Analysis Of Turbulent Flow In Portland-Metro Urban Environment, Shaho Zana Meman Jun 2024

Analysis Of Turbulent Flow In Portland-Metro Urban Environment, Shaho Zana Meman

University Honors Theses

Air pollution is a significant issue faced by many major cities worldwide. The geometry and orientation of urban buildings greatly contribute to the dispersion of pollutants throughout cityscapes. To apply this information at a local level, this capstone project aims to analyze the velocity profiles of various areas in the Portland metro area using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). First, we created models for three types of urban geometry: urban, suburban, and rural. Then, we ran simulations using the high-fidelity numerical simulation tool Envi-Met to analyze the turbulent flow field which is believed to have a close relation to air pollutant …

Around that time his father, Donald Appleyard, started work on what would become Livable Streets, published in 1981 – a ground-breaking and seminal work, the product of more than a decade of rigorous research and thoughtful analysis that would uncover the ill effects of traffic and laying out the seminal arguments that streets are for …

Consequences Of Spatial Heterogeneity For Turbulent Wake Development, Ryan Scott May 2024

Consequences Of Spatial Heterogeneity For Turbulent Wake Development, Ryan Scott

Dissertations and Theses

Spatial heterogeneity is an fundamental property of natural systems. In fluid dynamics subtle variations in fluid motion give rise to chaotic turbulent flows. When a fluid passes an object it retains an imprint of the object as a momentum deficit known as a wake. The resulting spatial structure of the wake is intrinsically linked to the object responsible for its creation. The coupling between geometric complexity in wake producing entities and turbulent wake evolution is considered in terms of spatial heterogeneity from individual wakes through turbulent canopy flows. First a novel Lacunarity-based method is developed for quantifying spatial heterogeneity in …

Investigation Of Piezocone Dissipation Test Interpretation In Clay Accounting For Vertical And Horizontal Porewater Pressure Dissipation With A Large Deformation Axisymmetric Penetration Model, Diane Moug, Andrew Huffman, Jason T. Dejong

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The piezocone (CPTu) dissipation test is used to characterize how the applied load from the penetrating cone is distributed between the soil and pore fluid during both penetrometer advancement and when penetration is paused. The coefficient of consolidation is often estimated from CPTu dissipation tests by interpreting the rate of excess porewater pressure (∆u) decay to static conditions during a pause in cone penetration. Most CPTu dissipation test interpretation methods are based on Terzaghi consolidation theory for ∆u dissipation at the cone shoulder (u2 position) or cone face (u1 position) and assume that radial ∆u dissipation dominates the …
