The S-Aux-O-V-Other Syntagm In Atlantic, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the largest language phylum in the world and the most geographically widespread (Williamson & Blench 2000), Niger-Congo understandably exhibits some variation at all grammatical levels. Basic word order stands as no exception to this generalization, and there have been partisans for both an SOY and an SVO reconstructed word order. Gensler 1994 attempts to reconcile the two by claiming that neither proposal is correct; he suggests that both SOY and SVO are derived from Proto-Niger-Congo *S-AUX-O-V-Other. Because of the pattern's "quirkiness" (being found virtually nowhere else in the world) and because it is so widely attested in geographically widely …

Evolutionary Trajectories, Internet-Mediated Expression, And Language Education, Steven L. Thorne, J. Scott Payne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes the evolution of communication technologies, accompanying transformations in everyday communicative activity, and pedagogical possibilities these tools support in second and foreign language (L2) settings. We begin with an overview of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and uses of the Internet to mediate intercultural communication for purposes of L2 learning. We then describe generational shifts in Internet technologies and their proliferation and uses, with the majority of our efforts focused on contemporary environments such as blogs, wikis, podcasting, device-agnostic forms of CMC, and advances in intelligent computer-assisted language learning (ICALL). Throughout, we engage in a discussion of praxeological fusions …

Attitudes Of Culturally Diverse Parents And Their Beliefs About The Role They Play In Their Children's Education, Suneetha S. De Silva, Sandra Kay Streeter Jan 2005

Attitudes Of Culturally Diverse Parents And Their Beliefs About The Role They Play In Their Children's Education, Suneetha S. De Silva, Sandra Kay Streeter

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This study examined parental involvement in early childhood programs through a combined lens of anthropology, sociology, and pedagogy seeking to understand the intentional and unintentional behaviors of teachers that may create barriers for parental involvement. The study gave voice to parents from culturally diverse backgrounds that are often overlooked. The study recognized the disparity and disconnectedness that seems to exist in communication between the child's most important caregivers, their parents and their teachers. The findings lead to an understanding that over the popular belief that parents are not involved in the education of their children, the lack of participation in …

Do Maps Guide The Way To Npd Success? Theoretical And Practical Aspects Of Knowledge Mapping In Product Development, Antonie J, Jetter Jan 2005

Do Maps Guide The Way To Npd Success? Theoretical And Practical Aspects Of Knowledge Mapping In Product Development, Antonie J, Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

New product development success largely depends on the ability to combine newly acquired information on customer demands and technological options with knowledge that exists within the company. Project organization and high employee turnover, however, make it difficult to be informed about what knowledge is available within the company and to access it successfully. Knowledge maps, a popular concept in present knowledge management, offer a possible solution by ?guiding the way to knowledge?. Their purpose, structure and content varies greatly, as does their ability to capture different aspects of knowledge. This paper investigates the theoretical basis of different types of knowledge …

Working Effectively With And Increasing The In-School Participation Of Parents Whose Cultural And Linguistic Backgrounds Differ From Those Of The Teachers, Steven W. Nourse, Terri Anderson, Thuon Chhay, Vanessa Karlsson, Shawna Moore, Stephen Stewart Jan 2005

Working Effectively With And Increasing The In-School Participation Of Parents Whose Cultural And Linguistic Backgrounds Differ From Those Of The Teachers, Steven W. Nourse, Terri Anderson, Thuon Chhay, Vanessa Karlsson, Shawna Moore, Stephen Stewart

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Working effectively with parents in the school setting is always a challenge. When the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of teachers and parents differ, the challenge becomes more complex. Washington and the nation as a whole are becoming more ethnically and linguistically diverse. Over 90 percent of recent immigrants come from non-English speaking countries, and many of these immigrants arrive with little or no formal education. Minority groups also have higher birth rates, and many native-born ethnic group members do not speak English in the home. These immigration and birth patterns are contributing to the increase in the linguistic diversity of …

A Dialect Study Of Oregon Norms, Lisa Wittenberg Hillyard Oct 2004

A Dialect Study Of Oregon Norms, Lisa Wittenberg Hillyard

Dissertations and Theses

The pioneers and settlers of the Oregon Territory were not of one ilk. They came from various places and brought their separate speech patterns with them. This study sought to identify which major North American English dialect was present in the first half of the 20th century in Oregon. Analysis relied on the descriptions for the Southern, Northern, Midlands, and Western dialects. Some dialect features have acoustic measurements attached to their descriptions, and others do not. The analytical process was based on acoustic measurements for vowel classes and individual tokens, as well as global observations about the place of …

Nurturing The Development Of Teacher Change Agents Within A Teacher Education Program, Barbara Ruben Apr 2004

Nurturing The Development Of Teacher Change Agents Within A Teacher Education Program, Barbara Ruben

Dissertations and Theses

The American education system has two daunting challenges. First, citizens need to be able to function in an interdependent world. Second, public schools' demographics have changed dramatically. Schools are failing to reach many students, particularly children of color and poverty. Schools must change to meet the needs of 21st century students. Without teachers' openness to change, effective educational reform win fail. Schools of education must prepare the next generation of teachers to be change agents who will implement school reform to meet the significantly different requirements of 21st century students.

