Can Barriers To Trade Make A Differential?, Jon D. Haveman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Within the purview of economics, there are a number of phenomena that remain unexplained. One such phenomenon is the existence of inter-industry wage differentials; differences in wages paid to observationally equivalent workers. This paper investigates the link between the degree of international competition in an industry and the premium paid to workers in that industry. The rationale for this connection lies in the hypothesis that the source of the observed wage premium arises from the sharing of rents with workers in profitable industries. International competition serves to reduce the market power of firms in the industry reducing the existence of …

Impact Of Data-Reuse And Multiple Data-Copies In A Heterogeneous Computing System With Sequentially Executed Subtasks , Min Tan, John K. Antonio, Howard Jay Siegel, Yan Alexander Li

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In a heterogeneous computing (HC) environment, an application program is decomposed into subtasks, then each computationally homogeneous subtask is assigned to the machine where it is best suited for execution. It is assumed that, at any instant in time during the execution of a specific application program, only one machine is being used for program execution and only one subtask is being executed. A mathematical model is presented for three of the factors that affect the execution time of an application program in an HC system: matching, scheduling, and data relocation schemes. Two data relocation situations are identified, namely data-reuse …

The plenipotentiaries of the warring nations met in the Dutch town of Utrecht in 1712 to begin peace negotiations that would end the war of the Spanish Succession. The French had contacted England many years prior to this date in hopes of moving along an end to the war. The Abbe Francois Gaultier was their principle agent in the many secret negotiations that preceded the final negotiations at Utrecht.

A Decision Support System For Real-Time Snow And Ice Control, Hjalmar James Miedema, J. R. Wright Jan 1995

A Decision Support System For Real-Time Snow And Ice Control, Hjalmar James Miedema, J. R. Wright

JTRP Technical Reports

Effective real-time snow and ice control operations require a timely initial call-out. A timely initial call-out is one that mobilizes the workforce slightly prior to the onset of hazardous road conditions. In order to estimate the onset of hazardous road conditions, the snow and ice control decision makers use available physical and meteorological information. New technologies are developed that could provide better information, thereby improving the ability to make timely initial call-outs. A systematic methodology for evaluating the benefit of additional information used in snow and ice control initiation is presented. The purposed methodology compares reduction in the direct and …

Recognition And Localization Of A Flat Symmetric Object From A Single Perspective Image, Andoo P. Yang, David M. Chelberg Dec 1994

Recognition And Localization Of A Flat Symmetric Object From A Single Perspective Image, Andoo P. Yang, David M. Chelberg

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A flat symmetric object viewed under perspective (orthographic) projectiorl yields a convergent (skew) symmetry. Unlike skew symmetry where the axes constrain the orientation of the underlying object to lie on a hyperbola in the gradient space, for convergent symmetry the object orientation can be uniquely determined from the axis and convergent point except for some special cases. However, detection of the axis and convergent point of a convergent symmetry has not yet received much attention. We present a technique which can detect the axis and convergent point of a convergent symmetric contmour in an image using distinguished points such as …

Heterogeneous Computing, Howard Jay Siegel, John K. Antonio, Richard C. Metzger, Min Tan, Yan Alexander Li Dec 1994

Heterogeneous Computing, Howard Jay Siegel, John K. Antonio, Richard C. Metzger, Min Tan, Yan Alexander Li

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A heterogeneous computing (HC) system provides a variety of architectural capabilities, orchestrated to perform an application whose subtasks have diverse execution requirements. One type of heterogeneous computing system is a mixed-mode machine, where a single machine can operate in different modes of parallelism. Another is a mixed-machine system, where a suite of different kinds of high-performance machines are interconnected by high-:speed links. To exploit such systems, a task must be decomposed into subtasks, where each subtask is computationally homogeneous. The subtasks are then assigned to and executed with the machines (or modes) that will result in a minimal overall execution …

Data Parallel Algorithms, Howard Jay Siege1, Lee Wang, John John E. So, Muthucumaru Maheswaran Dec 1994

Data Parallel Algorithms, Howard Jay Siege1, Lee Wang, John John E. So, Muthucumaru Maheswaran

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Data parallelism is a model of parallel computing in which the same set of instructions is applied to all the elements in a data set. A sampling of data parallel algorithms is presented. The examples are certainly not exhaustive, but address many issues involved in designing data parallel algorithms. Case studies are used to illustrate some algorithm design techniques; and to highlight some implementation decisions that influence the overall performance of a parallel algorithm. It is shown that the characteristics of a particular parallel machine to be used need to be considered in transforming a given task into a parallel …

An Overview Of Flexible Ac Transmission Systems, P. Asare, T. Diez, A. Galli, E. O'Neill-Carillo, J. Robertson, R. Zhao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

FACTS or "flexible AC transmission systems" is a term that has been suggested for the use of solid state devices to control bulk power flow in transmission systems. The Electric Power Research Institute supported this idea, and many researchers have invested efforts on the value and potential of FACTS. At this time, it appears that the main value of FACTS lies in improving transmission capability; increasing the flexibility of power flow control (e.g., for wheeling or for economic dispatch); for controlling voltage (and var flow); and possibly additional advantages in lower voltage systems (e.g., distribution systems). This report is an …

Development Of A Highway Safety Management System For Indiana: Phase 1, Omar Farooq, Kumares C. Sinha, John Nagle, Dwayne Stanley James, Yi Jiang

JTRP Technical Reports

This report presents the work plan for the development of a highway safety management system for Indiana. It identifies major activities and responsibilities for the development and implementation of a formal, statewide, interactive safety decision-making process. The safety management system of Indiana is perceived as a continuous process of considering all opportunities to improve highway safety in all phases of highway planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation. The primary emphasis is on coordination of activities at various levels and on the development of a common information data base that can be used for selecting and implementing effective highway safety strategies …

Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz Nov 1994

Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Coded modulation (usually with interleaving) is used in fading channel cornmunications to achieve good error performance. The major benefit froin using coded modulation in fading channels is achieved if each code symbol of a codeword (or coded sequence) suffers statistically different fading (preferably independent fading). However, in many applications of mobile communications (e.g. in a metropolitan environment), a low vehicle speed (and hence a small Doppler spread) is very common. With a small Doppler spread, ideal or close-to-ideal interleaving is no longer feasible and all code symbols of a codeword would suffer highly correlated fading especially in stationary fading (Doppler …

Dist A Distribution Independent Parallel Programs For Matrix Multiplication, Hyuk J. Lee, José A.B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report considers the problem of writing data distribution independent (DDI) programs in order to eliminate or reduce initial data redistribution overheads for distributed memory parallel computers. The functionality and execution time of DDI programs are independent of initial data distributions. First, modular mappings, which can be used to derive many equally optimal ant1 functionally equivalent programs, are briefly reviewed. Relations between modular mappings and input data distributions are then established. These relations are the basis of a systematic approach to the derivation of DDI programs which is illustrated for matrix-matrix multiplication(c = a x b). Conditions on data distributions …
