Manipulation Or Education?: Symbolic Language, Belief System And The Truman Doctrine, John Gunn Tilson
Manipulation Or Education?: Symbolic Language, Belief System And The Truman Doctrine, John Gunn Tilson
Dissertations and Theses
The question arises in the analysis of foreign policy decision making regarding how consensus or approval by the public is attained for policies. Some authors have suggested that consensus is obtained through the manipulation of opinion by decision makers. One case often cited as an example of manipulation is the 1947 announcement of the Truman Doctrine.
In determining the validity of these arguments a review was conducted of the language of the doctrine and the interpretations of newspaper columnists. In addition, a review of personal documents of the decision makers was conducted to determine their impressions.

Volume 12, Number 2
Special Festure: The Other Japan; Investing in Community; Energy Entrepreneurs; Ecological Design
RAIN began in October 1974 as a publication of ECO-NET, an environmental education network funded by the Hill Foundation and an Environmental Education grant. Its office was based in the Environmental Education Center at Portland State University. With a focus on the Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon, RAIN originally described itself as a “bulletin board” with an “emphasis on environmental/energy related and communications kinds of information” and interested in “the evolutionary possibilities of inter-disciplinary connections.”

Modeling Location For Cadastral Maps Using An Object-Oriented Computer Language, Daniel Kjerne
Modeling Location For Cadastral Maps Using An Object-Oriented Computer Language, Daniel Kjerne
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The challenge to designers of multipurpose computer-aided land information systems is to capture enough of the "deep structure" of the problem domain to enable a system to answer user questions and requests in a satisfactory way. Criteria defining "satisfactory" in each case must include considerations of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and cost. These considerations, when applied to the location in space of parcel boundaries and property corners, present unusual difficulties. This is in large measure due to the fact that important elements of the field measurement process, and the determination of location based on what are essentially logical {legal) abstractions, are …

Technology Impact Assessment: The Effectiveness Of Advanced Instructional Technology In Remedying Learning Difficulties Of Disadvantaged Youngsters In An Urban Setting, Wossen Encubahre
Dissertations and Theses
Technological advancement has allowed widespread use of computers. Teachers are using computer based instruction in educating talented and disadvantaged youngsters. Unabated by unsettled issues and claims, computers are introduced to cope with declining enrollment and school revenues; pressure to improve student achievement and cut costs. However, some educators fear two possibilities: computer displacement of teachers; and creating a class of technologically disadvantaged students that could result from a growing gap of access to computers. Another factor is the restriction of disadvantaged students to basic skills. While providing opportunities of a wider application to others. The objectives of this research are: …
Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz
Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a feedback cycle on problemsolving groups. A formal method, Systematic Multiple Level Observation of Groups (SYMLOG), was employed for the analysis of behavior in such groups. The system, which codes on multiple levels of communication, served both as a theoretical and an explanatory approach. Problemsolving groups which included a feedback session on group process were compared with problemsolving groups which were not given feedback. The study used primary data from SYMLOG field diagrams to determine whether group movement, leader movement, self-perceptions, and group satisfaction would be affected by feedback …
Effects Of Stress And Social Support On Maternal Attachment With A Handicapped Infant, Cecelia Ostien Capuzzi
Effects Of Stress And Social Support On Maternal Attachment With A Handicapped Infant, Cecelia Ostien Capuzzi
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to compare the attachment process of mothers with and without a handicapped infant and to examine the effects of stress and the social support network on this process. The research was a prospective, longitudinal study comparing two different mother-infant groups on the dependent variable, maternal attachment. The independent variables handicap-nonhandicap, maternal characteristics, perinatal events, and other stressors were analyzed for their effect on maternal attachment. The social support network was examined to determine its direct and indirect effect on the attachment process. The sample was composed of 36 mother-infant dyads. Data were gathered in …

Elderly Stroke Patients And Their Partners: A Longitudinal Study Of Social Support And Well-Being Changes Associated With A Disabling Stroke, Marie Therese Rau
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation explored the relationship of demographic, social network, social support, and stroke-related factors to depressive symptomatology and well-being in 50 elderly individuals who had recently suffered a first, completed stroke and their partners. Data were gathered at two points in time, with interviews scheduled six months apart. Outcome measures included the CES-D depression scale and the Index of Psychological Well-Being. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlational procedures, multiple regression, and change-focused regression analyses. For the caregivers, lower depression levels at Time 1 were associated with better subjective health, less concern about being able to care for the patient …
Producer Cooperatives And Industrial Democracy: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of Cooperative And Conventional Plywood Plants, Youssef Khodaparast
Producer Cooperatives And Industrial Democracy: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of Cooperative And Conventional Plywood Plants, Youssef Khodaparast
Dissertations and Theses
Widely differing theoretical expectations exist concerning the economic performance of labor-managed firms or producer cooperatives (PCs). While a good number of theoretical studies of these firms by economists have been undertaken, there remain considerable gaps in the empirical record. This is especially true in the case of American PCs. In general, theoretical controversies have not been tempered by enough empirical analysis. While some expect good performance from PCs, others are much less sanguine. This study compares the economic performance of a group of eight worker-owned producer co-op plants with that of eight conventional mills in the Pacific Northwest softwood plywood …
