Using Music-Related Concepts To Teach High School Math, Vytas Nagisetty Aug 2014

Using Music-Related Concepts To Teach High School Math, Vytas Nagisetty

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to test a strategy which uses music-related concepts to teach math. A quasi-experimental study of two high school remedial geometry sections was conducted during a review lesson of ratio, proportion, and cross multiplication. A pretest was given to both groups. Then, Group A received normal textbook instruction while Group B received the treatment, Get the Math in Music, which is an online activity involving proportional reasoning in a music-related context. Afterwards, a posttest was given to both groups. Pretest and posttest scores were used to compare gains in subject knowledge between the groups. Then …

Using Gist Features To Constrain Search In Object Detection, Joanna Browne Solmon Aug 2014

Using Gist Features To Constrain Search In Object Detection, Joanna Browne Solmon

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis investigates the application of GIST features [13] to the problem of object detection in images. Object detection refers to locating instances of a given object category in an image. It is contrasted with object recognition, which simply decides whether an image contains an object, regardless of the object's location in the image.

In much of computer vision literature, object detection uses a "sliding window" approach to finding objects in an image. This requires moving various sizes of windows across an image and running a trained classifier on the visual features of each window. This brute force method can …

History And Dynamics Of Net Rotation Of The Mantle And Lithosphere, Maxwell L. Rudolph, Shijie Zhong Aug 2014

History And Dynamics Of Net Rotation Of The Mantle And Lithosphere, Maxwell L. Rudolph, Shijie Zhong

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The net rotation of Earth’s lithosphere with respect to the underlying mantle is the longestwavelength component of toroidal flow in the mantle and is sensitive to both mantle buoyancy structure and lateral viscosity variations. The lithospheric net rotation in the geologic past implied by plate reconstructions using a hotspot reference frame for the past 100 Myr is up to five times greater than the presentday rate of lithospheric net rotation. We explore the role of lateral viscosity variations associated with subcontinental keels in producing the lithospheric net rotation for the geologic past and find that the introduction of subcontinental keels …

Predicted Effects Of Gypsy Moth Defoliation And Climate Change On Forest Carbon Dynamics In The New Jersey Pine Barrens, Alec M. Kretchun, Robert M. Scheller, Melissa S. Lucash, Kenneth L. Clark, John Hom, Steve Van Tuyl

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Disturbance regimes within temperate forests can significantly impact carbon cycling. Additionally, projected climate change in combination with multiple, interacting disturbance effects may disrupt the capacity of forests to act as carbon sinks at large spatial and temporal scales. We used a spatially explicit forest succession and disturbance model, LANDIS-II, to model the effects of climate change, gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) defoliation, and wildfire on the C dynamics of the forests of the New Jersey Pine Barrens over the next century. Climate scenarios were simulated using current climate conditions (baseline), as well as a high emissions scenario (HadCM3 A2 …

Investigating The Link Between Surface Water And Groundwater In The Tule Lake Subbasin, Oregon And California, Esther Maria Pischel Aug 2014

Investigating The Link Between Surface Water And Groundwater In The Tule Lake Subbasin, Oregon And California, Esther Maria Pischel

Dissertations and Theses

Water allocation in the upper Klamath Basin of Oregon and California has been challenging. Irrigators have increasingly turned to groundwater to make up for surface water shortages because of shifts in allocation toward in-stream flows for Endangered Species Act listed fishes. The largest increase in groundwater pumping has been in and around the Bureau of Reclamation's Klamath Irrigation Project, which includes the Tule Lake subbasin in the southern part of the upper Klamath Basin. Previous groundwater flow model simulations indicate that water level declines from pumping may result in decreased flow to agricultural drains in the Tule Lake subbasin. Agricultural …

An Analysis Of Vegetation Recovery Following Dam Removal At Hemlock Recreation Site, Washington, Greer Stewart Ramsey Aug 2014

An Analysis Of Vegetation Recovery Following Dam Removal At Hemlock Recreation Site, Washington, Greer Stewart Ramsey

