Organizational Readiness Assessment For Fraud Detection And Prevention: Case Of Airlines Sector And Electronic Payment, Sultan Ayed Alghamdi
Organizational Readiness Assessment For Fraud Detection And Prevention: Case Of Airlines Sector And Electronic Payment, Sultan Ayed Alghamdi
Dissertations and Theses
Payment processing systems have advanced significantly in the airline business. Because e-payments are easy, they have captured the attention of many companies in the aviation industry and are quickly becoming the dominant means of payment. However, as technology advances, fraud grows at a comparable rate. Over the years, there has been a surge in payment fraud incidents in the airline sector, reducing the platform's trustworthiness. Despite attempts to eliminate e-payment fraud, decision-makers lack the technical expertise required to use the finest fraud detection and prevention assessments; this research recognizes the lack of an established decision model as a hurdle and …
Comparing The Performance Of Different Machine Learning Models In The Evaluation Of Solder Joint Fatigue Life Under Thermal Cycling, Jason Scott Ross
Comparing The Performance Of Different Machine Learning Models In The Evaluation Of Solder Joint Fatigue Life Under Thermal Cycling, Jason Scott Ross
Dissertations and Theses
Predicting the reliability of board-level solder joints is a challenging process for the designer because the fatigue life of solder is influenced by a large variety of design parameters and many nonlinear, coupled phenomena. Machine learning has shown promise as a way of predicting the fatigue life of board-level solder joints. In the present work, the performance of various machine learning models to predict the fatigue life of board-level solder joints is discussed. Experimental data from many different solder joint thermal fatigue tests are used to train the different machine learning models. A web-based database for storing, sharing, and uploading …
Factors Affecting Community Rating System Participation In The National Flood Insurance Program: A Case Study Of Texas, Ryan David Eddings
Factors Affecting Community Rating System Participation In The National Flood Insurance Program: A Case Study Of Texas, Ryan David Eddings
Dissertations and Theses
Since the 1960s, the frequency and cost of floods have, on average, increased in the United States. Concurrent with this increase in flood losses has been an increase in flood insurance claims paid out by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The existing literature shows that participation in the NFIP's Community Rating System (CRS) program successfully lowered flood losses and NFIP insurance claims in the participating communities. In spite of these successes, community participation in the CRS is low and the NFIP is currently more than $20 billion in debt. By identifying factors predicting participation and related barriers to entry …

Environmental enrichment can be used to improve the welfare of dolphins in zoos and aquariums. Bottlenose dolphins under professional care are typically provided with a range of enrichment that has a variety of features and levels of complexity at various frequencies. In the present study, a subset of data from a larger study entitled “Towards understanding the welfare of cetaceans in zoos and aquariums” (colloquially called the Cetacean Welfare Study) was used to examine the relationship between activity level and enrichment buoyancy as well as enrichment provisioning schedules. Survey data were collected from accredited zoos and aquariums related to the …
Why So Serious? Using The Belongingness Need Tenet From The Self-Determination Theory To Examine Workplace Humor And Its Outcomes, Katharine Lucille Mcmahon
Why So Serious? Using The Belongingness Need Tenet From The Self-Determination Theory To Examine Workplace Humor And Its Outcomes, Katharine Lucille Mcmahon
Dissertations and Theses
The small body of literature for workplace humor remains fragmented due to the lack of coherence in conceptualization and theory. Furthermore, the distinction between positive and negative humor adds complexity to predicting the outcomes of humor. Focusing on the foundation aspect of humor as a form of social play provides guidance on choosing a theory-informed integrative framework that could explain the implications of humor in the workplace. The belongingness need tenet of the self-determination theory offers a promising framework to synthesize existing research and to direct future studies. Paper 1 reviews the literature and concludes with an integrative framework suggesting …

A Case Study Of Mexican Immigrant Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Evelia Vega
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this phenomenological case study is to explore the misconception that is occurring in schools today about Mexican Immigrant parents' involvement. Using the Sociocultural and Funds of Knowledge theories to ground this study, I conducted in-depth phenomenological semi-structured interviews with six participants. The participants were Mexican Immigrant parents who resided in a specific Oregon county where their children attended school. They shared their perceptions and experiences about being involved in their children's education. The analysis led to three themes in the findings, which were: Perceptions, Culture, and Communication. The first theme provided a glimpse into the participants' lived …

