Mobile Augmented Reality And Language-Related Episodes, Tetyana Sydorenko, John Hellermann, Steven L. Thorne, Vanessa Howe
Mobile Augmented Reality And Language-Related Episodes, Tetyana Sydorenko, John Hellermann, Steven L. Thorne, Vanessa Howe
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Applications of locative media (e.g., place‐based mobile augmented reality [AR]) are used in various educational content areas and have been shown to provide learners with valuable opportunities for investigation‐based learning, location‐situated social and collaborative interaction, and embodied experience of place (Squire, 2009; Thorne & Hellermann, 2017; Zheng et al., 2018). Mobile locative media applications’ value for language learning, however, remains underinvestigated. To address this lacuna, this study employed the widely used construct of language‐related episodes (LREs; Swain & Lapkin, 1998) as a unit of analysis to investigate language learning through participation in a mobile AR game. Analysis of videorecorded interactions …
Brand Logo Shape And Brand Personality, Kyle P. Gold
Brand Logo Shape And Brand Personality, Kyle P. Gold
University Honors Theses
Brand logos are a critical element of brand image equity in the process of visually conveying brand values to a consumer base. While previous studies have discussed logo design elements like color, typography, and complexity on their ability to convey brand attributes - little research has been done on logo shape. This study examines the relationship between brand logo shape - that of the geometric outline of a logo - and the concept of brand personality. To accomplish this, stimuli was created and presented via survey to test if consumers could recognize brand personality factors from a series of designed …
Simultaneous Bilingual Middle School Students Becoming Biliterate: What Do Students Think About Their Biliteracy As Taught Through The "Bridge" Strategy In A Humanities Dual Language/Immersion Class?, Alma Lucinda Diaz-Philipp
Simultaneous Bilingual Middle School Students Becoming Biliterate: What Do Students Think About Their Biliteracy As Taught Through The "Bridge" Strategy In A Humanities Dual Language/Immersion Class?, Alma Lucinda Diaz-Philipp
Dissertations and Theses
In response to the increasing number of United States school students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds at all grade levels, often called "simultaneous bilinguals," the U.S. school districts are opening schools that offer bilingual instruction. One instructional strategy that seems promising is the "Bridge," where students contrast and connect the literacy skills learned in one language to the literacy skills in their other language. An underlying component of learning a language is student attitude and motivation to learn. Research also seems to indicate that student attitude and motivation toward biliteracy can affect their achievement. There seems to be a …
A Present-Situation Analysis And Needs Assessment Of Latinx Workers In The Portland Fast-Food Industry: A Study Of Their Employment Journeys & Job-Related Language Needs, Livia Z. Lichtenstein-Hershman
A Present-Situation Analysis And Needs Assessment Of Latinx Workers In The Portland Fast-Food Industry: A Study Of Their Employment Journeys & Job-Related Language Needs, Livia Z. Lichtenstein-Hershman
University Honors Theses
This case study illustrates the employment journeys and experiences of three Latinx fast-food industry service workers. Analyses of in-depth interviews reveals while participants share comparable employment histories, they also demonstrate differences in regard to the paths to management they have experienced, and their level of language confidence at work. All participants in this study have been offered and have declined management positions. First, this analysis suggests there is a myriad of reasons besides a lack of English language skills regarding why Latinx fast food restaurant workers may not assume management positions. These reasons include participants lacking the following: time to …
Very High Frequency Bipolar Junction Transistor Frequency Multiplier Drive Network Design And Analysis, Daniel Dale Schaeffer
Very High Frequency Bipolar Junction Transistor Frequency Multiplier Drive Network Design And Analysis, Daniel Dale Schaeffer
Dissertations and Theses
The function of a frequency multiplier is verbatim -- a frequency multiplier is a circuit that takes a signal of particular frequency at the input and produces harmonic multiples of the input signal's frequency at the output. Their use is widespread throughout history, primarily in the application of frequency synthesis. When implemented as a part of a large system, a chain of multipliers can be used to synthesize multiple reference signals from a single high-performance reference oscillator.
Frequency multiplier designs use a variety of nonlinear devices and topologies to achieve excitation of harmonics. This thesis will focus on the design …
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Dissertations and Theses
Abraded and crumpled encryption allows communication software such as messaging platforms to ensure privacy for their users while still allowing for some investigation by law enforcement. Crumpled encryption ensures that each decryption is costly and prevents law enforcement from performing mass decryption of messages. Abrasion ensures that only large organizations like law enforcement are able to access any messages. The current abrasion construction uses public key parameters such as prime numbers which makes the abrasion scheme difficult to analyze and allows possible backdoors. In this thesis, we introduce a new abrasion construction which uses hash functions to avoid the problems …

Necessary Conditions For Stability Of Vehicle Formations, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco
Necessary Conditions For Stability Of Vehicle Formations, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco
Dissertations and Theses
Necessary conditions for stability of coupled autonomous vehicles in R are established in this thesis. The focus is on linear arrays with decentralized vehicles, where each vehicle interacts with only a few of its neighbors. Decentralized means that there is no central authority governing the motion. Instead, each vehicle registers only velocity and position relative to itself and bases its acceleration only on those data. Explicit expressions are obtained for necessary conditions for asymptotic stability in the cases that a system consists of a periodic arrangement of two or three different types of vehicles, i.e. configurations as follows: ...2-1-2-1 or …