Dissertations and Theses

Dam removals are becoming increasingly common as dams reach their life expectancy and face costly upgrades associated with relicensing. Though removal is often viewed as a success in terms of ecological restoration, it also represents a major disturbance to an area. Previous research has shown that native species do not survive as well at these disturbed sites, and invasive species often dominate. This study examines the vegetation response in the drained reservoir area after the removal of Hemlock Dam on Trout Creek, a tributary to the Wind River in southern Washington. Transects were established and quadrats were sampled to determine …

Predicting Bicyclist Comfort In Protected Bike Lanes, Nicholas Mark-Andrew Foster Aug 2014

Predicting Bicyclist Comfort In Protected Bike Lanes, Nicholas Mark-Andrew Foster

Dissertations and Theses

Long popular in northern Europe, protected bike lanes, also known as "cycle tracks" or "separated bike lanes," are seeing increased interest in the United States. One of the primary benefits of protected bike lanes is that they may provide a higher level of comfort than a standard bike lane that is only delineated by an inches-wide painted stripe. Several methods exist for quantifying the quality of service provided by a roadway for a bicyclist; however, many of these models do not consider protected bike lanes and of those that do, none are based on empirical data from the US. This …

Optical Properties Of Nanostructured Dielectric Coatings, Brandon Giatti Aug 2014

Optical Properties Of Nanostructured Dielectric Coatings, Brandon Giatti

Dissertations and Theses

Solar cells have extrinsic losses from a variety of sources which can be minimized by optimization of the design and fabrication processes. Reflection from the front surface is one such loss mechanism and has been managed in the past with the usage of planar antireflection coatings. While effective, these coatings are each limited to a single wavelength of light and do not account for varying incident angles of the incoming light source. Three-dimensional nanostructures have shown the ability to inhibit reflection for differing wavelengths and angles of incidence. Nanocones were modeled and show a broadband, multi-angled reflectance decrease due to …

Automatic Calibration Of Water Quality And Hydrodynamic Model (Ce-Qual-W2), Nasim Shojaei Aug 2014

Automatic Calibration Of Water Quality And Hydrodynamic Model (Ce-Qual-W2), Nasim Shojaei

Dissertations and Theses

One of the most important purposes of surface water resource management is to develop predictive models to assist in identifying and evaluating operational and structural measures for improving water quality. To better understand the effects of external and internal nutrient and organic loading and the effects of reservoir operation, a model is often developed, calibrated, and used for sensitivity and management simulations. The importance of modeling and simulation in the scientific community has drawn interest towards methods for automated calibration. This study addresses using an automatic technique to calibrate the water quality model CE-QUAL-W2 (Cole and Wells, 2013). CE-QUAL-W2 is …

Prospective Elementary Mathematics Teacher Content Knowledge: What Do We Know, What Do We Not Know, And Where Do We Go?, Eva Thanheiser, Christine Browning, Alden Edson, Jane-Jane Lo, Ian Whitacre, Dana Olanoff, Crystal Morton

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors reviewed 112 research studies from 1978 to 2012 on prospective elementary teachers' content knowledge in five content areas: whole numbers and operations, fractions, decimals, geometry and measurement, and algebra. Looking across these studies, this final paper identifies the trends and common themes in terms of the counts and types of studies and commonalities among findings. Analyses of the counts show that the number of articles published each year focusing on prospective teacher (PT) content knowledge is increasing. Most articles across the content areas show that PTs tend to rely on procedures rather than concepts. However, the focus of …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: There is conflicting evidence on the immunologic benefit of treating helminth co-infections (‘‘deworming’’) in HIV-infected individuals. Several studies have documented reduced viral load and increased CD4 count in antiretroviral therapy (ART) naive individuals after deworming. However, there are a lack of data on the effect of deworming therapy on CD4 count recovery among HIV-infected persons taking ART.

