Crossover Of Supervisors' Perceptions Of Co-Worker Support To Employees' Well-Being, Shalene Joyce Allen
Crossover Of Supervisors' Perceptions Of Co-Worker Support To Employees' Well-Being, Shalene Joyce Allen
Dissertations and Theses
This study expands scholarly understanding of the positive impact of supervisors' perceptions of support on employee work-family and well-being experiences. Specifically, this study examines the role of resource-based positive crossover from supervisors' perceptions of co-worker support behavior to their employees. The current research draws on Systems Theory to understand the context, Conservation of Resources Theory to understand the type of resource purported to position individual resource gains, and crossover-spillover theory to understand the process through which resources crossover from supervisor to employee. Based on prior theory, this dissertation investigates a positive crossover effect of supervisors' perceptions of co-worker support at …
Openings And Closings In Human-Human Versus Human-Spoken Dialogue System Conversations, Judit Dombi, Tetyana Sydorenko, Veronika Timpe-Laughlin
Openings And Closings In Human-Human Versus Human-Spoken Dialogue System Conversations, Judit Dombi, Tetyana Sydorenko, Veronika Timpe-Laughlin
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although conversation openings and closings are ritualized speech acts (House & Kádár, 2023), they do require interactional work (Schegloff, 1986). Thus, they are important elements of interactional competence (Roever, 2022) and have been studied extensively in L2 interactions, including various types of technology-mediated communication contexts (e.g., Abe & Roever, 2019; 2020). However, to our knowledge, no research on openings and closings has been conducted with newer technologies such as spoken dialogue systems (SDS). To address this gap, this study compares conversation openings and closings across two modalities: a role-play with a human interlocutor versus with a fully automated agent. We …

Prosodic Analysis Of Wh-Indeterminate Questions In L2 Korean, Jung In Lee
Prosodic Analysis Of Wh-Indeterminate Questions In L2 Korean, Jung In Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Wh-indeterminate questions in Korean are potentially ambiguous due to the limited use of morpho-syntactic markers. When an explicit morpheme indicating the question type is not used, the disambiguation of the question relies, primarily, on prosodic cues. Drawing from previous studies of L1 Korean, this study examines the production and perception of intonation patterns of English L1 learners of Korean for wh- and yes-no questions in Korean. That examination allows speculation on potential L1 influence in the learners' production. Five English L1 learners of Korean who received formal instruction in Korean at a U.S. university completed a production and perception test …

Dissertations and Theses
Archaeologists commonly evaluate National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for precontact sites in Cultural Resource Management archaeology under Criterion D. This focus on Criterion D can create the false paradigm that precontact sites are only significant by virtue of their information potential. This paper explores precontact sites in the Tualatin River Basin in northwestern Oregon and identifies some key deficiencies in the ways those sites are recorded and documented by archaeologists. This paper then discusses the development of a geodatabase of site attributes and a significance model with contributions and feedback from relevant parties and Tribal representatives.
The geodatabase …
Isolation Of Gametophytic Selection And Selective Embryo Abortion In Mimulus Guttatus, Desmond C. Willson
Isolation Of Gametophytic Selection And Selective Embryo Abortion In Mimulus Guttatus, Desmond C. Willson
University Honors Theses
A lack of genomic studies examining gametophytic selection (GS) and selective embryo abortion (SEA)--which occur during the reproduction of angiosperms--leaves questions regarding the adaptive and evolutionary effects of these processes. Analyzing deviations from Mendelian segregation offers an avenue for identifying loci targeted by GS and SEA, and their contributions to purging of genetic load. However, other selective processes such as meiotic drive and cytonuclear interactions, as well as pollen and ovule abortion, can cause distortion. To distinguish the effects of GS and SEA from other causes of distortion, we will perform reciprocal crosses between highly homozygous and highly heterozygous individuals …

The Impact Of Western Beauty Standards On The Identity Formation And Self-Perception Of Young Latinx Women, Pricila Orduno
The Impact Of Western Beauty Standards On The Identity Formation And Self-Perception Of Young Latinx Women, Pricila Orduno
University Honors Theses
Young Latinx women are experiencing an impasse resulting from the conflicting beauty standards of their two cultures. While women are experiencing dissatisfaction with their bodies all over the world, Latinx women are stuck not fitting their cultural or domestic standards. Previous research has found that young Latinx women, born to Mexican parents, don’t feel like they fit into either of their cultures because the ideal in the U.S. is pushing thinness while the Mexican ideal is pushing curvy yet thin. This lack of feeling as if they belong is causing a negative self-perception of themselves and causing a deep dissatisfaction …

University Honors Theses
The red-eared slider is considered one of the most ubiquitous freshwater turtles globally. Several key ecological advantages and life history traits of this species jointly impact growth rates and survivorship of native freshwater turtles where sympatry occurs. Evaluation of current management actions for red-eared slider turtles is limited, resulting in a paucity of information to guide management for the species and conservation of declining native freshwater turtles. We used previously collected mark-recapture and removal sampling data from sites with sympatric populations of red-eared slider and western painted turtles. We examined the effects of control (trapping and removal) of red-eared sliders …

State-Sanctioned Slavery: The Political Economy Of Prison Labor, Avneet Sidhu
State-Sanctioned Slavery: The Political Economy Of Prison Labor, Avneet Sidhu
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores the interconnected relationship between the political institution of government and economic development with a particular focus on the United States Constitution’s role in explicitly legalizing coerced carceral labor and the direct impact this has on various economic aspects. The Thirteenth Amendment of the Constitution has long been hailed as a guiding light of freedom and justice, and yet, still to this day, it contains a paradoxical loophole that explicitly permits involuntary servitude as punishment for crime. This exemption has long been exploited in order to perpetuate a system of state-sanctioned slavery, in which incarcerated laborers are exploited …
