Arizona Geophysical Data Base, Ronald G. Mcleod Jan 1981

Arizona Geophysical Data Base, Ronald G. Mcleod

LARS Symposia

A series of digital data sets were compiled for input into a geophysical data base for a one degree quadrangle in Arizona. Using a Landsat digital mosaic as a base, information on topography, geology, gravity as well as Seasat radar imagery were registered. Example overlays and tabulations are performed.

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank Jan 1981

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank

LARS Symposia

A need for geo-referenced data within the scientific community has led to the development of comprehensive geographic information systems. Such comprehensive systems are characterized by three fundamental attributes. They possess a data organization which is indexed by using a geographic locator. They have the capability to manipulate and analyze the data base by displaying raw data, to aggregate raw data into classes, to tabulate the distribution of data within a class, and to perform arbitrary arithmetic operations on the data. They also possess the capability to prepare graphical displays of the data in the form of maps. Now that remote …

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller Jan 1981

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller

LARS Symposia

Protection and effective management of wetlands requires information describing their type, distribution, and condition. Inventories are carried out to obtain such information. The efficiency of inventories that produce statistical information can be improved by the use of remote sensing because the synoptic observation capabilities of remote sensors, particularly Landsat, make it possible to nearly eliminate sampling error. The information furnished by inventories designed to produce maps can be extended through the use of digital data manipulation techniques to include (1) quantitative measures of the spatial arrangement of a resource and (2) detection of changes in a resource over time.

Data Structuration In Coal Research And Coal Mining, Marie-Jose Roulet Jan 1981

Data Structuration In Coal Research And Coal Mining, Marie-Jose Roulet

LARS Symposia

This presentation of data structuration in coal research and coal mining is considered as the first step in the setting up of an operational data bank.

This structuration, according to the HBDS model, seems interesting to take into account many qualitative or/and quantitative data and to manage their relations. This application to drilling data deals with scientific and technical purposes, in coal mine.

Parallel Processing Implementations Of A Contextual Classifier For Multispectral Remote Sensing Data, Howard J. Siegel, Philip H. Swain, Bradley W. Smith Jan 1980

Parallel Processing Implementations Of A Contextual Classifier For Multispectral Remote Sensing Data, Howard J. Siegel, Philip H. Swain, Bradley W. Smith

LARS Technical Reports

Contextual classifiers are being developed as a method to exploit the spatial/spectral context of a pixel to achieve accurate classification. Classification algorithms such as the contextual classifier typically require large amounts of computation time. One way to reduce the execution time of these tasks is through the use of parallelism. The applicability of the CDC Flexible Processor system and of a proposed multimicroprocessor system (PASM) for implementing contextual classifiers is examined.

Description Of A User-Oriented Geographic Information System: The Resource Analysis Program, Stephen E. Tilmann, Delbert L. Mokma

LARS Symposia

This paper describes the Resource Analysis Program, an applied geographic information system. Several applications are presented which utilized soil, and other natural resource data, to develop integrated maps and data analyses. These applications demonstrate the methods of analysis and the philosophy of approach used in the mapping system.

The applications are evaluated in reference to four major needs of a functional mapping system: data capture, data libraries, data analysis, and mapping and data display. These four criteria are then used to describe an effort to develop the next generation of applied mapping systems. This approach uses inexpensive microcomputers for field …

A Model Of Plant Canopy Polarization Response, V. C. Vanderbilt Jan 1980

A Model Of Plant Canopy Polarization Response, V. C. Vanderbilt

LARS Symposia

Sensors to remotely measure the linear polarization of ground scenes have been proposed for the Multispectral Resource Sampler (MRS), a satellite sensor system proposed to compliment the Thematic Mapper. At present justification for a sensor on MRS to measure scene polarization is limited. This paper discusses a model for the amount of linearly polarized light reflected by the shiny leaves of such crops as wheat, corn, and sorghum. The theory demonstrates that, potentially, measurements of the linearly polarized light from a crop canopy may be used as an additional feature to discriminate between crops. Examination of the model suggests that, …

Dynamic Intraesophageal Imaging Of The Heart With Ultrasound, N. E. Fearnot, Charles F. Babbs, J. D. Bourland, L. A. Geddes Jan 1980

Dynamic Intraesophageal Imaging Of The Heart With Ultrasound, N. E. Fearnot, Charles F. Babbs, J. D. Bourland, L. A. Geddes

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Real-time images of the heart from within the esophagus are produced by a new intraesophageal ultrasonic sector scanner. Sixty images per second are displayed on a gray scale CRT in real-time and recorded on standard videotape for review. By interactive positioning of the esophageal probe, heart ventricles, atria, and valves can be visualized and their dynamics can be studied. The esophageal probe comprises four 5 MHz PZT-5 piezoelements of 6.35 mm diameter, mounted on a shaft that rotates at 900 rpm. The piezoelements are pulsed at a 5 kHz rate and the echoes are processed electronically.

Inventory Estimation On The Massively Parallel Processor, Peter D. Argentiero, James P. Strong, David W. Koch Jan 1980

Inventory Estimation On The Massively Parallel Processor, Peter D. Argentiero, James P. Strong, David W. Koch

LARS Symposia

This paper describes algorithms for efficiently computing inventory estimates from satellite based images. The algorithms incorporate a one dimensional feature extraction which optimizes the pairwise sum of Fisher distances. Biases are eliminated with a premultiplication by the inverse of the analytically derived error matrix. The technique is demonstrated with a numerical example using statistics obtained from an actual LANDSAT scene.

Attention was given to implementation of the Massively Parallel processor (MPP). A timing analysis demonstrates that the inventory estimation can be performed an order of magnitude faster on the MPP than on a conventional serial machine.