Methodology/Principal Findings: To estimate the association between empiric deworming therapy and CD4 count after ART initiation, we performed a retrospective observational study among HIV-infected adults on ART at a publicly operated HIV clinic in southwestern Uganda. Subjects were assigned as having received …

Mathematical Content Knowledge For Teaching Elementary Mathematics: A Focus On Whole-Number Concepts And Operations, Eva Thanheiser, Ian Whitacre, George J. Roy Aug 2014

Mathematical Content Knowledge For Teaching Elementary Mathematics: A Focus On Whole-Number Concepts And Operations, Eva Thanheiser, Ian Whitacre, George J. Roy

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report represents part of a recent effort to summarize the state of knowledge of prospective elementary teachers' (PTs') mathematics content knowledge and the development thereof. Extensive reviews of the research literature were conducted by a recent PME-NA Working Group across various content areas. This report focuses on whole number and operations. Research in this area is scarce. What we do know from the literature is that PTs' knowledge of whole number and operations is insufficient and in need of improvement. PTs reason about whole numbers and operations in ways that are tied to the standard algorithms. At the same …

Interpretable Machine Learning And Sparse Coding For Computer Vision, Will Landecker Aug 2014

Interpretable Machine Learning And Sparse Coding For Computer Vision, Will Landecker

Dissertations and Theses

Machine learning offers many powerful tools for prediction. One of these tools, the binary classifier, is often considered a black box. Although its predictions may be accurate, we might never know why the classifier made a particular prediction. In the first half of this dissertation, I review the state of the art of interpretable methods (methods for explaining why); after noting where the existing methods fall short, I propose a new method for a particular type of black box called additive networks. I offer a proof of trustworthiness for this new method (meaning a proof that my method does not …

Potential Ramifications Of Common Core State Standards Adoption On Information Literacy, Jacob Paul Eubanks Jul 2014

Potential Ramifications Of Common Core State Standards Adoption On Information Literacy, Jacob Paul Eubanks

Communications in Information Literacy

In the United States, the decline in jobs for high school educated workers and the proliferation of jobs for post-secondary educated workers is driving the development of the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards theoretically shift K-12 pedagogy towards ability development of critical and extended thinking skills, preparing high school graduates for college and career readiness. This literature review explores the reasoning behind the shift to the Common Core State Standards and asks questions regarding the potential ramifications their adoption might have on post-secondary information literacy instruction.

Analyzing Archival Intelligence: A Collaboration Between Library Instruction And Archives, Merinda Kaye Hensley, Benjamin Murphy, Ellen D. Swain Jul 2014

Analyzing Archival Intelligence: A Collaboration Between Library Instruction And Archives, Merinda Kaye Hensley, Benjamin Murphy, Ellen D. Swain

Communications in Information Literacy

Although recent archival scholarship promotes the use of primary sources for developing students' analytical research skills, few studies focus on standards or protocols for teaching or assessing archival instruction. Librarians have designed and tested standards and learning assessment strategies for library instruction and archivists would do well to collaborate with and learn from their experience. This study examines lessons learned from one such collaboration between an instructional services librarian and archivist to evaluate and enhance archival instruction in the University Archives' Student Life and Culture Archival Program (SLC Archives) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. Based on evaluative …

Using Open Access Resources In Data Literacy Instruction: Renewing The Il Curriculum By Aligning It With Changing Needs, Don Macmillen Jul 2014

Using Open Access Resources In Data Literacy Instruction: Renewing The Il Curriculum By Aligning It With Changing Needs, Don Macmillen

Library Instruction West 2014

To align information literacy instruction with changing faculty and student needs, librarians need to expand their conceptions and competencies beyond traditional information sources. In the sciences, this increasingly means integrating the data resources used by researchers into instruction for undergraduate students. Open access repositories allow students to work with more primary data than ever before, but only if they know how and where to look. This presentation will describe the development of classes designed to scaffold student learning in biology across two courses, detailing the long-term collaboration between a librarian and an instructor that now serves over 500 students per …

"Vitalité": Race Science And Jews In France 1850-1914, Kendra Beth Hendrickson Jul 2014

