The Disposition Of Reported Child Abuse, Marc F. Maden Jan 1977

The Disposition Of Reported Child Abuse, Marc F. Maden

Dissertations and Theses

Child abuse is a significant contemporary community problem. Child abuse authorities are divided over the question of whether public intervention in the child abuse problem should be executed by law enforcement or social services agencies. Many jurisdictions, such as Multnomah County, Oregon, reflect this basic disagreement by authorizing the involvement of both of these agencies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between what happens to child abuse victims, their families, and the perpetrators and the community agency - law enforcement or social services (the Children's Services Division)-which investigated the case. Data were collected …

A set of city-wide policies were developed which apply to the entire jurisdiction, meeting requirements of state and regional planning agencies. A planning process is established; land use planning is utilized to further energy conservation. The city or area within the urban growth boundary was divided into five …

Citizen Participation: Individual Political Behavior And The Federal Mandate, Rick R. Paulson Jan 1977

Citizen Participation: Individual Political Behavior And The Federal Mandate, Rick R. Paulson

Dissertations and Theses

Federally mandated citizen participation has been controversial since its inception in 1964. It has been as difficult to implement in practice as it has been to define conceptually. An examination of the literature related to this federally mandated citizen participation uncovers a number of untested assumptions relating to the individual political behavior of those for whom participation is mandated. This literature concentrates on forms of organized group participation, and the direct action of these groups in the planning and policy-making process, but it tends to ignore the fact that participation in the organized neighborhood groups advocated is essentially an individual …

Hierarchical Restructuring And Catastrophe Theory, Martin Zwick Jan 1977

Hierarchical Restructuring And Catastrophe Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

John Platt's article, "Hierarchical Restructuring" (1970), has become something of a "mini-classic" in the systems literature, much like Herbert Simon's paper, "The Architecture of Complexity" (1962). Concerned with the phenomenology of structural change in social systems, in the personalities and psyches of individuals, and in biological and cultural evolution, it in fact quite nicely complements Simon's earlier emphasis on structure and stability. The purpose of this note is to point out a striking similarity between the images of transformation suggested by Platt, and some of the basic features of Rene Thom's catastrophe theory (1975), i.e. that this topological theory can …

Threshold Characteristics Of Mirrorless Lasers, Lee W. Casperson Jan 1977

Threshold Characteristics Of Mirrorless Lasers, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Detailed analytical expressions are developed for the output power and spectral characteristics of high‐gain mirrorless laser amplifiers. With regard to intensity variations and spectral narrowing, such lasers are similar in behavior to conventional laser oscillators. A threshold transition region is apparent as saturation sets in, and spectral rebroadening occurs in inhomogeneously broadened laser systems. These solutions take full account of saturation by both the right and left propagating radiation, and the results agree with experiments that have been reported.

Based on these assumptions, the two research questions are (1) are there significant factors in the causation of repeat abortions, and (2) what are the implications regarding the lack of information and service to women which have a direct relationship to repeat abortions.

The Attitudes Of Youth Workers On Delinquency And Delinquency Programs, Gary Lee Dominick, Carol Swartz, Michael Orval Taylor Jan 1977

The Attitudes Of Youth Workers On Delinquency And Delinquency Programs, Gary Lee Dominick, Carol Swartz, Michael Orval Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

This research developed from our interest in juvenile delinquency. We wished to examine how youth workers think about the causes of delinquency, the structure of delinquency programs, and their own role as workers. These perceptions will be examined by looking at workers' responses to statements dealing with 1) juvenile delinquency causation, 2) programs for treatment and prevention, and 3) the role of the worker. The responses will be examined in the light of a theoretical framework reflecting the continuum between theories and programs based on individual causation and those emphasizing societal factors.

Partisans, Godmothers, Bicyclists, And Other Terrorists: Women In The French Resistance And Under Vichy, Rayna Kline

Dissertations and Theses

During the years 1940-1944, the period of the German Occupation, French women played an active role in the political sphere as part of the organized Resistance movements. The women who participated were not isolated examples, but an extremely diverse group that cut across social milieux, political alignments and religious persuasions. The range of their activity in the spectrum of roles and the differences in their style challenge the stereotypes and persistent attitudes in French culture about women’s nature.

Women were leaders in the principal Resistance movements, participated in the organization and dissemination of the underground press and in the organization …

Beam Modes In Complex Lenslike Media And Resonators, Lee W. Casperson Dec 1976

Beam Modes In Complex Lenslike Media And Resonators, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

General sets of higher-order beam modes are derived for light propagation in media having spatial variations of the gain or loss. The resulting expressions are also valid for propagation through conventional optical elements and graded transmission filters. The four basic mode sets obtained include off-axis Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian modes of both real and complex argument. A procedure is developed for finding the resonant modes of laser oscillators containing arbitrary complex lens elements, and the mode stability properties of lasers can be interpreted physically by means of these formulas.

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas Nov 1976

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas

Dissertations and Theses

Chlorine is thought to play a major role in the mobilization and concentration of base metals in the formation of ore deposits. The regional distribution of chlorine in the Idaho Batholith was studied to see if this could be related to mineralization or metallic provinces. One hundred forty-eight whole-rock samples, mineral separates, and standards were analyzed for chlorine by x-ray fluorescence.

The expected concentration of chlorine in the biotite fraction was not found. The chlorine was not significantly water leachable from the whole rock samples following normal grinding. The Idaho Batholith as a source for mineralizing chlorine was not established. …

Does Urban Noise Represent A Hazard To Health?, Frances J. Storlie Nov 1976

Does Urban Noise Represent A Hazard To Health?, Frances J. Storlie

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of noise as a potential health hazard to urban man has been raised. The literature was used to establish two premises: that cities are noisy environments, and that noise-free societies have less coronary artery disease (CAD) than do industrialized sections of the world. These differences also hold for rural and urban areas of the United States.

Geographical questions concerning rate differentials for CAD have been addressed by numerous disciplines. Subsequently, social, psychological, and physical explanations have been put forth. Throughout this paper the emphasis has been placed on the physical aspects of noise exposure. The conceptual frame utilizes …
