The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen Sep 1970

The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen

Dissertations and Theses

During the latter part of the nineteenth century, European powers acquired large territorial areas in Africa. These territories ignored the boundaries of old African tribal kingdoms and the African modes of life, because the new countries were to serve as 'common market' areas supplying Europe with the wealth of the tropics. Nigeria is an example of the new superstructure which in operation fails to become a homogeneous entity after the assumption of political power by the Africans. There are problems of existing tribal kingdoms, of geographic distribution of ethnic groups and of traditional values. The British colonization of Nigeria also …

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson May 1970

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Life drawing presents some of the most difficult problems in the school art program: the difficulty of securing models, the necessity of using only the clothed model, and the resistance of many students to this particular discipline. The students' confidence in their own drawing abilities is at its nadir during early adolescence, and they become easily discouraged when faced with a live model as a subject. This thesis represents an effort to deal with these problems in a manner suited to the age and maturity level of the students. In order to build their self confidence, basic drawing skills and …

The Correlation Of Factors Relating To The Selection And Retention Of Student Teachers At Portland State University, Michael E. Carl May 1970

The Correlation Of Factors Relating To The Selection And Retention Of Student Teachers At Portland State University, Michael E. Carl

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past five years, increased enrollment in student teaching at Portland State University has forced the School of Education to consider its current guidelines and policies for admitting student teachers. School of Education funding and faculty time are being taxed to meet the demands placed on them by increasing enrollment. This study was undertaken to provide data to determine if and how enrollment in student teaching could be limited. To do this, the study examined the existing guidelines for screening and selecting student teachers. The aim of the design was to determine if any of the existing criteria used …

Cubist Painting Related To The Culture From Which It Came And Its Validity Today In The High School Curriculum, Virginia K. Fenton May 1970

Cubist Painting Related To The Culture From Which It Came And Its Validity Today In The High School Curriculum, Virginia K. Fenton

Dissertations and Theses

Cubism has often been referred to as "a dead art." It is the objective of this thesis to present evidence gained through working with high school art students that the study of Cubism, at the secondary level, can result in greater creativity and a genuine appreciation of the abstract. In addition to the study of Cubist artists and their techniques, a correlation was made between art of the early 1900's and other areas such as Social Science, Music and Literature of this time. By this method, the students were given a broader insight into the motives of the Cubist artists. …

Greece: The Colonels' Puritan Revolution, Nikolaos E. Mpras May 1970

Greece: The Colonels' Puritan Revolution, Nikolaos E. Mpras

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this paper is to examine the present political situation in Greece and the events that took place from the time that Papandreou's Center Union Party came to power in 1964 to the military coup d'etat in 1967. However, in order to develop a picture of what led to the coup of 1967, it is necessary not only to discuss specific events prior and during the coup, but also to present a brief background of modern Greek politics since Greece's independence from the Turks in 1821.

The paper is divided into five chapters: the first chapter briefly summarizes …

A Study Of The Role Of Acrylic Paints In The Secondary And Junior High School Art Curriculum, Alice Atkinson Benski May 1970

A Study Of The Role Of Acrylic Paints In The Secondary And Junior High School Art Curriculum, Alice Atkinson Benski

Dissertations and Theses

It was my purpose to study the role of acrylic paints and other products in the secondary high school and junior high school art curriculum in the area of painting, and related activities and to make a realistic evaluation of this medium. Because of its comparative newness and because of a general lack of knowledge of and experience with it, I felt such a study would fill a need relative to the utilization of acrylic products in the classroom. In preparation I read the material which was available on painting with acrylics'. The number of books published on the subject …

Nutritional Requirements For Protease Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Ps-1c, Richard Myer Avedovech May 1970

Nutritional Requirements For Protease Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Ps-1c, Richard Myer Avedovech

Dissertations and Theses

Pseudomonas aeruginosa Ps-1C produces an extracellular proteolytic enzyme which from preliminary studies appears to be inducible, and responsible for corneal destruction in injured dyes. In the present study the nutritional requirements for this bacterium to produce the proteolytic enzyme(s) were investigated. Preliminary studies indicated that proteose peptone offered the required nutrients for good enzyme production. The separation of the components of proteose peptone by Sephadex C-10 and Sephadex G-75 descending column chromatography was undertaken to illucidate the nutritional requirements. It was also noted that casamino acids hydrolysate served as a good substrate for Pseudomonas aeruginosa to produce this enzyme. The …

The Sex Offender In Oregon : Fact And Fallacy, Richard G. Storch, Virginia T. Peterson May 1970

The Sex Offender In Oregon : Fact And Fallacy, Richard G. Storch, Virginia T. Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

The principal objective of this study was to examine the proposition, advanced by several authorities, that the views, attitudes and beliefs of the public concerning the sex offender and his offense are characterized by fallacy, stereotype and misconception. That the approach to the problem of the sex offense has been and continues to be primarily legislative is a fact that can be demonstrated; and that legislation reflects and is influenced by public attitudes and beliefs is a premise that can be supported. Hence the accuracy or inaccuracy of these public attitudes and beliefs will have a bearing on the legislation …

Studies On The Distribution And Habitat Of Demodex Folliculorum, Michael James Gimbol May 1970

Studies On The Distribution And Habitat Of Demodex Folliculorum, Michael James Gimbol

Dissertations and Theses

The present study was undertaken to determine the incidence of infestation with Demodex folliculorum, a skin mite parasitizing man, and to investigate those factors which influence its occurrence. These factors were the personal hygiene, sex, age and skin condition of the human host. A detailed view of the habitat of this parasite is also included so that the controversy surrounding its role as a possible pathogen or vector of disease could be explored in light of the current knowledge. A number of sites of infestation were sampled by a number of different techniques. The primary sample site was the nasal …

Women In Professions And Status Inconsistency, Miriam Grace Mcclure May 1970

Women In Professions And Status Inconsistency, Miriam Grace Mcclure

Dissertations and Theses

The general concern of this thesis is with the position of women in the United States. Specifically, the focus is on women in the professions. The theoretical perspective is taken from Everett C. Hughes’ 1945 discussion of “Dilemmas and Contradictions of Status.” Hughes maintained that when an incumbent of a status holds an unexpected auxiliary characteristic he is in a dilemma because others do not know how to respond to the contradictory stimuli. Others’ responses tend to reflect unfavorably back on the individual’s self-image and he seeks to avoid reactions from others by adopting behavior to reduce the impact of …
