Modified Clustering" Approach, M. D. Fleming, J. S. Berkebile, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1975

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Landsat-1 Mss Data: A Comparison Of Three Approaches, Including A "Modified Clustering" Approach, M. D. Fleming, J. S. Berkebile, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

Three approaches to computer-aided analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS data were evaluated utilizing data from a test site in rugged, mountainous terrain. The approaches compared include non-supervised (clustering), modified supervised, and modified clustering. Test field results indicated classification accuracies of 78.58, 70.0%, and 84.7%, respectively for the three analysis techniques. The modified clustering approach proved to be the optimal computer-aided analysis technique of those tested because of minimal computer time required, highest classification accuracy, and most effective analyst/data interaction. A detailed description of this analysis technique is included.

Development Of A Field Portable Bi-Channel Real Time Hybrid Image Processing System, Nelson Corby, Lester A. Gerhardt, Edward Sims

LARS Symposia

A bichannel, portable, low cost, hybrid processor capable of interactive real-time image processing for use in the field or laboratory is described. Major features of the Programmable Video Processor (PVP) such as operation as a remote pre-processor controlled by a host image processing computer facility or manual operation as a stand-alone processor, digitally programmed operating mode control and internal image statistic generation are discussed. Finally, selected applications in which the PVP has proven useful are outlined.

Data Resolution Versus Forestry Classification And Modeling, E. P. Kan, D. L. Ball, J. P. Basu, R. L. Smelser Jan 1975

Data Resolution Versus Forestry Classification And Modeling, E. P. Kan, D. L. Ball, J. P. Basu, R. L. Smelser

LARS Symposia

This paper examines the effects on timber stand computer classification accuracies caused by changes in the resolution of remotely sensed multispectral data. This investigation is valuable, especially for determining optimal sensor and platform designs.

Theoretical justification and experimental verification support the finding that classification accuracies for low resolution data could be better than the accuracies for data with higher resolution. The increase in accuracy is construed as due to the reduction of scene inhomogeneity at lower resolution. The computer classification scheme was a maximum likelihood classifier.

Image Registration Error Variance As A Measure Of Overlay Quality, C. D. Mcgillem, M. Svedlow Jan 1975

Image Registration Error Variance As A Measure Of Overlay Quality, C. D. Mcgillem, M. Svedlow

LARS Symposia

When one image (the signal) is to be registered with a second image (the signal plus noise) of the same scene, one would like to know the accuracy possible for this registration. This paper derives an estimate of the variance of the registration error that can be expected via two approaches. The solution in each instance is found to be a function of the effective bandwidth of the signal and the noise, and the signal-to-noise ratio. Application of these results to ERTS data indicates that for most cases registration variances will be significantly less than the diameter of one picture …

A General Non-Parametric Classifier Applied To Discriminating Surface Water From Terrain Shadows, W. G. Eppler Jan 1975

A General Non-Parametric Classifier Applied To Discriminating Surface Water From Terrain Shadows, W. G. Eppler

LARS Symposia

A general non-parametric classifier is described in the context of discriminating surface water from terrain shadows. In addition to using non-parametric statistics, this classifier permits the use of a cost matrix to assign different penalties to various types of misclassifications. The approach also differs from conventional classifiers in that it applies the maximum-likelihood criterion to overall class probabilities as opposed to the standard practice of choosing the most likely individual subclass. The classifier performance is evaluated using two different effectiveness measures for a specific set of ERTS data.

Digital Processing Of Infra-Red Scanner Data For Radiometric Temperature Analysis Of Thermal Plumes, D. Langner, J. Michael, D. Wright Jan 1975

Digital Processing Of Infra-Red Scanner Data For Radiometric Temperature Analysis Of Thermal Plumes, D. Langner, J. Michael, D. Wright

LARS Symposia

A method for digitally reducing thermal plume data obtained from a Bendix Thermal Mapper is presented. This method includes a distortion removal technique and the calculation of apparent blackbody temperature from the scanner's output film. This method is illustrated using data obtained with a Bendix scanner over the Surry Station nuclear power generating facility located on the James River in Surry, Virginia.

Exploiting The Temporal Coherence Of Repetitive Satellite Imagery, William E. Evans Jan 1975

Exploiting The Temporal Coherence Of Repetitive Satellite Imagery, William E. Evans

LARS Symposia

Imagery from ERTS or the Synchronous Meteorological Satellites, because of its precisely repetitive nature, is ideally suited both for subjective enhancement via time-lapse display and for objective measurements of changes with time. The SRI ESIAC, a hybrid system providing both viewing and image processing functions, is described. A representative application involves the measurement of changes in aerial extent of snow cover within specified mountain watersheds.

Subjective viewing of time-lapse sequences of the snow scenes provides valuable insight into the nature of numerous extraneous signals, permitting the interim implementation of operationally useful snow measuring systems while hopefully leading toward the design …

Resolution Enhancement Of Erts Imagery, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer, G. Mobasseri Jan 1975

Resolution Enhancement Of Erts Imagery, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer, G. Mobasseri

LARS Technical Reports

A method is described for combined interpolation and enhancement of ERTS multispectral scanner data sets. Previous research has shown that good enhancement is not easily achieved when there are a large number of data points contained within the radius of gyration of the system point spread function. This requirement can be met using ERTS data by interpolating the data before enhancement. By varying the interpolation scale factor the data set can be empirically matched to a precalculated optimum restoration filter. Once the proper match of data and filter has been found the enhancement can be carried out directly or the …
