Academic Achievement And Course Taking Among Language Minority Youth In U.S. Schools: Effects Of Esl Placement, Rebecca Callahan, Lindsey Wilkinson, Chandra Muller
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The 1974 Lau decision requires that U.S. public schools ensure a meaningful education for students learning English. English as a Second Language (ESL) placement is an institutional response to the linguistic needs of these students; however, its academic implications remain largely unexplored. Using nationally representative data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS), the effects of ESL placement on college preparatory course enrollment and academic achievement of language minority students are estimated, first with fixed effects regression models and then with multi-level propensity score matching techniques. While numerous school and individual level factors beyond language proficiency predict ESL placement, a significant …

On average, 3.5 billion text messages are sent daily in the United States. Americans are now texting twice as much as they are talking on their mobile phones, making text messaging the preferred method of communication for people on the go. Texting is also vital to a key library target audience - students - who are a prime audience for what we provide: information services of many stripes. How can libraries offer this new channel for interaction in a way that works best both for users and for staff? Come learn more about the current state of SMS based reference …

In a busy bustling library do we have time to sit down and train every group that comes through the door? What do we do about the groups that use the services that may never come through the door? How many people come through the door thinking the library is just a house of books? How many of those people got that idea from someone else? How do you open their minds to the possibilities? You teach the people that are teaching them. This session is about an experiment at OIT, hosted from off site to teach instructors off and …
Even Internet Computers Want To Be Free: Using Linux And Open Source Software On Library Public Workstations, Matthew Nielsen, Sean Park
Even Internet Computers Want To Be Free: Using Linux And Open Source Software On Library Public Workstations, Matthew Nielsen, Sean Park
Online Northwest
Use of open source software (OSS) is common in the server rooms of many libraries. Many have even taken the step of switching their public workstations to the open source web browser Firefox. However, making the jump to an open source operating system for public computers has not caught on quite as well. In this presentation, we will detail how several libraries in Coos County, Oregon, have switched their public internet terminals predominantly to open source software, specifically Ubuntu Linux, Firefox, and OpenOffice. We will show how Coos County libraries are able to provide the excellent range of services - …

Based on the overwhelming evidence that the general public is increasingly using mobile phones to access and retrieve online information, the Oregon State University Libraries began developing a mobile library website that included a searchable catalog. OSU Libraries staff used content adaptation techniques to provide an optimal experience to mobile users regardless of the type of device they are on: users on web-enabled phones with smaller screens receive an attractive interface tailored to the limitations of their device; and users on Smartphones, such as the iPhone, receive a data rich interface that uses Apple design principals to deliver a look …

Collaboration And Curriculum Integration: Presenting Shared Information Literacy Tutorials At The Point Of Need, Jen Klaudinyi
Online Northwest
The world of information is expanding, student enrollment is increasing, and so the need for information instruction is also rising. Most instruction librarians, however, would describe their departments as understaffed. Online tutorials can be an efficient way to deliver information instruction, and sharing tutorials across institutions can further maximize resources. Collaborative information instruction and inter-institutional resource sharing reflects the "webscale" of the information sphere. However, information instruction is more effective when it is presented to students in relation to a specific course, or better yet, a specific assignment. How can librarians make the most of sharable online information literacy tutorials …

Homocystamides Promote Free-Radical And Oxidative Damage To Proteins, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez, Jorge O. Escobedo, Soojin Lim, George K. Samoei, Robert M. Strongin

Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with several major diseases. However, it is not clear whether homocysteine is a marker or a causative agent. The majority (ca. 80%) of the homocysteine present in humans is protein bound. The study of the posttranslational modification of proteins by homocysteine and its cyclic congener, homocysteine thiolactone, is emerging as an area of great current interest for unraveling the ongoing “mediator/marker controversy” [Jacobsen DW (2009) Clin Chem 55:1–2]. Interestingly, many of the pathologies associated with homocysteine are also linked to oxidative stress. In the current study, chemical evidence for a causal relationship between homocysteine-bound …

The article presents the author's views on the inaugural issue of the journal. He states that the journal is aimed at building a shared vision in the society. He believes that one of the reasons for the society's inability to make progress is because of the academia, media, law and politics cast complex problems as polar opposites, which is known as argument culture that the journal aims to resolve.

