The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford
The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford
Dissertations and Theses
During the first two decades of the twentieth century, a new aesthetic in the domestic architecture of middle-class America emerged. A new style of house, the bungalow, was introduced soon after the turn of the century, and within a very few years, became the most popular building style among Americans who were buying moderately-priced homes. The bungalow was a low, horizontal style of house with deep overhanging eaves and large porches, usually built of natural, textured materials. Its floor plan was notable for opening interior space. The research problem addressed in this study was to determine what factors popularized the …

The Biogeography Of Oregon White Oak (Quercus Garryana) In Central Oregon, Robert Allen Voeks
The Biogeography Of Oregon White Oak (Quercus Garryana) In Central Oregon, Robert Allen Voeks
Dissertations and Theses
The study proceeded as follows: The distribution of Quercus garryana was mapped through field reconnaissance. Annual rings from fifteen trees were counted in order to establish age versus trunk diameter ratios. This greatly simplified the dating of trees. Transects were then run through individual groves to determine population age structures. These age structures, along with Q. garryana's distribution patterns, were graphically compared with historic temperature, precipitation, and growing season data. The effect of livestock grazing on oak reproduction was examined. Potential vagility of the species was evaluated by estimating the potential for acorn dispersion by airfall, streams, vertebrates, and …
The Assessment Of Service Providers' Attitudes Toward Working With Older Clients In An Urban Social Service System, Marilyn Diane Petersen
The Assessment Of Service Providers' Attitudes Toward Working With Older Clients In An Urban Social Service System, Marilyn Diane Petersen
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates attitudes toward working with older clients held by service providers in an urban social service system. Four samples were involved: three of providers (Interview Panel, n = 22; Pretest Sample, n = 89; and Survey Sample, n = 428) and one of providers and their older clients (Encounter Sample, n = 52 providers, 147 clients). The first time samples included 13 provider types: hospital doctors, nurses, and nurses aides; in-home nurses and aides; nursing home nurses and aides; mental health practitioners; and income, nutrition, transportation, housing, and interaction personnel. The Encounter Sample included: in-home nurses and aides, …
Preliminary Inventory Of Lifeline Systems And Evaluation Of Seismic Hazards In Reno And Sparks, Nevada, Barbara Priest
Preliminary Inventory Of Lifeline Systems And Evaluation Of Seismic Hazards In Reno And Sparks, Nevada, Barbara Priest
Dissertations and Theses
The Reno-Sparks community is in a seismically hazardous area. Recent research indicates that a Richter 7.0 or greater magnitude earthquake could affect the area. Many of the emergency and essential facilities are situated in dangerous geological locations and are housed in outdated structures which could be severely damaged in the event of a major earthquake. Detailed site evaluations need to be made with respect to location of new structures and of existing building safety. The 1979 Unified Building Code seismic provisions should be adopted without exception; Nevada Revised Statute 278 .160 needs to be revised to require a seismic safety …

Components Integral To The Consumer's Decision-Making Process Regarding The Regional Shopping Centers Of Portland, Oregon, James A. Swanson
Dissertations and Theses
The research problem that the thesis is concerned with is the definition of the components of the "attractiveness" of a regional shopping center as they pertain to the decision-making process of the consumer. Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Spencer Formation In Yamhill And Washington Counties, Oregon, Fathi Ayoub Al-Azzaby
Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Spencer Formation In Yamhill And Washington Counties, Oregon, Fathi Ayoub Al-Azzaby
Dissertations and Theses
The Spencer Formation in Yamhill and Washington Counties, Oregon, is exposed in a narrow belt 27 km long, from 1/4 to 3 km wide and with a maximum thickness of about 400 m. The formation is composed entirely of sandstone with interbedded thin layers of mudstone in the uppermost member. The sedimentary structure and paleoecology indicate a shallow marine depositional environment. The upper member of the Spencer Formation contains more quartz, plagioclase, and hornblende than does the lower member, but K-feldspar is less than that of the lower member. Shallower water conditions for the deposition of the upper member are …
An Observational Study Of Service Provider Client Dyadic Interactions, Joan Dayger Behn
An Observational Study Of Service Provider Client Dyadic Interactions, Joan Dayger Behn
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation reports on the evolution of an observation instrument designed to examine a series of dyadic interactions between service providers and elderly clients. The encounters took place in the physical context of the client's home and under the auspices of two different kinds of urban service agencies. Staff members and elderly clients of In-home Nursing and Interaction agencies participated in the study. The coding system (Service Provider/Client Dyadic Interaction Coding System or SP/CDICS), is comprised of 28 carefully defined and described behavioral categories. The categories were developed through literature reviews and a series of preliminary observations conducted in agencies …
Public Transit And Student Choice : A Survey With Portland State University Students, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Public Transit And Student Choice : A Survey With Portland State University Students, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Dissertations and Theses
Research in urban transportation has been of many facets. Some have emphasized modes and routes while others have attempted to isolate and look at small segments of the transportation market with specific demands. Such segments include workers, recreation riders, and to a less extent, students. In the "journey-to-work" studies, a major finding has been that as income of workers increases, the distance between residence and work-place also increases.
This thesis starts with a series of hypotheses generated as a result of the findings of other studies reviewed in the literature. In testing the hypotheses, variables that are likely to influence …
The Parcelization Of The Open Range, A Conflict In Land Use : Grazing Rights Versus Residential And Recreation Land Sales In Klickitat County, Washington, Dennis A. Olson
The Parcelization Of The Open Range, A Conflict In Land Use : Grazing Rights Versus Residential And Recreation Land Sales In Klickitat County, Washington, Dennis A. Olson
Dissertations and Theses
The threefold question researched herein is: (1) What are the extent and potential economic consequences of land parcelization in Klickitat County?, (2)What are the political and social costs of parcelization?, and (3) What measures today are, or could be, used to ameliorate the land use conflict? These are answered by studying the various aspects of the problem, including the historic land use change, legal mechanisms which regulate livestock grazing and land parcelization; taxation; the economic-effect upon livestock production; crime and social conflict; costs to county services; and environmental impacts. The geography of the change itself is depicted on several maps.

Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett
Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett
Dissertations and Theses
The emergence of a complex and highly urbanized industrial society has inspired great study of urbanization and urban phenomena by social scientists. Unfortunately, most social scientists study urbanology within the relatively narrow confines of their particular disciplines. Sociologists concentrate on urban phenomena arising out of human-group relationships, while political scientists concentrate on units of urban government and intergovernmental relations. Likewise, economists study urbanology from a market perspective while geographers tend to concentrate on urban location theory and historians are concerned about the history of urbanization. Moreover, urban planners and research specialists are principally practitioners who receive and attempt to apply …
