Spira Mirabilis, Kim D. Ray
Spira Mirabilis, Kim D. Ray
Dissertations and Theses
My graduate work, culminating in Spira Mirabilis, my final thesis project, has been about a search for simplicity. What I have discovered along the way is complexity. In searching for a fundamental principle that generates a complex form, I discovered an apparently simple form that is, rather, a consequence of complex relationships. By creating a work that is grounded on a fundamental, universal principle, I hoped to evoke a subliminal or other-than-conscious response that would effect a transformation in the viewer. Ultimately, I found my own transformation through the creative process, and acquired a new viewpoint through a minimal …
Theory Of Nothing, Adam Wieslaw Rupniewski
Theory Of Nothing, Adam Wieslaw Rupniewski
Dissertations and Theses
My work was presented in the form of an installation. Using three and two-dimensional objects, as well as sound and light, I created a site specific type of installation. Materials involved in this project were hydrostone, plaster, steel and copper. The sound I recorded on my steel sculptures in an acoustic space and then mixed to create sound compositions to amplify the feeling for the space. This installation reflects my pursuits in painting and sculpture, as well as my interest in music and light effects. Its philosophical and spiritual content were expressed through visual language, symbolic use of elements and …

Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren
Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren
Dissertations and Theses
Three hundred and seven randomly selected American network television commercials aired between October 18 and November 18, 1997 were analyzed to determine their informational value using the fourteen criteria established by Resnik and Stem in 1977. The results of this study were compared with Resnik and Stem's 1991 study, revealing that there has not been any significant change in the amount of information in American television commercials since Resnik and Stem's replication sample.
This study also used Resnik and Stem's (1977) criteria to further examine if the amount-of information contained in TV commercials varied depending on the gender or age …

The Effects Of School-Mandated Community Service On Subsequent Intrinsic Motivation To Volunteer, Carol Berubee
The Effects Of School-Mandated Community Service On Subsequent Intrinsic Motivation To Volunteer, Carol Berubee
Dissertations and Theses
Many American high schools and universities require students to perform community service. Although social psychological research shows that intrinsic motivation for an activity decreases when that activity is rewarded or when the actor perceives little self-determination in performing the activity, no research has examined the effect of intrinsic motivation on volunteerism subsequent to mandated community service.
The purpose of the present study was to determine if students who had been required to perform community service would be less likely to volunteer in the community at a later date than would those students who had not been required to serve. In …
A Descriptive Study Of First-Year Students Of Color At Portland State University: The Student's Perspective, Dorothy Claire Oliveros
A Descriptive Study Of First-Year Students Of Color At Portland State University: The Student's Perspective, Dorothy Claire Oliveros
Dissertations and Theses
The population of the United States is rapidly growing and the country's demographics are changing. As the U.S. population nears 269 million, 74.2 million represent ethnic minorities. Hence, many more ethnic minority students will enter the hallways of academe. Therefore, it is important for institutions of higher education to provide ethnic and racially diverse students opportunities for academic and social development within the educational setting.
Attending predominantly white institutions can cause ethnic minority students social, cultural, and mental adjustments that may affect academic achievement.
This thesis is an examination of the similarities and differences among first-year African American, Latino, and …

Patient-Guided Investigation Of The Restoration Of Health Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Nancy Ann Carney
Patient-Guided Investigation Of The Restoration Of Health Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Nancy Ann Carney
Dissertations and Theses
The development of emergency department medical interventions and the implementation of fast-transport trauma systems has decreased the rate of death resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Without corresponding methods for long-term treatment and recovery, the prevalence of people disabled by TBI has increased, creating a growing public health problem. Investigations generated by physicians, rehabilitation programs, and social scientists, which attempt to associate standard measures of injury severity with outcome, leave unexplained variance in long-term functional status for persons with TBI.
The purpose of this investigation was to use persons with brain injury and their family members, to guide an analysis …

A comprehensive study of the strongly wind driven midlatitude buoyant plume from the Columbia River, located on the U.S. west coast, demonstrates that the plume has two basic structures during the fall/winter season, namely, a thin (~5~15 m), strongly stratified plume tending west to northwestward during periods of southward or light northward wind stress and a thicker (~10~40 m), weakly stratified plume tending northward and hugging the coast during periods of stronger northward stress. The plume and its velocity field respond nearly instantaneously to changes in wind speed or direction, and the wind fluctuations have timescales of 2-10 days. Frictional …

