Acreage Estimation, Feature Selection, And Signature Extension Dependent Upon The Maximum Likelihood Decision Rule, John A. Quirein, M. C. Trichel
LARS Symposia
The maximum likelihood decision rule and estimation of the resulting m-class probability of misclassification are discussed. A bound on the variance of a proposed unbiased estimator of the m-class probability of error is derived. The problem of estimating the a priori probabilities for two classes is covered. When the estimator is counting the proportion of classified samples assigned to each class, a bound on the error of the estimate is derived. The problem of m-class feature selection using the Bhattacharyya distance is also addressed. The particular case in which each class density is assumed to be a mixture of multivariate …

Geometric Analysis And Restitution Of Digital Multispectral Scanner Data Arrays, James R. Baker, Edward M. Mikhail
LARS Technical Reports
This thesis contains the results of an investigation performed in order to define causes of geometric defects within digital multispectral scanner (MSS) data arrays, to analyze the nature of the resulting geometric errors, and to investigate restitution methods to correct or reduce such geometric errors.
The thesis includes a review of digital multispectral scanning systems, including the recording and digital form for computer aided analysis. Causes of geometric errors within the data arrays are presented, and previous investigations of geometric aspects of remote sensing systems are reviewed.
The introduction of geometric transformation relationships for scanned data, from which collinearity equations …
Exploiting The Temporal Coherence Of Repetitive Satellite Imagery, William E. Evans
Exploiting The Temporal Coherence Of Repetitive Satellite Imagery, William E. Evans
LARS Symposia
Imagery from ERTS or the Synchronous Meteorological Satellites, because of its precisely repetitive nature, is ideally suited both for subjective enhancement via time-lapse display and for objective measurements of changes with time. The SRI ESIAC, a hybrid system providing both viewing and image processing functions, is described. A representative application involves the measurement of changes in aerial extent of snow cover within specified mountain watersheds.
Subjective viewing of time-lapse sequences of the snow scenes provides valuable insight into the nature of numerous extraneous signals, permitting the interim implementation of operationally useful snow measuring systems while hopefully leading toward the design …
Classification Of Multispectral Image Data By Extraction And Classification Of Homogeneous Objects, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe
Classification Of Multispectral Image Data By Extraction And Classification Of Homogeneous Objects, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe
LARS Symposia
A method of classification of digitized multispectral image data is described. It is designed to exploit a particular type of dependence between adjacent states of nature that is characteristic of the data. The advantages of this, as opposed to the conventional "per point" approach, are greater accuracy and efficiency, and the results are in a more desirable form. Experimental results from both aircraft and satellite data are included.
Recursive Estimation Of Proportions In Earth Observations, Demetrios Kazakos
Recursive Estimation Of Proportions In Earth Observations, Demetrios Kazakos
LARS Symposia
In Earth observations problems, we usually have the situation of knowing accurately the probability density functions of the several classes of interest, and we need to classify a set of observations with unknown class proportions.
The observations are in n-dimensional space, where n is the number of spectral bands.
Two recursive algorithms for classifying the observations and estimating the prior probabilities are described. The first one achieves simultaneous classification of pixels and estimation of prior probabilities (or proportions) and the second one estimates the proportions in a recursive fashion.
There is a similarity of the second approach to maximum likelihood …

The Image Display And Manipulation System (Idams), William L. Alford
LARS Symposia
The Image Display and Manipulation System (IDAMS) is an interactive image analysis system consisting of a general purpose computer, a TV display and control console, and software. This paper describes the system features and capabilities. A scenario approach which simplifies the user interface is defined and is illustrated by an application of a scenario to multispectral classification. Included is a brief description of the Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS), a new interactive image analysis system currently being implemented at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Interactive Image Processing For Meteorological Applications At Nasa/Goddard Space Flight Center, James B. Billingsley, Frederick A. Hasler
LARS Symposia
Interactive image data processing has greatly improved the capability to extract scientific information from satellite image data. Previous methods of batch processing did not allow the scientist to interpret intermediate results on a short enough time scale to effectively modify either the data or processes as required for efficient data extraction.
A primary Goddard Space Flight Center meteorological program objective is to develop methods to improve detection and prediction of severe storms using geostationary satellite measurements. Interactive data processing systems can perform many tasks towards meeting this objective.
The development of interactive image processing techniques which have led to meteorological …
Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns
Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns
LARS Symposia
The results of observing the radiation from lightning discharge processes by William L. Taylor has indicated that radio frequency electrical activity was associated with the tornado producing severe storms that struck Oklahoma City during April, 1970. This paper reports our findings as the result of analyzing Taylor's' atmospherics rate data employing the techniques of time series analysis and pattern recognition. It shows the promise that sferics rate data can be used to establish unique signatures for the task of forecasting various severe weather patterns, however an extensive analysis of more data is needed before affirmative conclusions can be drawn.