This study examined how one graduate teacher education …

Money That Burns Like Oil: A Sri Lankan Cultural Logic Of Morality And Agency, Michele Ruth Gamburd Apr 2004

Money That Burns Like Oil: A Sri Lankan Cultural Logic Of Morality And Agency, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

New labor opportunities have drawn Sri Lankan women to work as domestic servants in the Middle East. Many migrants complain that their remittances "burn like oil," disappearing without a trace. The gendered discourse on burning remittances both draws on and contradicts an older cultural system that fetishizes money. The emerging logic provides symbolic resources for women to spend their remittances on advancements for the nuclear family, distancing themselves from other kin. Reconstructability Analysis With Fourier Transforms, Martin Zwick Jan 2004

Reconstructability Analysis With Fourier Transforms, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fourier methods used in two‐ and three‐dimensional image reconstruction can be used also in reconstructability analysis (RA). These methods maximize a variance‐type measure instead of information‐theoretic uncertainty, but the two measures are roughly collinear and the Fourier approach yields results close to that of standard RA. The Fourier method, however, does not require iterative calculations for models with loops. Moreover, the error in Fourier RA models can be assessed without actually generating the full probability distributions of the models; calculations scale with the size of the data rather than the state space. State‐based modeling using the Fourier approach is also …

Live Small And Prosper: The State Of Small Business, John Provo Jan 2004

Live Small And Prosper: The State Of Small Business, John Provo

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

The prospects for small businesses are frequently discussed in politic al circles as metropolitan Portland looks for a path through the current recession. How are small businesses faring in today's metroscape? Addressing this question requires us to consider an even more obvious one? just what is a small business? In our region, it may be a self-employed artist showing at local galleries, a flower stand at a farmer's market employing a few unpaid family members, a professional office providing services to another small business that employs dozens of workers at hourly wages, or a small manufacturer with dozens of highly …

Reconstructability Analysis: Theory And Applications [Editorial Introduction], Martin Zwick, Guangfu Shu, Yi Lin Jan 2004

Reconstructability Analysis: Theory And Applications [Editorial Introduction], Martin Zwick, Guangfu Shu, Yi Lin

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reconstructability analysis (RA) dates back to the pioneering work of Ashby in the mid-1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, RA was the subject of very active research in the systems community. It receded for a time as a focus of activity, but the special issue of the International Journal of General Systems in 1996 on the General Systems Problem Solver and the special IJGS issue in 2000 on Reconstructability Analysis in China marked the renewal of interest in this area. The current volume is part of this resurgence of activity. It collects together papers from the group at Portland State …

A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick Jan 2004

A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Software packages for reconstructability analysis (RA), as well as for related log linear modeling, generally provide a fixed set of functions. Such packages are suitable for end‐users applying RA in various domains, but do not provide a platform for research into the RA methods themselves. A new software system, Occam3, is being developed which is intended to address three goals which often conflict with one another to provide: a general and flexible infrastructure for experimentation with RA methods and algorithms; an easily‐configured system allowing methods to be combined in novel ways, without requiring deep software expertise; and a system which …

A Tale Of The Children: Challenges To Learning And Teaching In Idaho, And Why Some Children Will Be Left Behind, Terry Armstrong

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Teachers are under many stressors from forces seeking to improve education. In Idaho, there are numerous factors beyond educators' control that threaten to undermine success for all children. This article, prepared by eighteen distinguished Idaho public school teachers, outlines variables attendant to school failure for many Idaho children. Teachers need to act as advocates for improving the social climate that impinges on learning.

The Atlantic And Mande Groups Of Niger-Congo: A Study In Contrasts, A Study In Interaction, George Tucker Childs Jan 2004

The Atlantic And Mande Groups Of Niger-Congo: A Study In Contrasts, A Study In Interaction, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents the effects of long-lasting and pervasive contact between two major language groups of Niger-Congo, both of which diverged relatively early from the parent stock. The influence has been asymmetrical: Mande has more deeply influenced Atlantic than vice versa. The details come from two profoundly influenced languages, Kisi, now completely surrounded by Mande, and Mmani, a closely related language, from which all speakers have switched to the Mande language Soussou.

Le contact entre les locuteurs des langues atlantiques et les locuteurs des langues mande est de longue durée et profond. Les deux ensembles sont très différents typologiquement. À …
