Workzone Lighting And Glare On Nighttime Construction And Maintenance Activities, Abdullah Jalal Nafakh, Franklin Vargas Davila, Yunchang Zhang, Jon D. Fricker, Dulcy M. Abraham
JTRP Technical Reports
Over the last two decades, an increasing number of highway construction and maintenance projects in the United States have been completed at night to avoid or alleviate traffic congestion delays. Working at night entails several advantages, including lower traffic volumes, less impact on local businesses, cooler temperatures for equipment and material, and fewer overall crashes. Although nighttime roadway operations may minimize traffic disruptions, there are several safety concerns about passing motorists and workers in the nighttime work zone. For instance, improper lighting arrangements or excessive lighting levels at the job site could cause harmful levels of glare for the traveling …

JTRP Technical Reports
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) started deploying queue warning trucks ahead of interstate work zones to alert motorists of queued traffic. Along with visually alerting the motorists, digital alerts were integrated with navigational applications such as Apple Maps, Waze, and the in-vehicle infotainment system of Stellantis vehicles. More than 45,000 hours of alerting was provided to motorists across various interstates in Indiana over a 26-month period. This report evaluated the impact of queue warning trucks on traffic using hard braking events and traffic speeds provided by granular connected trajectory vehicle data. Evaluation of over 370 hours of queuing with …
Building The Social Capital Of The Academic Library Through Fundraising, Kathryn Dilworth
Building The Social Capital Of The Academic Library Through Fundraising, Kathryn Dilworth
Honors College Faculty Publications
The Social Capital Fundraising Model builds stronger and more meaningful connections with individuals who are in a position to give to the library, and it increases the reputation and value of the library. Finally, because so little scholarship exists on fundraising for the academic library, this piece adds to this literature. It also brings the academic library into philanthropy literature, which is an area of tremendous growth in recent years. My intent is that this chapter will serve as evidence for higher education development programs to invest more in academic library fundraising, recognising it as a viable case for giving …
Outdated Measurements Are Still Useful For Multi-Sensor Linear Control Systems With Random Communication Delays, Jia Zhang, Chih-Chun Wang
Outdated Measurements Are Still Useful For Multi-Sensor Linear Control Systems With Random Communication Delays, Jia Zhang, Chih-Chun Wang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Linear systems are a widely used model for the control tasks of modern cyber physical systems around their stationary state(s), e.g., smart grids, remote health applications, and autonomous driving systems. Specifically, each sensor first compresses its own measurement and then sends it to the controller. Due to the inevitable random communication delay, the controller needs to decide how to fuse the received information to compute the desired control action. Suppose a fusion center has received several measurements over time. One common belief is that the control decision should be made solely based on the latest measurement of each sensor while …

Reflecting On Recurring Failures In Iot Development, Dharun Anandayuvaraj, James C. Davis
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
As IoT systems are given more responsibility and autonomy, they offer greater benefits, but also carry greater risks. We believe this trend invigorates an old challenge of software engineering: how to develop high-risk software-intensive systems safely and securely under market pressures? As a first step, we conducted a systematic analysis of recent IoT failures to identify engineering challenges. We collected and analyzed 22 news reports and studied the sources, impacts, and repair strategies of failures in IoT systems. We observed failure trends both within and across application domains. We also observed that failure themes have persisted over time. To alleviate …
The Bilingual Code-Switching Profile (Bcsp): Assessing The Reliability And Validity Of The Bcsp Questionnaire, Daniel J. Olson
The Bilingual Code-Switching Profile (Bcsp): Assessing The Reliability And Validity Of The Bcsp Questionnaire, Daniel J. Olson
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
Significant variation exists in bilinguals’ experiences with code-switching, from dense code-switching in multiple interactional contexts to minimal switching. Although recent research has demonstrated that a bilingual’s experience with code-switching is a crucial factor for determining both linguistic and cognitive behaviors, there currently is no commonly accepted method of measuring of a bilingual’s code-switching practices. Responding to this need, this paper presents a new tool to assess a bilingual’s experience and engagement with code-switching — the Bilingual Code-Switching Profile (BCSP) — and assesses its validity and reliability. The BCSP incorporates a multifaceted conceptualization of code-switching experience, drawing on previous research in …

