Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp Jun 1992

Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp

Dissertations and Theses

In an attempt to achieve more efficient designs, the technological frontier is pushed further and further. Every year science probes for a better understanding of natural phenomena, discovering new and improved methods to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. One of the new technologies is the nonlinear analysis of structural systems using inelastic post-buckling member performance. Inelastic post-buckling member performance is defined as the constitutive relationship between axial load and displacement after the ultimate member capacity has been exceeded. A nonlinear analysis is able to predict the failure behavior of a structural system under ultimate loads …

Textural Constraints On Effusive Silicic Volcanism: Beyond The Permeable Foam Model, Jonathan H. Fink, Steven W. Anderson, Curtis R. Manley

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transitions between explosive and effusive phases of silicic volcanic eruptions have been related either to stratification of volatiles in the source magma body or to the loss of volatiles through the permeable host rock of the conduit. One way to distinguish between these two models is to map and analyze the vesicular and glassy textures found in silicic lava flows. In this paper we present textural observations and isotopic evidence from active and Recent silicic lava flows which show thaI at least some vesiculation occurs during surface advance of extrusions, after magma has reached the earth's surface. This view is …

Strategic Meaning: Words As Tools Or Traps, Debra Blankenship Jun 1992

Strategic Meaning: Words As Tools Or Traps, Debra Blankenship

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

Upon initial glance, Plato’s Cratylus appears to be a grand romp of words with Socrates’s wit front and center. But a closer examination of the text shows a deadly serious, carefully plotted battle by Socrates to establish his philosophical perspective as preeminent. Plato thus reveals, by the end of the dialogue, that the true battle that Socrates is waging is the struggle to establish what foundation knowledge shall be built upon.

Fage Measurements Of Tropospheric Ho With Measurements And Model Of Interferences, Thomas M. Hard, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, C. Y. Chan, Robert J. O'Brien

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ambient HO measurements by low-pressure laser-excited fluorescence with chemical modulation, and supporting ozone and water-vapor data, are presented for periods in May and August 1987. The observed peak daytime ambient HO concentrations in Oregon are in the range (2.5 to 8) times106 molecules cm⁻³ and show small negative offsets due to photochemical interference. Direct measurements of the interference at fixed [O₃] give the dependence on ambient [H₂O] and on the modulating reagent [isobutane]. At ambient [O₃]=30 p.p.b. and 10 torr H₂O, with excitation and detection at a total pressure of 4 torr, the net interference is equal to [HO]=-1.3times10⁶ molecule …

Diurnal Ho₂ Cycles At Clean Air And Urban Sites In The Troposphere, Thomas M. Hard, C. Y. Chan, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, Robert J. O'Brien

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

HO₂ concentrations have been determined at two Oregon sites for continuous periods of 36 to 48 hours, using fluorescence assay with gas expansion. At the sea level coastal site (45degN 124degW), NNW winds prevailed during daytime, and a point measurement of very low total nonmethane hydrocarbon concentration indicated the presence of remote tropospheric air of oceanic origin. At the urban site, HO₂ was determined during moderately low ozone pollution levels. At both sites, maximum daily [HO₂] was in the range of 1-2times10⁸ cm⁻³ under clear-sky conditions, with an estimated overall uncertainty of 40%.

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp May 1992

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of jail overcrowding has forced corrections officials and jail administrators to examine ways in which to better manage available jail space. Pretrial release and detention policies have been a target of this examination as pretrial defendants typically account for 50% of a jail's population. Standards for pretrial release exist, but their administration varies by jurisdiction. The impact of jail overcrowding on pretrial release policies has been to decrease the time available to render a decision. Recent efforts to standardize pretrial release standards in Oregon have not addressed the issue of expediency. The current study examines pretrial misconduct (failure …

A New Approach To The Decomposition Of Incompletely Specified Functions Based On Graph Coloring And Local Transformation And Its Application To Fpga Mapping, Wei Wan May 1992

A New Approach To The Decomposition Of Incompletely Specified Functions Based On Graph Coloring And Local Transformation And Its Application To Fpga Mapping, Wei Wan

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis presents a new approach to the decomposition of incompletely specified functions and its application to FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) mapping. Five methods: Variable Partitioning, Graph Coloring, Bond Set Encoding, CLB Reusing and Local Transformation are developed in order to efficiently perform decomposition and FPGA (Lookup-Table based FPGA) mapping. 1) Variable Partitioning is a high quality hemistic method used to find the "best" partitions, avoiding the very time consuming testing of all possible decomposition charts, which is impractical when there are many input variables in the input function. 2) Graph Coloring is another high quality heuristic\ used to …

Modeling Techniques For Water Supply Forecasting In The Western United States, David Charles Garen May 1992

Modeling Techniques For Water Supply Forecasting In The Western United States, David Charles Garen

Dissertations and Theses

Water supply forecasting in the western United States is the prediction of the volume of water passing a given point on a stream during the primary snowmelt runoff season. Most water supply forecasts are produced from multiple linear regression models using snowpack, precipitation, and streamflow measurements as independent variables. In recent years, conceptual watershed simulation models, typically using a time step of one day, have also been used to produce these forecasts.