Oregon Department Of Administrative Services Customer And Employee Survey Results, Masami Nishishiba, Mariah Ann Kraner, Charlene Zil, Dennis Kurtz
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
In order to obtain input from DAS customers and employees, the Department of Administrative Services (DAS), in partnership with the Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) at Portland State University, and Pivotal Resources Inc, conducted two surveys: one for customers and one for DAS employees. The purpose of the survey was to provide information to the HB 5002 External Working Group, and to inform and guide the change initiative at DAS.
The web-based customer survey was sent to State of Oregon employees electronically. Approximately 15,000 state employees and board members received the e-mail inviting them to participate in the customer survey. 1,656 …
Guild's Lake Courts : An Impermanent Housing Project, Tanya Lyn March
Guild's Lake Courts : An Impermanent Housing Project, Tanya Lyn March
Dissertations and Theses
Guild's Lake Courts was built as temporary worker housing for the steel and shipyard industries during World War II. The massive housing development in Northwest Portland consisted of 2,432 units of housing, five community buildings, five childcare centers, a grade school and a fire station. Guild's Lake Courts was the eighth largest housing project built at that time in the United States. The peak population in January 1945 was approximately 10,000 individuals. Archival research, face-to-face oral histories, and resident reunions were used to explore the social, architectural and political history of Guild's Lake Courts. The lens for understanding how the …

Local Political Information On The Web: The Case Of The 2007 Philadelphia Mayoral Campaign, Lee Shaker
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
Scholars and pundits have widely discussed the decline of print journalism, but there has been very little empirical research focused on examining online alternatives. This article utilizes a unique sample of online local political content related to the 2007 Philadelphia mayoral campaign to address this void. A content analysis of this dataset has three objectives: to depict the range of sources of online local political information (LPI) available to Philadelphians, to compare the LPI provided by these various sources, and to determine the amount and provenance of the original LPI that is available on the web. New media sources of …
Solving The Childcare And Flexibility Puzzle: How Working Parents Make The Best Feasible Choices And What That Means For Public Policy, Arthur C. Emlen
Solving The Childcare And Flexibility Puzzle: How Working Parents Make The Best Feasible Choices And What That Means For Public Policy, Arthur C. Emlen
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
This monograph’s contribution to knowledge was two-fold: 1) reliable measures of the quality of childcare as perceived and assessed by the parents themselves; and 2) discovery that the quality of the care chosen by working parents depends upon the amount of flexibility they can muster from their immediate environment at work, at home, or from accommodating childcare providers. It doesn’t matter which source of flexibility works best for them. It’s the flexibility that allows optimum choice. The findings suggest that public policy should recognize the vast diversity of parental choices and the flexibility needed to improve their choices. That means …

Working Mothers' Decisions, Experiences And Feelings About Using On-Site Childcare, Stephanie Larae Hixson-Somanchi
Working Mothers' Decisions, Experiences And Feelings About Using On-Site Childcare, Stephanie Larae Hixson-Somanchi
Dissertations and Theses
On-site childcare is an ever-increasing form of childcare. By understanding the decisions, experiences and feelings of mothers using on-site centers, informed policy decisions about viable childcare models can be made. In the broadest terms current literature reveals that economic, societal, functional, and psychological factors influence a mother's decisions in regards to using childcare. This study used these markers as the basis for the development of questions to ascertain the experiences, feelings and decisions of mothers using on-site childcare. A phenomenological method was used. Twenty-four participants using on-site childcare from four organizations in different industries were located through a snowball sample …
Characterization Of Mesoscopic Fluid-Like Films With The Novel Shear-Force/Acoustic Microscopy, Xiaohua Wang
Characterization Of Mesoscopic Fluid-Like Films With The Novel Shear-Force/Acoustic Microscopy, Xiaohua Wang
Dissertations and Theses
The shear force mechanism has been utilized as a distance regulation method in scanning probe microscopes. However, the origin of shear force is still unclear. One of the most important reasons for the shear-force damping is due to the presence of a water contamination layer at the sample surface in ambient conditions. Understanding the behavior of such mesoscopic fluid-like films is of significance for studies of not only scanning probe microscopy but also other complex surface phenomena, such as nanotribology, lubrication, adhesion, wetting, and the microfluidity of biological membranes. This thesis investigates, in particular, the dynamics of mesoscopic fluids confined …
