Report On Feasibility Of A Geographic Information System For The Central City Citizen Planning Committees, Kenneth Dueker, George Mason

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

In September 1984 PSU was contracted to demonstrate the utility of an interactive graphic database system. A project was done using LANDTRAK* to determine which records from the tax roll were inside the Central City Planning Area. This information provides a starting point for o parcel based information system for the Central City Planning Project. This report consists of a design for a geographic information system for the Central City Planning Area that may serve as a prototype for a broader geographic information system for the City.

Development And Application Of A Water Budget Model For Lake Level Fluctuation, Goose Lake Basin, Oregon-California, Douglas Daniel Nebert Feb 1985

Development And Application Of A Water Budget Model For Lake Level Fluctuation, Goose Lake Basin, Oregon-California, Douglas Daniel Nebert

Dissertations and Theses

A water budget model was developed to estimate year-end lake volumes of Goose Lake, Oregon-California, to determine whether an accurate reconstruction of lake volumes/levels could be made with several synthesized or partial volumetric components. Components evaluated were the lake level/volume observations, precipitation, streamflow, and evaporation during the data-rich study period, 1946 to 1975. By regressing estimated year-end volumes against actual volumes (using actual volumes as the input at the beginning of each year) a correlation coefficient of 0.97 was obtained. By letting the series' year-end volumes be substituted for the following years' antecedent volumes a systematic error was created, identical …

Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah Feb 1985

Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ethnographic data from the Nchumuru settlement of Wiae, Kete-Krachi District, northern Volta Region, Ghana, are used to examine the manner in which earth-walled houses in Nchumuru traditional settlements are transferred from the systemic to the archeological record. Archeological survey and excavation of two early Nchumuru sites were conducted to establish the extent to which the observed cultural and natural processes of house and settlement development could help identify the location and distribution of prehistoric structural features. The result was the almost complete reconstruction of the location and distribution of structural features at one of these sites. Knowledge of the mechanisms …

Municipal Water Use: An Oregon Case Study, Ibrahim M. Shukri Jan 1985

Municipal Water Use: An Oregon Case Study, Ibrahim M. Shukri

Dissertations and Theses

There are two approaches to estimating the quantity of water required in an urban area: the requirements approach and the economic approach. The requirements approach extrapolates from past growth trends of the urban area. Water consumption and population are extrapolated into the future using a trend line based on prior years; the future requirements of the area are determined according to past experience. This approach served well when water was essentially a free good. But now that it is an economic good that requires production, the requirements approach tends to overestimate water requirements. The alternative is the economic approach which …

Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regime Of Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon, William Vandewater Clement Jul 1984

Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regime Of Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon, William Vandewater Clement

Dissertations and Theses

The Johnson Creek watershed, Portland, Oregon, has undergone urbanization at an increasing rate. Excessive flooding has occurred in the lower portions of the watershed, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million dollars worth of flood losses annually. In attempts to mitigate the flooding damages millions of dollars have been spent to channelize the creek, and over 200 thousand dollars has been spent during the last 20 years on preliminary feasibility studies alone.

The author saw a need to verify that there has been a change in the rainfall-runoff relationships in the upper Johnson Creek basin since 1941 and to quantify this …

Evaluating Urban Containment Programs, Arthur C. Nelson Jan 1984

Evaluating Urban Containment Programs, Arthur C. Nelson

Dissertations and Theses

Urban containment programs may be evaluated in terms of a theory unifying contributions from the economic, geographic and political science disciplines. The unified theory shows that successful programs will segment the urban-rural land market, remove speculative use value of rural land, and result in the urban land market valuing greenbelt proximity as an amenity. A general model to test urban containment programs against the unified theory is developed and then modified for application to Salem, Oregon. Results are fourfold. First, a gap in the locus of urban and rural land values at the UGB indicates that segmentation of the urban-rural …

Fringe Area Growth In Metropolitan Portland: An Analysis Of Space-Time Variations In Residential Housing And Land Conversion, 1970-1980, Sheku Gibril Kamara Jan 1984

Fringe Area Growth In Metropolitan Portland: An Analysis Of Space-Time Variations In Residential Housing And Land Conversion, 1970-1980, Sheku Gibril Kamara

Dissertations and Theses

Urban ecological problems have hitherto been addressed using one of two major approaches. The first has a social impetus directed at ethnic, economic and family characteristics and their relationships with the spatial distribution of urban residential housing. The second approach emphasizes the influence of the physical environment and the services available to subareas. The sociological method has had much more attention in modeling applications than the physical analytic technique. This study adopts the physical approach with a focus that is emphatic on infrastructural factors and land attributes, and their influence on the differential rates of fringe area residential growth in …

Research And Development Effects On Economic Growth: Implications For The Portland Smsa, James G. Strathman Mar 1983

Research And Development Effects On Economic Growth: Implications For The Portland Smsa, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Promoting a high- technology economic base has been widely adopted as a regional development "policy for the 80's." To this point, however, it appears that little consideration has been paid to questions regarding the feasibility of this policy as it relates to structural and locational characteristics of the regional economy. This paper will discuss those attributes of the regional economy that typically contribute to the expansion of high- technology activities, with particular attention paid to expansion potential in the Portland SMSA. High-technology activities are defined according to product cycle theory, and the attributes of the regional economy are examined with …

The Introduction Of European And Asian Cultural Materials On The Alaskan And Northwest Coasts Before 1800, Herbert Kyle Beals Feb 1983

The Introduction Of European And Asian Cultural Materials On The Alaskan And Northwest Coasts Before 1800, Herbert Kyle Beals

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis concerns the introduction of exogenous cultural materials among the native inhabitants of the Alaskan and Northwest coasts prior to the and of the 18th century. It is an investigation of the sources of these materials and the manner and chronology of their introduction. The research is based primarily on data drawn from accounts of native life by explorers and fur traders who visited the coasts of northwestern North America in the 18th century. These accounts are supplemented by ethnologic and archaeologic data collected by anthropologists in the 19th and 20th centuries.
