The Impact Of Physical Environment On The Social Climate Of Two Jails, James G. Houston Jan 1987

The Impact Of Physical Environment On The Social Climate Of Two Jails, James G. Houston

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years there has been a strong movement to replace outdated and inadequate jails throughout the United States. According to the National Sheriff's Association 15.9% of all jails have been under a court order to improve services or conditions at one time or another. In addition, 960 jails of the 3,493 existing jails in the United States were built prior to 1950. This need for new construction or renovation has given birth to a new area of expertise among architects and contractors--jail design and construction. While design and construction techniques have improved, little is known of the effects of …

Other research questions sought information on the extent and impact of local school district policies and practices that were consistent with the state policy. The methodology for the …

Comparisons Of Total Factor Productivity In The U.S. Electric Industry, Maya Myoga Jan 1987

Comparisons Of Total Factor Productivity In The U.S. Electric Industry, Maya Myoga

Dissertations and Theses

Since the onset of the recession in the 1970's, consumers have frequently expressed frustration with what appear to be ever-increasing utility bills, blaming what they perceive as unnecessarily high rates on industry inefficiency. From the industry perspective, inefficiency is not only the problem which has developed since the recession. The more critical issue is the industry's transition from a noncompetitive environment to a competitive one. In the past, the electric utility industry did not have to compete because each utility operated in an exclusive service territory, and each was regulated by the government. However, currently the industry is experiencing increased …

Equality Of Educational Opportunity For Language Minority Students In Oregon: A Survey Of Esl/Bilingual Education Policy In Local School Districts, Mary Eileen Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Currently there is a national policy debate on the issue of appropriate educational programs for language minority students. This study addresses the issue at the state level, asking: Are ESL/bilingual education policies in Oregon school districts providing equal educational opportunity for language minority students? The purpose of the study is to document ESL/bilingual policies in Oregon school districts, and to analyze them in terms of their contribution to equality of educational opportunity. Policy analysis serves as the theoretical framework for the study because of its potential as a synthesizing paradigm for studies in educational administration. The Policy Process Model (Heflin, …

A Case Study Of A Nationally Recognized Middle School's Decentralized Participatory Governance Structure, Donna Lynn Carman Jan 1987

A Case Study Of A Nationally Recognized Middle School's Decentralized Participatory Governance Structure, Donna Lynn Carman

Dissertations and Theses

To effectively and substantively impact the realization of school improvement goals, there is a perceived need for the implementation of participatory processes that involve parents, patrons, students, and educators through decentralization of the planning, programming, and implementation phases. Related to this need is the pressing requirement of providing educational leaders with a greater understanding of what knowledge and skills they should possess to effectively guide and direct the implementation of decentralized participatory processes. An exploratory case study of a nationally recognized middle school's decentralized participatory structure was conducted. The purpose of this study was to provide the comprehensive context of …

Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1987

Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article describes the African concept of time. The African concept of time is one that has never been properly understood by non-Africans. The reason probably lies in the fact that in Africa time becomes tied-in to activities of the season, day or night rather than in terms of a large solar clock or calendar. The African seasons are not thought of as stretching evenly, but rather are considered as periods in a chain of events one gradually culminating into another.

An Analysis Of The Shift Of Employment Toward Multi-Sectoral Services Industries In California, 1960-1980, Ayalew Adamu

Dissertations and Theses

The structural change in the United States economy represented by the growth of the service sector has received a great deal of discussion and analysis in recent years. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that have determined the growth of the separate service sectors (namely distributive, personal, social, and business) from 1960 to 1980 in the regional economy of California. The research addresses many issues. First, a general discussion is presented of the structural change in the United States economy toward a growing service sector. An obvious indicator of this change is the disproportionately higher rate …

Segment Congruence Analysis: An Information Theoretic Approach, Jamshid Hosseini-Chaleshtari Jan 1987

Segment Congruence Analysis: An Information Theoretic Approach, Jamshid Hosseini-Chaleshtari

Dissertations and Theses

When there are several possible segmentation variables, marketers must investigate the ramifications of their potential interactions. These include their mutual association, the identification of the best (the distinguished) segmentation variable and its predictability by a set of descriptor variables, and the structure of the multivariate system(s) obtained from the segmentation and descriptor variables. This procedure has been defined as segment congruence analysis (SCA). This study utilizes the information theoretic and the log-linear/logit approaches to address a variety of research questions in segment congruence analysis. It is shown that the information theoretic approach expands the scope of SCA and offers some …

Suggestions for program development stem from acknowledgement of desiderata for professional education in the public interest that include the humanity of students, a sense of community, power. sharing by students and faculty, integration of knowledge and practice, training for advocacy roles, and continuity of training.

Structural Analysis Of The Pacific Northwest Lumber And Plywood Industries, James G. Strathman, Anthony M. Rufolo, M. Hossein Haeri Jan 1987

Structural Analysis Of The Pacific Northwest Lumber And Plywood Industries, James G. Strathman, Anthony M. Rufolo, M. Hossein Haeri

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

The lumber and plywood industries in the Pacific Northwest were particularly affected by the 1979-1982 construction recession. A subsequent recovery in output has occurred, but employment levels have remained relatively depressed. The potential for a planned reduction in the amount of timber sold from the national forests in the region also exists, giving rise to some uncertainty about the future prospects for these industries. This paper identifies the major structural factors affecting the performance of lumber and plywood producers in the region. It then proceeds to develop and simulate a set of alternative scenarios covering the 1986-1990 period to examine …

Interregional Competition In The Wood Products Industry: An Econometric Spatial Equilibrium Approach, M. Hossein Haeri Jan 1987

Interregional Competition In The Wood Products Industry: An Econometric Spatial Equilibrium Approach, M. Hossein Haeri