"Vitalité": Race Science And Jews In France 1850-1914, Kendra Beth Hendrickson

Dissertations and Theses

Race science is built on ideas of division and categorization. In the historian's quest to tell the story of race science, certain frameworks have been used that can greatly inhibit our understanding of this fraught topic. The impulse to study race science in the framework of the nation-state has led to certain misconceptions and lends itself to a historical narrative wherein racist concepts stop at artificially imposed borders. In addition, the national framework detracts from the individual's contributions and instead lumps these contributions together on the level of the nation-state, thus opening the door for judgments about whole nations being …

Coel: A Web-Based Chemistry Simulation Framework, Peter Banda, Drew Blount, Christof Teuscher Jul 2014

Coel: A Web-Based Chemistry Simulation Framework, Peter Banda, Drew Blount, Christof Teuscher

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The chemical reaction network (CRN) is a widely used formalism to describe macroscopic behavior of chemical systems. Available tools for CRN modelling and simulation require local access, installation, and often involve local file storage, which is susceptible to loss, lacks searchable structure, and does not support concurrency. Furthermore, simulations are often single-threaded, and user interfaces are non-trivial to use. Therefore there are significant hurdles to conducting efficient and collaborative chemical research. In this paper, we introduce a new enterprise chemistry simulation framework, COEL, which addresses these issues. COEL is the first web-based framework of its kind. A visually pleasing and …

Optical Injection Unlocking For Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy, Gregory A. Bostrom, Andrew L. Rice, Dean B. Atkinson Jul 2014

Optical Injection Unlocking For Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy, Gregory A. Bostrom, Andrew L. Rice, Dean B. Atkinson

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Continuous wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy requires a rapid termination of the injection of light into the cavity to initiate the decay (i.e., ringdown) event. We demonstrate a technique that accomplishes this through pulsed optical injection of a second laser into the main laser, resulting in 20-100 MHz frequency shifts in the otherwise cavity-locked main laser sufficient to create ringdown events at 3.5 kHz. Data on the frequency shift as a function of both main laser current and relative wavelength are presented, 88 well 88 a demonstration that single exponential decays are maintained in the process.

Advances In Aquatic Target Localization With Passive Sonar, John Thomas Gebbie Jul 2014

Advances In Aquatic Target Localization With Passive Sonar, John Thomas Gebbie

Dissertations and Theses

New underwater passive sonar techniques are developed for enhancing target localization capabilities in shallow ocean environments. The ocean surface and the seabed act as acoustic mirrors that reflect sound created by boats or subsurface vehicles, which gives rise to echoes that can be heard by hydrophone receivers (underwater microphones). The goal of this work is to leverage this "multipath" phenomenon in new ways to determine the origin of the sound, and thus the location of the target. However, this is difficult for propeller driven vehicles because the noise they produce is both random and continuous in time, which complicates its …

Exact Tests For Singular Network Data, Ian H. Dinwoodie, Kruti Pandya Jul 2014

Exact Tests For Singular Network Data, Ian H. Dinwoodie, Kruti Pandya

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We propose methodology for exact statistical tests of hypotheses for models of network dynamics. The methodology formulates Markovian exponential families, then uses sequential importance sampling to compute expectations within basins of attraction and within level sets of a sufficient statistic for an over-dispersion model. Comparisons of hypotheses can be done conditional on basins of attraction. Examples are presented.

Folates are tripartite molecules comprising pterin, para-aminobenzoate (PABA), and glutamate moieties, which are essential cofactors involved in DNA and amino acid synthesis. The obligately intracellular Chlamydia species have lost several biosynthetic pathways for essential nutrients which they can obtain from their host but have retained the capacity to synthesize folate. In most bacteria, synthesis of the pterin moiety of folate requires the FolEQBK enzymes, while synthesis of the PABA moiety is carried out by the PabABC enzymes. Bioinformatic analyses reveal that while members of Chlamydia are missing the genes for FolE (GTP cyclohydrolase) and FolQ, which catalyze the initial …

Necessary Condition For Local Quantum Operations And Classical Communication With Extensive Violation By Separable Operations, Scott M. Cohen Jul 2014

