Oral Health And Older Adults: A Narrative Review, Martin S. Lipsky, Tejasvi Singh, Golnoush Zakeri, Man Hung

Institute on Aging Publications

Oral health’s association with general health, morbidity, and mortality in older adults highlights its importance for healthy aging. Poor oral health is not an inevitable consequence of aging, and a proactive, multidisciplinary approach to early recognition and treatment of common pathologies increases the likelihood of maintaining good oral health. Some individuals may not have regular access to a dentist, and opportunities to improve oral health may be lost if health professionals fail to appreciate the importance of oral health on overall well-being and quality of life. The authors of this narrative review examined government websites, the American Dental Association Aging …

Improved Subseasonal Prediction Of South Asian Monsoon Rainfall Using Data-Driven Forecasts Of Oscillatory Modes, Eviatar Bach, Venkat Krishnamurthy, Safa Mote, Jagadish Shukla, A. Surjalal Sharma, Eugenia Kalnay, Michael Ghil

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Predicting the temporal and spatial patterns of South Asian monsoon rainfall within a season is of critical importance due to its impact on agriculture, water availability, and flooding. The monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) is a robust northwardpropagating mode that determines the active and break phases of the monsoon and much of the regional distribution of rainfall. However, dynamical atmospheric forecast models predict this mode poorly. Data-driven methods for MISO prediction have shown more skill, but only predict the portion of the rainfall corresponding to MISO rather than the full rainfall signal. Here, we combine state-of-the-art ensemble precipitation forecasts from a …

Self-Optimizing Feature Generation Via Categorical Hashing Representation And Hierarchical Reinforcement Crossing, Wangyang Ying, Dongjie Wang, Kunpeng Liu, Leilei Sun, Yanjie Fu Feb 2024

Self-Optimizing Feature Generation Via Categorical Hashing Representation And Hierarchical Reinforcement Crossing, Wangyang Ying, Dongjie Wang, Kunpeng Liu, Leilei Sun, Yanjie Fu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Feature generation aims to generate new and meaningful features to create a discriminative representation space. A generated feature is meaningful when the generated feature is from a feature pair with inherent feature interaction. In the real world, experienced data scientists can identify potentially useful feature-feature interactions, and generate meaningful dimensions from an exponentially large search space in an optimal crossing form over an optimal generation path. But, machines have limited human-like abilities. We generalize such learning tasks as self-optimizing feature generation. Self-optimizing feature generation imposes several under-addressed challenges on existing systems: meaningful, robust, and efficient generation. To tackle these challenges, …

Pcl And Dmso2 Composites As Biomaterials For Additive Manufacturing, Jae-Won Jang

Dissertations and Theses

Tissue engineering provides a viable solution to address the shortage of organ donors for allograft transplants. Its primary objective is the replacement or regeneration of damaged tissues which is developed by combining living cells, a scaffold, and a bioreactor. Among these components, the scaffold serves as an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM), which plays a pivotal role in supporting cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and overall tissue development. Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as three-dimensional (3D) printing, emerges as a promising method for scaffold fabrication due to its capability to create complex and repeatable geometries.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been one of …

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a work of satire, in the style of the late Binyavanga Wainaina’s “How to Write About Africa” and Bright Alozie’s “How to Write About Nigeria” and “How to Write About African Women.” In this satirical homage, we explore the pesky stereotypes that often accompany Western perceptions and writings about African children. We hope that stereotypes satirically highlighted in this piece shed light on the dangers of a single story while advocating for the recognition of the humanity, agency, voices, and dignity of African children.

Thorstein Veblen And His Underlying Philosophical Influences, John B. Hall Jan 2024

Thorstein Veblen And His Underlying Philosophical Influences, John B. Hall

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This inquiry recognizes Thorstein Veblen first and foremost as a philosopher who advanced a literature in Social Sciences, generally, and Economic Science, in particular. Veblen’s thinking and writing were supported by rich traditions drawn from notable philosophers that included among several: Charles Sanders Peirce, Immanuel Kant, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Relying upon his strong background in Philosophy, he then sought to challenge mainstream, neoclassical economics, especially. As his career developed, he would turn his talents and energies towards advancing ideas that would ultimately prove foundational for heterodox economics and, relatedly, American Institutionalism.

Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1928, the Institute for Government Research released the Meriam Report, a massive study of the nation’s Native Americans. Unflinchingly rational, the report criticized federal policy, but it also set a high-minded vision for Native American progress. Celebrated by the press at the time, hailed by historians in the following decades (Bertolet, 2007; Kelly, 1983, Philp, 1977, Szasz, 1974; Downs, 1945), the report became perceived as a turning point in the treatment of Native Americans and signaled a renewed faith in government. A century later, these reforms appear as mirages. In this paper, I show how the Meriam Report cloaks …

Assessing Cool Corridor Heat Resilience Strategies For Human-Scale Transportation, Nicole Iroz-Elardo, Ladd Keith, Kristina M. Currans, Ashley Avila, Lauren Heath, Brenden J. Little, Ethan C. Wissler, Andrew J. Birkelbach

