Student Papers in Public Policy
Over the past few decades technology has advanced significantly to better meet the needs of people who use them. The very first computer required a whole room and a significant amount of electrical power to make it work. The layperson now has access to technology that is more advanced than the onboard computer of the Mars rover and it is only the size of their hand. We have the capabilities to engineer components at the scale of a nanometer and they can contribute to more advances in technology. The applications of nanotechnology are vast, but one of the areas in …

On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl
On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl
Central European Studies
On Many Routes is about the history of human migration. With a focus on the Habsburg Empire, this innovative work presents an integrated and creative study of spatial mobilities: from short to long term, and intranational and inter-European to transatlantic. Migration was not just relegated to city folk, but likewise was the reality for rural dwellers, and we gain a better understanding of how sending and receiving states and shipping companies worked together to regulate migration and shape populations.
Bringing historical census data, governmental statistics, and ship manifests into conversation with centuries-old migration patterns of servants, agricultural workers, seasonal laborers, …
Low Frequency Absorption Enhancement By Modification Of Poro-Elastic Layered Sound Package, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton
Low Frequency Absorption Enhancement By Modification Of Poro-Elastic Layered Sound Package, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
For many years, industries have been searching for effective noise control solutions having cost effective features such as light weight and small volume. Conventional porous acoustical materials such as polymeric fibers, glass fibers and polyurethane foams fall into the category that meet most of these needs, but it is often said that these materials cannot provide effective absorption at low frequencies. Metamaterials or metasurfaces, on the other hand, have become popular recently due to their potential for nearly-perfect low frequency absorption performance. However, these materials still show obvious limitations regarding their implementation in industry due to their weight, volume, manufacturability …

Remotely Accessible Laboratory For Teaching And Research On Solar Thermal Collectors, Bill Hutzel, W. Travis Horton, Mark Zimpfer
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper discusses a new test platform for evaluating the performance of solar thermal collectors that was recently designed and constructed on the roof of the Applied Energy Laboratory at Purdue University, located at 40.4 °N and 86.9 °W. The test platform is mainly used for teaching undergraduate students about applications of thermodynamics and renewable energy, but it can also be used for comparative evaluations of solar thermal collector designs according to an established test standard. The entire system is monitored and controlled by a web-based Building Automation System that automatically tracks and trends both weather data and the performance …

#Eggs: Social And Online Media-Derived Perceptions Of Egg-Laying Hen Housing, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir, Christopher Wolf, John Lai, Yangxuan Liu
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Enormous quantities of data are generated through social and online media in the era of Web 2.0. Understanding consumer perceptions or demand efficiently and cost effectively remains a focus for economists, retailer/consumer sciences, and production industries. Most of the efforts to understand demand for food products rely on reports of past market performance along with survey data. Given the movement of content-generation online to lay users via social media, the potential to capture market-influencing shifts in sentiment exists in online data. This analysis presents a novel approach to studying consumer perceptions of production system attributes using eggs and laying hen …

Reflections On Service With Ace Campus Food Pantry, Marly Beck
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
In 2018, the HOPE Lab reported that 36% of four-year university students were food insecure at least once in the previous month. This has been associated with a shifting U.S. undergraduate population and the rise in associated costs of college. The consequences of hunger can manifest negatively through a student’s performance inside the classroom; it is also associated with student anxiety and depression. At Purdue, the primary resource for individuals experiencing food insecurity is the ACE Campus Food Pantry, which serves faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students. A group of student leaders direct the pantry with advising from the Center …

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Service-learning is an important component of a college education as it helps students demonstrate a positive impact on their community using their classroom knowledge. Through business writing, a Purdue English course, we were able to learn about how to market effectively to a college audience and were able to implement these learnings in our partnership with Code for Nepal. Code for Nepal is an organization that works to improve the digital literacy of women and other minority groups within Nepal. Their most impactful work was creating a document encompassing key information regarding food, water, and shelter after the 2015 earthquake. …

The Big Deal Is Dead! Long Live The Big Deal!, James A. Galbraith, Stephanie P. Hess
The Big Deal Is Dead! Long Live The Big Deal!, James A. Galbraith, Stephanie P. Hess
Charleston Library Conference
In many countries, the proclamation “The King is dead, long live the King” heralds the demise of the old monarch and the accession of a new one. This tradition ensures that the throne never remains empty while facilitating a smooth transition of power.
When the “Big Deal” journal subscription model debuted in 1996, few suspected the extent to which academic libraries would come to rely upon it, or that it would become the primary channel by which academic libraries procure academic journal content.
As budget cuts take their toll on libraries, the demise of the Big Deal model seems inevitable …

Introducing Seamlessaccess.Org: Delivering A Simpler, Privacy-Preserving Access Experience, John W. Felts, Tim Lloyd, Emily Singley
Charleston Library Conference
Managing access to subscribed services in an era of abundance is a major challenge for libraries. Users have come to expect a seamless, personalized experience on their mobile devices, but traditional approaches to access management force librarians to choose between the anonymous ease of onsite IP authentication or the access friction experienced by users authenticating across multiple resources with Single Sign-On. Building on the work of the RA21 initiative, a recent NISO Recommended Practice on Improved Access to Institutionally Provided Information Resources charts a way forward. It will enable libraries to provide seamless, privacy-preserving and one-click access to its subscribed …

Charleston Library Conference
At the 2019 Charleston Library Conference, five facilitators from a diversity of organizations led a pre-conference called Hacking for Good. The goal of the half-day pre-conference was to introduce participants to the “hacking mindset” beyond the traditionally understood technology-driven terminology. In this context, hacking refersred to an approach of identifying a challenge or set of challenges in their respective knowledge organizations and gathering a set of techniques or approaches to address and overcome those challenges. The pre-conference provided a highly interactive and supportive environment to consider all aspects of a workplace challenge related to workflows and personnel and determine the …

Libraries, consortia, and publishers are exploring new models to support Open Access (OA) content. Native OA journal publishers are facing a different set of challenges as there is no existing library subscription base to transform into support for OA. Author-pays OA models are challenging to the ecosystem for a variety of reasons. Large institutions with heavy scholarly output may pay more, small institutions that use the content but publish less are wondering what role they will play, and authors from the global south may not have funding to pay Article Processing Charges (APCs). What new models are under exploration to …