Teaching Routines And Student-Centered Mathematics Instruction: The Essential Role Of Conferring To Understand Student Thinking And Reasoning, Eva Thanheiser, Kathleen Melhuish
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We compare two lessons with respect to how a teacher centers student mathematical thinking to move instruction forward through enactment of five mathematically productive teaching routines: Conferring To Understand Student Thinking and Reasoning, Structuring Mathematical Student Talk, Working With Selected and Sequenced Student Math Ideas, Working with Public Records of Students’ Mathematical Thinking, and Orchestrating Mathematical Discussion. Findings show that the lessons differ in the enactment of teaching routines, especially Conferring to Understand Student Thinking and Reasoning which resulted in a difference in student-centeredness of the instruction. This difference highlights whose mathematics was being centralized in the classroom and whether …

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article analyzes critical reflection groups held over the course of a year-long collaborative ethnography between me as researcher and five novice bilingual teachers. Drawing on feminist theories of emotion as knowledge, I argue that coalitional critical consciousness developed in our meetings through emotional expression and acknowledgment of identity in connection to systems of power. I also explore the affordances of collaborative methods in the formation of collective critique for practicing teachers.
Support For Working Students: Understanding The Impacts Of Employment On Students' Lives, Rebecca Summer, Megan Mccoy, Isabelle Trujillo, Esperanza Rodriguez
Support For Working Students: Understanding The Impacts Of Employment On Students' Lives, Rebecca Summer, Megan Mccoy, Isabelle Trujillo, Esperanza Rodriguez
University Honors College Faculty Publication and Presentations
The majority of college students work, and there are well-documented findings about the impacts of student work on academic performance. However, there is little research on the impacts of this work on other aspects of students’ lives. In this study we ask: What are the impacts of student employment beyond academic performance? Using our methodological approach of student-driven research and a mix of quantitative and qualitative analysis, we find that work has four main impacts on students’ lives: it limits flexibility in students’ schedules, leaving them vulnerable in emergencies; it requires students to make difficult financial calculations; it can cause …
Risk Analysis For Asset Protection In Hoyt Arboretum, Portland, Or, Nathan Kossnar
Risk Analysis For Asset Protection In Hoyt Arboretum, Portland, Or, Nathan Kossnar
Masters in GIS Practicum Reports
In order to fulfill Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) certification obligations to the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), this project delineated areas within Hoyt Arboretum where tree hazards have the potential to fall on important infrastructure and areas of frequent use. The project utilized Metro’s RLIS lidar data to generate a canopy height model which was then applied to a variable window filter (vwf) algorithm to determine individual tree heights and locations throughout the park. Previously defined protection areas were used to determine which surrounding trees have the potential to damage structures or injure park visitors in the chance of …
Exploring Associations Between Military Identity And Well-Being Outcomes Among Post-9/11 Veterans After Separation, James David Lee
Exploring Associations Between Military Identity And Well-Being Outcomes Among Post-9/11 Veterans After Separation, James David Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Approximately 200,000 service members exit the military each year; as of 2016, there were 19 million veterans in the U.S. As service members transition out of the military and acclimate to civilian life, they face a multitude of stressors. For example, estimates vary from 44 to 72% of veterans reportedly experience increased stress during their transition which often entails securing civilian employment, navigating interpersonal difficulties, and adapting to the challenges of civilian life. These stressors have harmful consequences and have been linked to physical and mental health, and suicide risk. Despite these findings, research examining the well-being of veterans following …

Selective And Differential Feeding On Marine Prokaryotes By Mucous Mesh Feeders, Carey P. Sweeney, Kelly R. Sutherland, Anne Thompson
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Microbial mortality impacts the structure of food webs, carbon flow, and the interactions that create dynamic patterns of abundance across gradients in space and time in diverse ecosystems. In the oceans, estimates of microbial mortality by viruses, protists, and small zooplankton do not account fully for observations of loss, suggesting the existence of underappreciated mortality sources. We examined how ubiquitous mucous mesh feeders (i.e. gelatinous zooplankton) could contribute to microbial mortality in the open ocean. We coupled capture of live animals by blue-water diving to sequence-based approaches to measure the enrichment and selectivity of feeding by two coexisting mucous grazer …

