Distribution Of The Sum Of Independent Unity-Truncated Logarithmic Series Variables, Russell James Wayland May 1970

Distribution Of The Sum Of Independent Unity-Truncated Logarithmic Series Variables, Russell James Wayland

Dissertations and Theses

Let X1, X2, ..., Xn be n independent and identically distributed random variables having the unity-truncated logarithmic series distribution with probability function given by f(x;θ) = αθX/x x ε T where α = [-log(1-θ) - θ]-1, 0 < θ < 1, and T = {2,3,...,∞}. Define their sum as Z = X1 + X2 + ... + Xn.

We derive here the distribution of Z, denoted by p(z;n,θ), using the inversion formula for characteristic functions, in an explicit form in terms of a linear combination of Stirling numbers of the first kind. A recurrence relation for the probability function p(z;n,θ) is obtained …

The Chemistry Of Trifluorothiolacetic Acid, Patricia Diane Weeks May 1970

The Chemistry Of Trifluorothiolacetic Acid, Patricia Diane Weeks

Dissertations and Theses

Addition reactions of perfluorothiolacetic acid (TFTAA) with organic and inorganic substrates were studied and six new compounds containing the trifluoroacetyl group have been prepared. Two types of reactions were observed, free radical and nucleophilic addition. Under the influence of ultraviolet light, TFTAA (CF₃COSH) adds to olefins to form 1:1 adducts. The CF₃COS• radical appears to be the adding species. Three new olefin adducts were prepared: CF₃COSCFHCF₂H, CF₃COSCH₂CF₂H, and CF₃COSCH₂CFH₂. In addition, this was found to be a new way to prepare CF₃COSCH₂CH₃, which had been previously prepared by another route. Physical constants, analytical data, infrared, ultraviolet, nmr and mass spectra …

Automated Information Retrieval Systems For Legal Research, Robert G. Baylor May 1970

Automated Information Retrieval Systems For Legal Research, Robert G. Baylor

Dissertations and Theses

Purpose. This study of automated information retrieval systems was undertaken to attempt to ascertain the extent and development of a total legal information system.

Overview. Historically, lawyers have searched the statutes and case law in the traditionally manual method. Given consistent high standards of editing, not too complex materials, and a collection of manageable size, this manual method will work to reasonable satisfaction, so long as a document never changes in meaning or significance. Lawyers point out that the present manual system is inadequate because with 30,000 new judicial decisions and 15,000 new statutes being promulgated each year …

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Systematic Relaxation Training Of Chronically-Anxious Subjects On The Communication Variable Of Closed-Mindedness, La Ray M. Barna May 1970

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Systematic Relaxation Training Of Chronically-Anxious Subjects On The Communication Variable Of Closed-Mindedness, La Ray M. Barna

Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of whether an attempt to reduce the trait of high tension-anxiety by means of systematic neuro-musculature relaxation training will result in a decrease of the communication variable of closed-mindedness.

A general review of the literature showed that the problem of tension-anxiety is complex, pervasive, and detrimental to effective communication. First, an attempt is made to bring relevant information to the field of general speech by citing a few findings from the research of other disciplines concerning the nature and effects of tension-anxiety. Currently-used methods of anxiety reduction are mentioned, and one, neuro-musculature relaxation training, discussed as …

A Study An Analysis Of Stochastic Linear Programming, Chamberlain Lambros Foes May 1970

A Study An Analysis Of Stochastic Linear Programming, Chamberlain Lambros Foes

Dissertations and Theses

This essay investigates the concept of linear programming in general and linear stochastic programming in particular. Linear stochastic programming is described as the model where the parameters of the linear programming admit random variability. The first three chapters present through a set-geometric approach the foundations of linear programming. Chapter one describes the evolution of the concepts which resulted in the adoption of the model. Chapter two describes the constructs in n-dimensional euclidian space which constitute the mathematical basis of linear programs, and chapter three defines the linear programming model and develops the computational basis of the simplex algorithm. The second …

Hot Electron Injection Into Liquid Argon From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver, P. Kumbhare May 1970

Hot Electron Injection Into Liquid Argon From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver, P. Kumbhare

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hot electrons from a tunnel cathode have been injected into liquid argon (99.998% pure) at 87°K. The current vs voltage characteristics indicate that the injected hot electrons thermalize very slowly, losing their energy only by elastic scattering processes and finally by capture by the dilute impurities. The deduced thermalization time and distance are very long compared with that in helium, where bubble formation is responsible for energy loss.

A Proposed Guidance Program For Vietnamese High Schools, Tran Thi Thanh-Tan May 1970

A Proposed Guidance Program For Vietnamese High Schools, Tran Thi Thanh-Tan

Dissertations and Theses

The writer has proposed a practical guidance program for Vietnamese high schools. The study has been written while education in Vietnam is in a period of revolution. Radical changes have been undertaken to keep up the national demand for progress and economical self-independence. The need for guidance services in high schools is necessary to promote learning toward better achievement and more logical training of manpower and social adjustment. The traditional Vietnamese school, influenced by thousands years of Confucian concepts and hundred years of French culture, has been ineffective in providing competent scientific and technical personnel, despite a world moving toward …

Validation Of The Orthogonal Dimensions Underlying The Icl And The Octant Constellations Assumed To Be Their Measure, Donald Edward Lange May 1970

Validation Of The Orthogonal Dimensions Underlying The Icl And The Octant Constellations Assumed To Be Their Measure, Donald Edward Lange