Dissertations and Theses

This study presents a multiregional model of the soft wood forest products industry in the United States, designed to describe the dynamics of interregional competition in the industry and to provide means for policy experimentation and short-term projection of regional market shares. Two products (softwood lumber and plywood), five product supply regions (including Canada), and six product demand regions are recognized. The design of the model is based on a combined top-down/bottom-up approach and consists of three interdependent components: (1) the aggregate product market, (2) regional product markets, and (3) regional factor markets. Model solutions are obtained by the simultaneous …

Spoils Of Statehood: Montana Communities In Conflict, 1888-1894, William L. Lang Jan 1987

Spoils Of Statehood: Montana Communities In Conflict, 1888-1894, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Montana's political life in the 1890's was characterized by stalemate, uncompromising parochial demands, personal animosity, and corruption as local communities fought over the prizes of statehood. The major prize, the state capital, was won by Helena after a campaign featuring class and community antagonism, racist rhetoric, personal attacks, and vote buying. In the interests of local power brokers, the legislature created several units of higher education instead of establishing a consolidated university. The battles over the spoils of statehood created a pattern of cynicism and parochialism that continues to influence the state's political life.

Selected Functions Of Nurse Practitioners In Oregon And Some Implications For Nurse Preparation, Mary Jean Schindler Jan 1987

Selected Functions Of Nurse Practitioners In Oregon And Some Implications For Nurse Preparation, Mary Jean Schindler

Dissertations and Theses

Purpose. This study was designed to determine the perceptions of the Oregon-certified nurse practitioners (NPs) with respect to their usage, competency, and preparation for selected functions. Clarification of what NP's perceive themselves doing and with what degree of competence could give structure and direction to their preparation. In Oregon, NPs provide specialized primary care in collaboration with physicians and other health care professions and agencies. The performance of an NP may vary according to the specialty, setting, and needs of the consumer. If some functions of the NP could be brought into clearer focus, then not only could benefits come …

Determinants Of The Spatial Distribution Of Peri-Urban To Rural Agriculture In The United States, Ibrahim Amin Abdel-Karim Jan 1987

Determinants Of The Spatial Distribution Of Peri-Urban To Rural Agriculture In The United States, Ibrahim Amin Abdel-Karim

Dissertations and Theses

Two issues are focal to the subject of the spatial distribution of crops in peri-urban zones. The first deals with developments in the fields of transportation, other technology, urbanization, and other factors which are not only prevalent in developed world economies, but which also are thought to force the cultivation of freshly consumed agricultural commodities away from the immediate vicinity of the market center. The second issue pertains to indirectly consumed crops, which are thought to shun proximity to the market center, where land rents per unit area are characteristically high, even when conditions for productions are ideal. Traditional models …

A Study Of Ability To Choose Appropriate Conflict Behavior Determined By The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Conflict Behavior Styles, Mary H. Zinkin Jan 1987

A Study Of Ability To Choose Appropriate Conflict Behavior Determined By The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Conflict Behavior Styles, Mary H. Zinkin

Dissertations and Theses

Two major theoretical controversies were addressed in this study: (1) whether conflict behavior can best be explained by personal characteristics or by situational characteristics and (2) whether there is one best way to handle conflict or several effective ways depending on the situation. Specifically, it explored the relationship between locus of control (internal, powerful others, chance) and conflict behavior (nonconfrontation, solution-orientation, control) in situations where choosing each of these strategies was regarded most appropriate. The study gathered data relevant to four questions: (1) Is there a relationship between an individual's conflict behavior style and personal characteristics such as feelings of …

A Comparison Of Principal And Teacher Perceptions Of Principal Leadership Skills, Alan Mark Carlton

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined principals' and teachers' perceptions regarding both the importance of certain leadership skills and the ratings of principals' actual skills. There are strong theoretical bases for the use of principals' and teachers' perceptions in this study. The analysis of perceptions of leadership skills can lead to: (1) an increased awareness of principals' strengths and weaknesses; (2) greater communication between principals and teachers; and, (3) hopefully, increased productivity on the part of principals and teachers. The population for this study included a group of twenty-eight principals who participated in the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators Assessment Center, and teachers …

Finding A New Voice: The Oregon Writing Community Between The World Wars, Karen Stoner Reyes Nov 1986

Finding A New Voice: The Oregon Writing Community Between The World Wars, Karen Stoner Reyes

Dissertations and Theses

The period of 1919 to 1939 was a significant one for the development of the literature of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. The literary work produced in the region prior to the first world war was greatly influenced by the "Genteel tradition" of the late nineteenth century. By 1939, however, the literature of Oregon and the region had emerged from the outdated literary standards of the pre-war period and had found a new, realistic, natural voice, strongly regional in nature and rooted in the modern American tradition.

This change came about in large part through the efforts of a small …

Body Size, Nest Predation, And Reproductive Patterns In Brown Thrashers And Other Mimids, Michael T. Murphy, Robert C. Fleischer Nov 1986

Body Size, Nest Predation, And Reproductive Patterns In Brown Thrashers And Other Mimids, Michael T. Murphy, Robert C. Fleischer

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe the breeding biology of Brown Thrashers (Toxostoma rufum) in Kansas, and combine this with data from other temperate-zone breeding Mimidae to characterize reproductive patterns in this group. Brown Thrashers produced clutches of 3 to 6 eggs, but clutches of 4 predominated. Most pairs raised 2 broods per year. Incubation required between 13 and 14 days, and hatching was usually asynchronous. Though sample size was small, asynchrony appeared to increase in frequency towards the end of the breeding season. Nestlings grew rapidly, and in 10 days or less most pre-fledgingg rowthw as completed. Young fledgedn ormallya t 11 days …