This study examines model usage for: water supply forecasting in the West and has three specific purposes. The first is to examine the traditional usage of multiple linear …

Porting Chorus To The Pa-Risc: Booting, Jon Inouye, Ravi Konuru, Jonathan Walpole, Marion Hakanson

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We started out with the low level Tut (HP-CX 2.0) boot code. One of our goals was to reuse as much of this code as possible, which would reduce the amount of low level code we would have to debug. This was very important, especially fiince the RP 9000/834 has a very complex I/O architecture and we lacked any sophisticated debugging tools. Writing the PA-Chorus boot code involved modifying the Tut code to match the Chorus startup sequence. In the remainder of this section, we present an overview of the PA-RISC boot mechanisms and the Chorus startup sequence. Sectlon 2 …

The Tensile Strength Of Liquid Nitrogen, Jian Huang Jan 1992

The Tensile Strength Of Liquid Nitrogen, Jian Huang

Dissertations and Theses

The tensile strength or the negative pressure required to induce cavitation in a pure liquid has been a puzzling subject. On one hand, the classical nucleation theory has met great success in predicting the nucleation rates of superheated liquids. On the other hand, most of reported experimental values of the tensile strength for different liquids are far below the prediction from the classical nucleation theory. In this study, homogeneous nucleation in liquid nitrogen and its tensile strength have been investigated. In order to carry out the measurement of the tensile strength of liquid nitrogen, different approaches for determining the pressure …

Probabilistic Determination Of Failure Load Capacity Variations For Lattice Type Structures Based On Yield Strength Variations Including Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Leander Anton Bathon Jan 1992

Probabilistic Determination Of Failure Load Capacity Variations For Lattice Type Structures Based On Yield Strength Variations Including Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Leander Anton Bathon

Dissertations and Theses

With the attempt to achieve the optimum in analysis and design, the technological global knowledge base grows more and more. Engineers all over the world continuously modify and innovate existing analysis methods and design procedures to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. In the field of complex structural analysis many researchers pursue this challenging task. The complexity of a lattice type structure is caused by numerous parameters: the nonlinear member performance of the material, the statistical variation of member load capacities, the highly indeterminate structural composition, etc. In order to achieve a simulation approach which represents …

Orthogonal And Nonorthogonal Expansions For Multi-Level Logic Synthesis For Nearly Linear Functions And Their Application To Field Programmable Gate Array Mapping, Ingo Schafer Jan 1992

Orthogonal And Nonorthogonal Expansions For Multi-Level Logic Synthesis For Nearly Linear Functions And Their Application To Field Programmable Gate Array Mapping, Ingo Schafer

Dissertations and Theses

The growing complexity of integrated circuits and the large variety of architectures of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) require sophisticated logic design tools. In the beginning of the eighties the research in logic design was concentrated on the development of fast two-level AND-OR logic minimizers like the well known ESPRESSO. However, most logic functions have a smaller and often faster circuit realization as a multi-level circuit. Thus, synthesis tools emerged for the minimization of the circuit area in a multi-level realization. Most of these synthesis tools are based on the "unate paradigm". Therefore, the synthesis methods are only advantageous for …

Other data were gathered through capture and release studies, radiotelemetry, and …

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators : Stability Criteria, Pitak Chenkosol Jan 1992

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators : Stability Criteria, Pitak Chenkosol

Dissertations and Theses

The stability criteria for single-mode standing-wave laser oscillators in the strongly homogeneously broadened limit are reported for the first time. Two types of stability criteria are presented. The first type, called type 1, corresponds to the minimum value of threshold parameter for which an infinitesimal perturbation away from steady state grows into an oscillatory solution. Another type of stability criteria, called type 2, corresponds to the minimum value of threshold parameter for which large amplitude oscillatory solutions do not decay to the steady state solution. Undamped pulsations in single mode strongly homogeneously broadened standing-wave laser oscillators are found to occur …

Proteolytic Modification Of The Ca²-Release Mechanism Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum In Skeletal Muscle, Ute Goerke Jan 1992

Proteolytic Modification Of The Ca²-Release Mechanism Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum In Skeletal Muscle, Ute Goerke

Dissertations and Theses

Calcium ions are important mediators in the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. Depolarization of sarcolemma and transverse tubule causes an increase of myoplasmic ca2+ concentration which induces contraction of the myofibrils. In skeletal muscle fibers, the intracellular Ca2+ concentraton is regulated by an extensive membrane system, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Ca2+-release from SR is initiated by depolarization of the transverse tubule via a process referred to as excitation-contraction coupling. The Ca2+ - release channel located in the junctional SR plays an important role in this mechanism.