A Figure Of Merit To Characterize The Efficacy Of Evaporation From Porous Microstructured Surfaces, M. Bongarala, H. Hu, J.A. Weibel, S.V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Evaporation from porous structured surfaces is encountered in a variety of applications including electronics cooling, desalination, and solar energy generation. Of major interest in the design of thermal systems for such applications is a prediction of the heat and mass transfer rates during evaporation from these surfaces. The present study develops a figure of merit (FOM) that characterizes the efficacy of evaporative heat transfer from microstructured surfaces. Geometric quantities such as the contact line length per unit area, porosity, and contact angle that are independent of details of the surface structure are utilized to develop the FOM, allowing for flexibility …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper systematizes knowledge about secure software supply chain patterns. It identifies four stages of a software supply chain attack and proposes three security properties crucial for a secured supply chain: transparency, validity, and separation. The paper describes current security approaches and maps them to the proposed security properties, including research ideas and case studies of supply chains in practice. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches relative to known attacks and details the various security frameworks put out to ensure the security of the software supply chain. Finally, the paper highlights potential gaps in actor and operation-centered …
Exploiting Input Sanitization For Regex Denial Of Service, Efe Barlas, Xin Du, James C. Davis
Exploiting Input Sanitization For Regex Denial Of Service, Efe Barlas, Xin Du, James C. Davis
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Web services use server-side input sanitization to guard against harmful input. Some web services publish their sanitization logic to make their client interface more usable, e.g., allowing clients to debug invalid requests locally. However, this usability practice poses a security risk. Specifically, services may share the regexes they use to sanitize input strings — and regex-based denial of service (ReDoS) is an emerging threat. Although prominent service outages caused by ReDoS have spurred interest in this topic, we know little about the degree to which live web services are vulnerable to ReDoS.
In this paper, we conduct the first black-box …

An Empirical Study On The Impact Of Deep Parameters On Mobile App Energy Usage, Qiang Xu, James C. Davis, Y Charlie Hu, Abhilash Jindal
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Improving software performance through configuration parameter tuning is a common activity during software maintenance. Beyond traditional performance metrics like latency, mobile app developers are interested in reducing app energy usage. Some mobile apps have centralized locations for parameter tuning, similar to databases and operating systems, but it is common for mobile apps to have hundreds of parameters scattered around the source code. The correlation between these "deep" parameters and app energy usage is unclear. Researchers have studied the energy effects of deep parameters in specific modules, but we lack a systematic understanding of the energy impact of mobile deep parameters. …

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster
Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials
Information literacy is essential for business students as they prepare for the workplace they will enter after leaving the university. Prior to graduation, students must also prepare for the information needs they will experience during internships and co-ops. To optimize instruction and teach students the information literacy skills they will need on-the-job, librarians need to understand what information sources employers require students to use during internship/co-op experiences and in what ways. In this study we surveyed business students and alumni at a large Midwestern university who had completed an internship or co-op regarding their information use during these workplace experiences.

New Nusselt Number Correlations For Developing And Fully Developed Laminar Flows In Concentric Circular Annular Ducts, Kamran Hirbodi, Mahmood Yaghoubi, David M. Warsinger
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Concentric circular annular ducts are common and important elements in fluid flow and heat transfer equipment, including chemical mixing devices and heat exchangers. There are many problems involving heat transfer in concentric annuli which require accurate heat transfer coefficients for laminar and turbulent flows. This study proposes new correlations for the local and average Nusselt numbers in hydrodynamically fully developed and thermally developing or fully developed regions of laminar flows. The correlations are developed based on the results of available series solutions for four fundamental boundary conditions. The correlations use exponential and power law functions of dimensionless axial and radial …

Meet The Tutors: Student Expectations, Tutor Perspectives, And Some Recommendations For Sharing Information About Tutors Online, Jessica Robbins, Jaclyn M. Wells
The Writing Center Journal
This article presents findings from an IRB-approved study about tutors’ online information on writing center websites, scheduling systems, and social media. The study used surveys to investigate students’ responses to tutors’ online information and focus groups to investigate tutors’ rationale for the information they shared. While many researchers have studied how writing centers are presented online, little research considers how tutors are represented. The authors argue that such representation merits attention, as tutor profiles can affect students’ comfort with the writing center staff and their microdecisions about who to see and how to interact with them (Salem, 2016). The authors …