Putting The Region To Work: An Analysis Of Workforce Development Services In Multnomah And Washington Counties, Kim Burnett, Ray Jackson, Britt Parrott, Matt Ransom, Claire Smith
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
This study was produced primarily as a tool for policy advocacy Workforce Development members therefore much of the analysis focuses on the role that community based organizations and community development corporations play in workforce development. However, policy makers and technical assistance providers, such as the Workforce Development Board, as well as government agencies, also play a critical role in the region’s workforce development system. Although this report does not focus as much on the role of these agencies, further study is needed to offer suggestions for how these players can best coordinate their efforts with that of community based organizations …

It is clear that transportation organizations across the nation are integrating GIS into operations at many different levels—from day to day use for data display, to full-scale enterprise level integration for operations, inventory management, research and a variety of other purposes. The cost of building and maintaining a current and accurate GIS database can be substantial within any given organization. For some smaller level organizations—small counties, cities or special districts, the cost of gathering data, organizing it and implementing systems within expensive software on an expensive operating platform can be downright discouraging. Also, as more complex data structures are accumulated …

Temperature Sensitivity Of El Tor 01, Classical 01, And 0139 Vibrio Cholerae, Michelle Angela O'Neill
Dissertations and Theses
Vibrio cholerae has long been recognized as the causative agent of the disease cholera, but what has only become evident in recent years is the role of the environment in cholera. The cholera bacterium is found autochthonously in the marine and estuarian environment, and if there is any hope of controlling the disease the environmental aspects must be understood.
The central questions addressed in this study were how bacterial survival was influenced by temperature and the role that available nutrients play in V. cholerae survival. Survival of three different V. cholerae strains [classical (01); El Tor (01), and El Tor …

Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Margrete Bernard Merrick
Dissertations and Theses
Until recently, few have questioned the notion that the separation of uses in land use zoning is inherently correct. Many observers of the city are now suggesting that zoning, as it has been practiced in this country over the last 80 years, has created cities that are fractured and function poorly. Others propose that zoning should be reconsidered as a remedy for urban dysfunction. They suggest that the whole notion of zoning be rethought.
The purpose of this study is to uncover some of the underlying rationales and methodologies that set the model for zoning. This study examines the rationales …

The Antiquities Act Of 1906: The Public Response To The Use Of Presidential Power In Managing Public Lands, Barbara L. Grover
Dissertations and Theses
President Clinton created Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on September 17, 1996. The Antiquities Act of 1906 gives the president power to establish national monuments on public lands through presidential proclamation. The Act has been used to create national monuments in places such as Muir Woods, Grand Canyon, Mount Olympus, Jackson Hole, and the 1978 Alaskan d-2 lands. Its use has also produced negative public response, manifested as demonstrations, lawsuits, and congressional bills.
In spite of significant legal and legislative challenges, the Antiquities Act and most of the monuments established through its use remain. The negative public response to the Act …

Community Solutions: Moving Toward Brownfield Redevelopment, Matt Anderson, Scott Chapman, Martin Custred, Kirsten Krane, Camron Parker
Community Solutions: Moving Toward Brownfield Redevelopment, Matt Anderson, Scott Chapman, Martin Custred, Kirsten Krane, Camron Parker
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Urban growth boundaries are intended to encourage more development within the existing developed areas and save rural lands from urban sprawl. If this is true, why are there so many large areas of vacant land in the very heart of Portland? It is very likely that these vacant parcels of land are associated with the term "brownfields."
Brownfields are properties where expansion or development is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination on the site. Current owners, prospective purchasers, prospective lenders and neighbors have concerns about redeveloping brownfields. In many cases, these concerns cause properties to become abandoned or put …

Development And Validation Of A Work Safety Compliance Measure, Tara L. Smecko
Dissertations and Theses
It is important that organizations manage the safety behavior of employees by the implementation of a safety program including periodic assessment of the safety level (i.e., how frequently employees are complying with safety guidelines) in the organization. The occupational safety literature lacks sufficient assessment tools for measuring employee safety behavior.
The purpose of the present study was to develop and validate a comprehensive measure of compliance with safety behavior guidelines in the form of a questionnaire that can be utilized across industries and occupations. The research objectives for the present study were to: 1) Perform factor analysis on the safety …