Necessary Condition For Local Quantum Operations And Classical Communication With Extensive Violation By Separable Operations, Scott M. Cohen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We give a conceptually simple necessary condition such that a separable quantum operation can be implemented by local operations on subsystems and classical communication between parties (LOCC), a condition which follows from a novel approach to understanding LOCC. This necessary condition applies to all LOCC protocols involving any number of parties and any finite number of rounds of communication. Furthermore, it demonstrates an extremely strong difference between separable operations and LOCC, in that there exist examples of the former for which the condition is extensively violated. More precisely, the violation by separable operations of our necessary condition for LOCC grows …

Analysis Of Landsat Satellite Data To Monitor Water Quality Parameters In Tenmile Lake, Oregon, Michael T. Waxter Jul 2014

Analysis Of Landsat Satellite Data To Monitor Water Quality Parameters In Tenmile Lake, Oregon, Michael T. Waxter

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

The health of North and South Tenmile Lakes in coastal Oregon has declined since the introduction of invasive species of fish and plant life in the 1920s. The lakes are now on the Federal Clean Water Act list of impaired water bodies due, in part, to a lack of dissolved oxygen and Hazardous Algae Blooms (HAB) blooms that occur during June through September. In this report we discuss the possibility of detecting and monitoring these blooms using satellite measurements of water surface color. In-situ measurements obtained from the Tenmile Lakes Basin Partnership were used to calibrate reflectance from the Thematic …

The Transformative Power Of Narrative As A Behavioral Change Communication Tool To Reduce Health Disparities In Cervical Cancer Among Latinas: Global Implications, Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati, Joyee S. Chatterjee, Lauren B. Frank, Sheila T. Murphy, Meghan B. Moran, Lisa N. Werth, Nan Zhao, Paula Amezola De Herrera, Don Mayer, Jeremy Kagan, Dave O'Brien

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women globally. Latinas carry a disproportionate burden of this disease. In the United States, when compared with non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), Latinas endure much higher incidence rates (13.86 vs. 7.70 per 100,000) with mortality rates 1.5 times greater than for non-Hispanic white women . In order to address this disparity, a multidisciplinary team engaged in a transformative study to test if narrative, developed in culturally specific ways as a behavioral change communication tool, works better than non-narrative in increasing knowledge and changing attitudes and behaviors and, if so, why. This …

Evidence-Based Decision Making In Coastal Oregon: Increasing The Effectiveness Of Policy And Management Decisions, Kaitlin Goldsmith Jul 2014

Evidence-Based Decision Making In Coastal Oregon: Increasing The Effectiveness Of Policy And Management Decisions, Kaitlin Goldsmith

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Changing climatic conditions, demographics, and land uses are projected to alter the provisioning of ecosystem services in estuarine, coastal and nearshore marine ecosystems, necessitating mitigation and adaptation policies and management. The current paradigm of siloed research efforts occurring in parallel to, rather than in collaboration with, decision-makers will be insufficient for the rapid responses required to adapt to and mitigate for projected changing conditions in coastal areas. Here, I suggest a different paradigm: one where research begins by engaging decision-makers in the identification of priority research needs (biophysical, economic, and social), and in which researchers analyze and present data in …

Combined Traction And Energy Recovery Motor For Electric Vehicles, James Long, Xin Wang, Claude Kansaku, Brian Moravec Jul 2014

Combined Traction And Energy Recovery Motor For Electric Vehicles, James Long, Xin Wang, Claude Kansaku, Brian Moravec

TREC Final Reports

Electric vehicle manufacturers are looking for ways to optimize energy use for vehicle range extension and reduction of battery capacity. Electric motors have lower efficiencies at very low speed and high torque. This is typically at vehicle launch from standstill, at very low speeds, and during energy regeneration at lower speeds and approaching standstill. The KersTech solution is a breakthrough technology allowing supplement of the electric drive with a hydraulic drive, active in lower speeds ranges, dropping out as the electric motor takes over in its higher efficiency range of operation. The report consists of four parts. Part I presents …
