Taking Professional Development From 2d To 3d: Design-Based Learning, 2d Modeling, And 3d Fabrication For Authentic Standards-Aligned Lesson Plans, Darran R. Cairns, Reagan Curtis, Konstantinos A. Sierros, Johnna J. Bolyard

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

There is currently significant interest in 3D fabrication in middle school classrooms. At its best 3D printing can be utilized in authentic design projects that integrate math, science, and technology, which facilitate deep learning by students. In essence, students are able to tinker in a virtual world using 3D design software and then tinker in the real world using printed parts. We describe a professional development activity we designed to enable middle school teachers who had taken part in a three-year Math Science Partnership program to authentically integrate 3D printing into design-based lessons. We include some examples of successful design-based …

Aquatic Ecosystems In A Shifting Indiana Climate: A Report From The Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment, Tomas Höök, Carolyn Foley, Paris Collingsworth, Leslie Dorworth, Brant Fisher, Jason Hoverman Dr., Elizabeth Larue, Mark Pyron, Jennifer Tank, Melissa Widhalm, Jeffrey Dukes

Aquatic Ecosystems Reports

Indiana is home to many types of aquatic ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and temporary (ephemeral) pools, which provide habitats for a wide range of plants and animals. These ecosystems will experience changes in water quantity, water temperature, ice cover, water clarity and oxygen content as the state’s temperature and rainfall patterns shift. The plants and animals living in these aquatic ecosystems will undergo changes that will vary based on the species and the specific places they inhabit.

It is challenging to know precisely how organisms will respond to changes in climate. Effects on one species create a difficult-to-predict …

Fading Memories: Archiving And Annotating Underground Vhs Tapes In Breaking Culture, Saad Mukhtar

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This project examines the oral history of the original dance style of Hip Hop, breaking. Breaking is performed to music in sequences of movement while standing, on the floor, and in the air. There is minimal quantitative or qualitative data about the practitioners and scholars in its culture. Most of the information regarding its history is spoken orally or locked away in Video Home System (VHS) tapes. This impacts future generations who want to learn the culture and dance because primary resources are limited and fragmented on the Internet. A hundred VHS tapes, encoded in analog frequency modulation (FM) on …

A Sturdy Glass Ceiling: Representation Of Women On Screen And Behind The Scenes Of Hollywood’S Top 100 Films Throughout The Years, Kara R. Miller

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

My research analyzed the representation of women in the film industry, both on screen and behind the scenes. Specifically, I compared the number of women on and off screen for the top 100 films of 2017 (as of September) to the data collected by Martha Lauzen for the top 100 films of 1980,1990, 2000, 2010, and 2015. This comparison graphically depicts the representation of women in film over the years. The positions analyzed were producers, executive producers, directors, cinematographers, writers, and editors.

In addition to researching representation in these roles, I examined what factors, if any, are more likely to …

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger Sep 2018

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This study seeks to better understand how school administrators approach and discuss issues of race and racism in K–12 schools. Police shootings, the 2016 election, and riots across America have put race at the center of conversations, but many school administrators avoid discussing these issues in professional settings to avoid tension. Existing school leaders were surveyed to determine their attitudes and perceptions of racial dialogue. Findings indicate that school leaders report being willing and comfortable in discussing race. However, administrators also reported that they avoid these discussions unless prompted. Implications from this work suggest a need to better prepare school …

Food For Thought: Restaurants And Place Making, Tania Chakraborty Sep 2018

Food For Thought: Restaurants And Place Making, Tania Chakraborty

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

A bare geographic space is like a brand-new home that hasn’t been lived in yet. As people begin to inhabit these spaces, they build into it to make it representative of themselves, much like we design and set up our houses to turn them into homes. This is how a place goes from just being a location to something that has a deeper meaning to its inhabitants. We look to create into the spaces we inhabit our own little corner of what is familiar to us, so that we can call a space our own. This is the essence of …

From The "Other" To The "Master Narrative": The Chinese Journey Of The Frankfurt School, Guohua Zhu, Xiangchun Meng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, "From the 'Other' to the 'Master Narrative': The Chinese Journey of the Frankfurt School," Guohua Zhu and Xiangchun Meng discuss the Chinese reception of Frankfurt School and the Maoist historical context. Chinese scholars take the narrow view of the Frankfurt School theories as a depoliticized instrument to explain Chinese practice, particularly in the realm of mass culture. Furthermore, the Frankfurt School has encountered the powerful political and ideological legacy of Maoism, which not only dictates instrumentalist view, but also predisposes to a nationalistic attitude that pits Chinese exceptionalism against universalism, including the Frankfurt School and other western …

The Political (Un)Conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Xiaohong Zhang Sep 2018

The Political (Un)Conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Xiaohong Zhang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "The Political (Un)conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics from a Cross-Cultural Perspective," Xiaohong Zhang adopts a cross-cultural perspective, examining the cultural-specific nuances of critical terms like race, class and gender, all of which have bearings on our perception and conception of aesthetics. Drawing on Emory Elliot's groundbreaking book, Aesthetics in a Multicultural Age (2002), the paper probes into the aesthetic experience whose primary effect is to depragmatize. Along this line of thinking, the author draws attention to the aesthetic impetus of two Nobel laureates, Mo Yan and Gao Xingjian, whose rewriting of Western classics demonstrates Chinese authors' shared predilection for …

The integration of STEM with the Arts, commonly referred to as STEAM, recognizes the need for human skill, creativity, and imagination in technological innovations and solutions of real-world technical problems. The STEAM paradigm changes the dominant “chalk and talk” lecture and “closed-ended” problem-solving orientation of traditional engineering pedagogy to a hands-on, studio-based, and open-ended creative learning approach, typical in art education. A growing body of literature has provided evidence of the favorable impact of situating STEAM in K-16 education. The long-term objective of this work is to promote creativity in engineering students by integrating learning methods and environments from the …