TREC Final Reports

Road pavement is a known contributor to the urban heat island effect. Several vendors are providing engineered pavements coatings—known as “cool pavement”—to reflect light and, therefore, reflect heat to reduce the thermal load of roads. Few of these cool pavements have been evaluated outside lab conditions, where they tend to rely heavily on surface temperature measurements with the assumption that lower surface temperatures result in lower ambient air temperatures in real-world practice. Further, while heat is detrimental to the pedestrian and cyclist experience and health, almost no research exists documenting the experience of the cool pavement on active travelers, including …

Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling Jan 2024

Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling

Environmental Science and Management Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses

Marine heatwaves, altered precipitation regimes, and other changing climate conditions are altering the abiotic conditions of Oregon's estuaries. Furthermore, warmer water temperatures are correlated with the range expansion and population growth of the invasive and broadly tolerant Carcinus maenas, the green crab, in Oregon. Metacarcinus magister, Dungeness crab, one of Oregon’s most valuable fishery species, is also facing these climate stressors, and their young that recruit to estuaries overlap with C. maenas adults. Therefore, we wanted to determine impacts of C. maenas on young-of-the-year (YOTY) M. magister and the roles of salinity, temperature, and predator size in mediating …

The settling behavior of individual spheres in a quiescent fluid was studied experimentally. The dynamics of the spheres was analyzed in the parameter space of particle-to-fluid density ratio (Γ) and Galileo number (Ga), with Γ ∈ (1.1,7.9) and Ga ∈ (100,340). The experimental results showed for the first time that the mean trajectory angle with the vertical exhibits a complex behavior as Ga and Γ are varied. Numerically predicted regimes such as Vertical Periodic for low Γ values, and Planar Rotating for high Γ values were validated. In particular, for the denser spheres, a clear transition from planar to non-planar …

Moisture-Controlled Triboelectrification During Coffee Grinding, Joshua Méndez Harper, Yong-Hyun Kim, Robin E. Bumbaugh, Connor S. Mcdonald, Christopher H. Hendon, Elana J. Cope, Leif E. Lindberg, Justin Pham, Multiple Additional Authors

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Triboelectrification is the physical process where materials acquire surface charge from frictional interactions at their interfaces. The magnitude of charge depends on the interfacial material composition and can be harnessed in emergent technologies for energy generation.

The mechanism of electrostatic accumulation is complex and is further obscured in granular materials where collisions are sufficiently energetic to cause fracturing. In this “fractoelectric” regime, crack initiation and propagation are thought to charge particles through transfer of electrons and/or ions at the hot crack interface.

Whether a material’s charging is dominated by tribo- or fractoelectrification, fracture-generated granular flows often comprise particles whose surface charge …

Analyzing Frequency Event Detection Algorithm Performance Using Different Denoising Methods, Hussain A. Alghamdi, Midrar Adham, Robert Bass Jan 2024

Analyzing Frequency Event Detection Algorithm Performance Using Different Denoising Methods, Hussain A. Alghamdi, Midrar Adham, Robert Bass

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Maintaining grid frequency at its nominal value is crucial for power system stability and supply-demand balance. Swift and accurate detection of frequency events is vital for providing primary frequency response support. Frequency event detection algorithms often rely on Phasor Measurement Unit data, which may contain noise. Implementing a denoising preprocessing step enhances detection precision and accuracy. In previous works, a frequency event detection algorithm based on wavelet transform was developed, which uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for denoising purposes. In this paper, several denoising techniques are considered as potential replacements for the current DWT method. This research investigates and compares …

Fight, Flight, Freeze: How Access To Support Shapes Tenant Responses To Eviction In Multnomah County, Natalie J. Cholula, Lisa K. Bates, Alex Farrington, Marisa Zapata, Colleen Carroll, Jacen Greene, Hadley Bates

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Facing eviction is a traumatic event that forces tenants into a fight, flight or freeze response. Our focus groups with Multnomah County tenants reveal that their responses to eviction are directly shaped by their access to support. Many tenants are unable to access formal support and therefore respond to eviction by freezing up or fleeing their home. Conversely, tenants who can access formal support—including rental assistance or legal assistance—exhibit a fight response, leveraging external support to challenge or avoid their eviction.

A Magnetic Constant Torque Mechanism, Gozde Sivka, Dawei Che, Bert Dechant, Colton Bruce, Jonathan Z. Bird Jan 2024

A Magnetic Constant Torque Mechanism, Gozde Sivka, Dawei Che, Bert Dechant, Colton Bruce, Jonathan Z. Bird

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents the design of a new type of magnetic constant torque mechanism. The constant torque is shown to be created over a prescribed ±65° stroke length and is shown to be highly uniform. The value of the constant torque is adjustable through the relative axial motion of the rotors. The constant torque is created using a simple magnet arrangement which makes use of the axial transverse-flux path of one rotor's magnetic field relative to the azimuthal field flow of the fixed secondary rotor. It is shown that the use of segmented magnets introduces torque ripple.