Community Gis Workshop Design & Delivery: Columbia County Geographic Workshop At Scappoose Public Library, Marty Marquis
Masters in GIS Practicum Reports
Geographic information systems (GIS) provide tools for industry, government, and the public to describe, visualize and organize space both conceptually and materially. Because the technology is complicated and potentially expensive, it is often out of the reach of those communities that might most benefit from its use, even as it’s routinely wielded by business interests, bureaucrats, and representative bodies to identify and legitimize administrative boundaries, potential areas for growth and profit, spatially oriented legislation (restricted areas, zoning), and so forth. Communities whose members know how to use a GIS gain potential advantages in deploying narratives that contest official plans for …

Scholarship demonstrates that ePortfolios enable students to collect work over time and reflect upon personal, academic, and career growth. However, a discussion on whether ePortfolios helps firstyear students describe their equity-mindedness and document their campus belonging perspectives remains mostly unexplored. The purpose of this point-in-time, qualitative research study is to describe first-year students’ experiences completing an on-campus physical walkthrough each spring quarter of 2017, 2018, and 2019. All first-year students were enrolled in a yearlong Freshman Inquiry course at Portland State University in Oregon. This study utilizes Saldaña’s (2016) in vivo coding approach to analyze students’ survey responses and summative …

Using critical race counterstorytelling, I tell a story about the experiences of Mexican/Mexican American/Xicanx (MMAX) undergraduate students at private, historically and predominantly white university in the Northeast. Drawing on in-depth interviews, participant observations, pláticas, document analyses, and literature on race and space and racism in higher education, I argue that the racially hostile campus environment experienced by MMAX students at their respective university manifests itself as a form of educational-environmental racism. Through narrated dialogue, Aurora (a composite character) and I delve into a critical conversation about how educational-environmental racism is experienced by MMAX students through a racialized landscape in the …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background Flavoured tobacco products are not restricted in Indonesia, a country with about 68 million adults who smoke. Most use clove-mixed tobacco cigarettes (‘kreteks’); non-clove (‘white’) cigarettes are also available. Although the use of flavour chemicals has been identified by WHO as promoting tobacco use, little has been reported for Indonesia about the levels of flavourants in either kreteks or ‘white cigarettes’.
Methods 22 kretek brand variants and nine ‘white’ cigarette brand variants were purchased in Indonesia during 2021/2022; one of the kretek packs contained three colour-coded variants, giving a total sample number of 24 for the kreteks. Chemical analyses …

Theorizing The Korean Wave| K(Q)Ueer-Pop For Another World: Toward A Theorization Of Gender And Sexuality In K-Pop, Jungmin Kwon

This article argues that the K-pop space, which on one level appears to be homogeneously cishetpatriarchal, actually encompasses multiple configurations of gender and sexual identity. Nonetheless, academic discussions about gender and sexuality in K-pop have been significantly weighted toward the idea of “soft masculinity” regarding male performers, thereby muffling other possible interpretations. I suggest a new term, K(Q)ueerness. It means the aesthetics, imaginations, practices, performances, and ideas of K-pop players sublate binaristic identifications, including masculinity and femininity and heterosexual and homosexual—as well as Butler’s distinction between performance and performativity—to embrace the multifarious expressions of gender and sexuality surrounding K-pop. This …

Taking A Heavier Toll? Racial Differences In The Effects Of Workplace Mistreatment On Depression, Ji Woon Ryu, Erik Gonzalez-Mulé, Ernest H. O'Boyle
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Previous studies have found that workplace mistreatment positively relates to depression, a critical mental health disorder. However, it is unknown whether mistreatment affects all individuals’ depressive symptoms equally. Drawing from the hopelessness theory of depression and the stigma literature, we suggest that Blacks suffer from greater depression than Whites when they experience similar levels of workplace mistreatment because Blacks, as members of a racial minority group, are more likely to attribute workplace mistreatment to their race. This, in turn, causes them to make a pessimistic attribution (i.e., attributions that are internal, stable, and global) about themselves that, ultimately, leads to …

Chemical Reaction Networks In A Laplacian Framework, J.J.P. Veerman, T. Whalen-Wagner, Ewan Kummel
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The study of the dynamics of chemical reactions, and in particular phenomena such as oscillating reactions, has led to the recognition that many dynamical properties of a chemical reaction can be predicted from graph theoretical properties of a certain directed graph, called a Chemical Reaction Network (CRN). In this graph, the edges represent the reactions and the vertices the reacting combinations of chemical substances. In contrast with the classical treatment, in this work, we heavily rely on a recently developed theory of directed graph Laplacians to simplify the traditional treatment of the so-called defi- ciency zero systems of CRN theory. …
