1981-82 Revenues And Expenditures In Washington County: An Examination Of Geographic Incidence, Sheldon Edner, Larry Conrad
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
This report is the second phase of what is known as the Washington County Urban Services Study. First phase research commenced in March, 1983 and was completed in December, 1983. The focus of this first phase was the comparative cost of urban service provision by jurisdiction by service for the cities, special districts (excluding schools) and County that provide services inside the Washington County Urban Growth Boundary. The results of this research were reported in "Expenditures for Urban Services in Washington County: A Benchmark Comparison" which was issued in January, 1984. The second phase research examined the revenue and expenditure …

Peri-Urban Agriculture In Western Washington: An Identification Of Factors Of Potential Influence To The Development Of Metropolitan Food Policy, William H. Gray
Peri-Urban Agriculture In Western Washington: An Identification Of Factors Of Potential Influence To The Development Of Metropolitan Food Policy, William H. Gray
Dissertations and Theses
Historically, agricultural policy has been developed at the national level, while land use decisions have been made at the municipal or county level. In primarily rural areas, the policy objectives of these domains are largely consistent: agricultural development. In urban areas, however, the food production objectives of national policy and the planning objectives of local government may be incongruent. This research uses the European construct of "peri-urban agriculture" as a framework in which to address the issues confronting both farm producers and metropolitan areas.
The principal hypothesis to be tested in this research is that farmer characteristics differ between peri-urban …
A History Of The Street Railway Systems Of Vancouver, Washington, 1889-1926, David Warren Freece
A History Of The Street Railway Systems Of Vancouver, Washington, 1889-1926, David Warren Freece
Dissertations and Theses
The decade of the 1880s was a time of unprecedented development in the Pacific Northwest. Railroads were being constructed, immigration was high, lumber in demand and statehood for Washington appeared imminent. Vancouver, Washington, benefited from this prosperity. In 1888, a Portland firm built a steam powered railway from East Portland, through its real estate development, Woodlawn, to the Vancouver ferry. The success of this enterprise in aiding the sale of real estate was observed by several Vancouver men who formed the Columbia Land and Improvement Company to promote the sale of their property. The company constructed a horse drawn street …

Alternating Current Studies And Kinetic Analysis Of Valinomycin Mediated Charge-Transport Through Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Kenneth Lee Cox
Alternating Current Studies And Kinetic Analysis Of Valinomycin Mediated Charge-Transport Through Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Kenneth Lee Cox
Dissertations and Theses
In this study we have investigated the frequency dependence of bilayer lipid membranes for a series of glycerylmonoolein/n-decane bilayers in various aqueous ionic solutions containing the ionophore valinomycin. Reliable values of membrane capacitance and conductance were obtained over the frequency range 0.2 - 200 KHz using an automatic balancing bridge under the control of a microprocessor unit. The admittance data was then normalized and curve-fitted to produce relaxation times and amplitudes from which the kinetic rate parameters, as deduced from a single slab dielectric membrane model, were calculated. These ac experimental rate constants were then compared with those obtained from …

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi
Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
A formula for the stopping power of neutrinos interacting via the standard weak-interaction model, but incorporating the possibility of neutrino oscillations among the three flavors, is derived. The results are applied to study the solar-neutrino anomaly and it is found that the anomaly cannot be accounted for by many orders of magnitude from consideration of the energy losses of the neutrinos interacting with the solar matter, even if the oscillation hypothesis is found to be valid.

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis
High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis
Dissertations and Theses
A new preparative route to the only neutral chromium(V) oxide fluoride, chromium oxide trifluoride, has been accomplished by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride at high temperature. The chromium oxide trifluoride is produced as crystals which are suitable for single crystal studies. In reactions of chromium oxide trifluoride with alkali and alkaline metal fluorides in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, new chromium(V) oxide fluoride salts were obtained; these salts were not of high purity due to unknown problems. An attempt to prepare chromium oxide tetrafluoride by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride failed to …

Incest: A Study In Networking In Multnomah County, Oregon, Joanne Mcclarty
Dissertations and Theses
Reported cases of incest in Multnomah County, Oregon, as in the rest of the country, are increasing yearly. Effective networking between agencies is important in order to successfully work with the problem. The research problem of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the present network of agencies working with incest in Multnomah County. In order to evaluate network effectiveness the following objectives were established: to provide a "cultural" description of the major components of the Multnomah County network; to determine whether a common definition of incest among practitioners exists and to compare the networking system in this county …

Counseling The Batterer, Robert Oliver Brown
Counseling The Batterer, Robert Oliver Brown
Dissertations and Theses
Domestic violence has received increasing attention in recent years as an area of concern for the helping professional. Despite this interest, programs for counseling the batterer are relatively few and counseling interventions for use with this client population are in what could be termed an experimental phase. The purpose of Counseling the Batterer is to review the pertinent literature concerned with counseling the batterer, to explore several programs which have been involved in this effort, and also to design a model group counseling program for abusive males. The foundation for the model program is based on the pertinent literature and …
Inquiry Into The Causes And Significance Of Cytoplasmic Vacuolation Of Neutrophils In The Peripheral Circulation, Gary Xavier Haight
Inquiry Into The Causes And Significance Of Cytoplasmic Vacuolation Of Neutrophils In The Peripheral Circulation, Gary Xavier Haight
Dissertations and Theses
One-half million cases of septicemia are reported annually with a mortality of around 35%. Diagnosis depends in part on blood cultures which require one to two weeks. It would be advantageous if an early sign of septicemia were available.
Cytoplasmic vacuolation of polymorphonuclear neutropnils is occasionally seen in the peripheral blood smears of patients who have infections. The object of this work was to determine the cause and significance of cytoplasmic vacuolation with the goal of using the occurrence of vacuolation as an early indicator of infection.