Dissertations and Theses

Validity of the orthogonal dimensions underlying the Interpersonal Check List (ICL) and the octant constellations assumed to be their measure was investigated by inferential design. Experimental conditions consisted of 4 role-played videotapes produced so that the interpersonal behavior of the main character would illustrate the 4 poles of the ICL’s 2 bipolar dimensions -- Dominance-Submission and Love-Hostility. So were 200 students enrolled in 8 beginning-psychology summer classes. Each class viewed, via closed-circuit TV, only 1 of the 4 videotapes; then members were asked to describe the main character viewed, by using an ICL form IV. Protocols were scored by a …

Systems Reliability Using The Flow Graph, Kenneth Edward Farrier Jan 1970

Systems Reliability Using The Flow Graph, Kenneth Edward Farrier

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of calculating the reliability of a complex system of interacting elements is delineated to a linear system, no element of the system having a reliability distribution in terms of any other e1ement of the system, where only one path is taken through the system at a time. A precise definition is then developed to specify the reliability of the linear, single path at a time, system. A precise and concise generating function is found that effortlessly produces the reliability of the linear, single path at a time, system directly from the reliability flew graph of the system.

The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of hydrofluoric acid and of the fluoride ion on the enzyme, yeast alcohol dehydrogenase and to distinguish between the effect of the fluoride ion and of hydrofluoric acid. The rate of the enzyme reaction was followed spectrophotometrically at 340 mμ on the Cary 14 Model spectrophotometer according to the method of Racker. The data taken from the instrument recordings were plotted on two types of graphs, the Lineweaver-Burk plot and the Hanes …

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson May 1969

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The directional correlation of the 346-136 Kev gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹ was measured using the delayed coincidence method with a source of Hf¹⁸¹ in 27 N HF. The contributions to the composite delayed coincidence spectrum of the interfering 133-482 Kev and 133-346 Kev cascades were removed by the subtraction from this spectrum of appropriate 133-482 Kev pure delayed coincidence data. The extracted 346-136 Kev coincidence data then yielded the correlation coefficients A₂₂ = 0.190±0.011 and A₄₄. = -0.025±0.024 that are consistent with the established spin sequence 5/2(E2)9/2(M1 + E2)7/2 and with an admixture of 16.2%±1. 2% E2 radiation in the …

Steady-State And Transient Currents In Organic Liquids By Injection From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver Apr 1969

Steady-State And Transient Currents In Organic Liquids By Injection From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental data are presented on the currents induced in organic liquids by injection from a tunnel cathode. The injection level was varied over a wide range resulting in almost no space‐charge limitation to almost complete space‐charge limitation. Results were different from that usually observed in solids, in that at low fields, the steady‐state current was proportional to V², while at high fields the current was proportional to V. By proper choice of electrode spacing and applied voltage, space‐charge‐limited current transients as low as 10⁻¹¹ A∕cm² and 5 sec transit times were observed. A smooth transition between the electrode‐limited and the …

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson Oct 1968

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson

Dissertations and Theses

The preparation of allenes by the condensation of an acyl chloride with a phosphonium ylid and subsequent elimination of an acid salt and a phosphonium oxide has been established by Bestmann and Hartung. It was felt that this process could be expanded to include the synthesis of butatrienes. Butatrienes are stabilized by aromatic substituents while aromatic substituents decrease the nucleophilicity and reactivity of the phosphonium ylids to be used in the synthesis of the butatrienes. The ylids employed were carbomethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, and a new compound, carbethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, both of which failed to form alkylated condensation products. Both ylids were prepared …

New Computer Methods For Protein Crystallography, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

New Computer Methods for Protein Crystallography, by Martin Zwick. Submitted to the Department of Biology on 30 August 1968 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The section, "MYOGLOBIN REFINEMENT," describes the fitting of an idealized polypeptide chain to a set of approximate backbone coordinates for the protein, sperm whale myoglobin. This procedure refines the structure by imposing upon it known bond distances and angles, and simultaneously derives a representation of the polypeptide conformation in terms of the values of the rotation angles about its single bonds. The overall rms and mean deviation between …

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris Aug 1968

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris

Dissertations and Theses

The classical method of solving random walk problems involves using Markov chain theory. When the particular random walk of interest is written in matrix form using Markov chain theory, the problem must then be solved using a digital computer. To solve all but the most trivial random walk problems by hand would be extremely difficult and time consuming. Very large random walk problems may even prove difficult to solve on the smaller digital computers. This paper intends to demonstrate a method that may be used to solve large random walk problems in a quick and economical manner. This alternate method …

Search For Quantum Oscillations In Field Emission Current From Bismuth., Donald Dean Casey Jun 1968

Search For Quantum Oscillations In Field Emission Current From Bismuth., Donald Dean Casey

Dissertations and Theses

An experimental search based on previous published theoretical work was made for de Haas-van Alphen-like quantum oscillations in field emission current. The study was motivated by the possible applicability of de Haas-van Alphen measurements to the study of Fermi surfaces near real surfaces, Field emitters were fabricated from bismuth single crystals grown from the melt by a modified Bridgeman technique. Field emission current was measured with the field emitter cooled by contact with a liquid helium bath. Most measurements were made at 4.2° K, although a few measurements were made at 2.02°K; Fowler-Nordheim plots of the experimental current-voltage data were …