Can Churches Change A Neighborhood? A Census Tract, Multilevel Analysis Of Churches And Neighborhood Change, David E. Kresta
Can Churches Change A Neighborhood? A Census Tract, Multilevel Analysis Of Churches And Neighborhood Change, David E. Kresta
Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the role of local churches in neighborhood change, analyzing the relationship between Christian churches and changes in household median incomes from 1990 to 2010 in the census tract in which each church is located. Based on a nationally representative sample of churches from 2006 and 2012, the study uses hierarchical linear modeling and statistical matching techniques to analyze how key church characteristics such as social service involvement, social capital generation, residential patterns of attendees, and demographic composition are related to changes in neighborhoods. Two primary research questions were addressed: 1) How have patterns of church location changed …
From Bird-Woman To Mermaid: The Shifting Image Of The Medieval Siren, Claire Cannell
From Bird-Woman To Mermaid: The Shifting Image Of The Medieval Siren, Claire Cannell
Student Research Symposium
During the Middle Ages, the siren transforms from its classical status as grotesque bird-woman into an alluring mermaid. A female monster, the siren represents what is considered monstrous in women. I plan to examine the unstable image of the siren in order to better understand the religious and social status of the medieval European woman. The siren is contextualized among contemporary secular images of female sexuality and the writings of religious authorities such as Leander of Seville, who wrote that all women were either nuns or sirens. I plan to analyze the implications of the nun-siren binary created by Leander …

Student Research Symposium
Questions:
Will the N400 ERP be observed when participants read word pairs that are either related (semantically, causally, hierarchically, or associatively) or unrelated?
Will a replication of a study using word pairs with varying degrees of relatedness produce similar results to the model study in terms of N400 latency and amplitude?
Can results from a robust, easily-recognizable ERP be used to validate methods for the discovery of more subtle ERP’s?
Hypotheses:
It is expected that our results will mirror the findings of our model study, revealing significant negative-going neural activity between 200 and 500ms after seeing the stimulus. We anticipate …

“It Lurks In The Saying, Not What’S Being Said”: Possible Worlds Theory And Gender Performativity In Marina Carr’S Low In The Dark, Andie Madsen, Susan Reese
Student Research Symposium
Low in the Dark by Irish playwright Marina Carr is an absurdist play that focuses heavily on concepts of gender as performance. It does so mainly through role-playing scenes in which two same-gender characters reenact a heterosexual relationship. These scenes can be tied to Marie-Laure Ryan’s conceptions of the four kinds of textual alternative possible worlds (TAPWs) within possible worlds theory: fantasy, wish, obligation, and knowledge. An analysis of the play’s role-playing scenes in conjunction with gender performativity and these four types of TAPW reveals the constructed-ness of gender norms within the work, which further calls into question a strictly …

This study aims to identify the extent and nature of available resources in inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitation settings for speech-language assessment and treatment in Spanish-speaking adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and acquired brain injury (ABI) in the Portland Metro area. Identification of lack of resources could be used for future improvements in resources. To investigate this, a web-based survey was answered by 25 participants via Qualtrics. Participants were speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the Portland metro area who have treated bilingual / multilingual clients in the past 1-2 years.
Results are presented descriptively to answer four research questions: (1) Have …
Attrition Effects In Mandarin-English Bilinguals Of Varying Proficiency, Sarah Elkinton, Jared Forman, Diana Yuen, Carolyn Quam
Attrition Effects In Mandarin-English Bilinguals Of Varying Proficiency, Sarah Elkinton, Jared Forman, Diana Yuen, Carolyn Quam
Student Research Symposium
Previous research has shown that English dominance caused an attrition effect in tone processing in native Mandarin speakers (Quam & Creel, 2017). There were two explanations offered, either tones are more prone to attrition because of their unique mental representation, or English dominant bilinguals are able to recruit English perceptual categories to process the Mandarin vowels. This research project is a verification and expansion of that research investigating how dominance in English, a non-tonal language, impacts lexical tonal processing in Mandarin for Mandarin-English bilinguals. This research project is testing the robustness of this effect in two ways. The first is …
Restoring Eden: The Role Of Christianity On Environmental Conservation, A Case Of Karatu District, Arusha, Tanzania, Taylor Allen
Restoring Eden: The Role Of Christianity On Environmental Conservation, A Case Of Karatu District, Arusha, Tanzania, Taylor Allen
Student Research Symposium
In order for environmental conservation to be effective among citizens, it must have a method of relating to their everyday values. Developing countries account for the majority of bio-diversity hotspot areas and thus are important to maintain sustainable development. Due to most of these countries following an organized religion, predominantly Christian, an alternative method of conservation may be successful to motivate citizens to participate in conservation efforts. In order for this method to be successful, members of the congregation must agree that there is a religious obligation to care for the environment. For Christianity this obligation is discussed by the …

Jewish Mussar And Confucian Self-Cultivation, Martin Zwick
Jewish Mussar And Confucian Self-Cultivation, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper briefly explores similarities between two traditions of ethical practice: Jewish Mussar and Confucian self-cultivation. There are of course also significant differences. Judaism is God-centric while Confucianism is human-centric, but Mussar’s psychological orientation makes it a relatively humanistic aspect of Judaism. Also, Confucianism has a notion of Heaven and sees human moral behavior as reflecting heavenly virtues; Ching describes Confucianism as “lay spirituality.” Both traditions take as an ideal type someone who is both a moral person and a scholar. In their views on human nature neither posited a blank slate. In Judaism, there is a “good yetser” and …
Turning Herbage Into Money: The Economic Inducement And Scientific Legacy Of 18th And 19th Century Livestock Improvement In England, Ann M. Ramsey
Turning Herbage Into Money: The Economic Inducement And Scientific Legacy Of 18th And 19th Century Livestock Improvement In England, Ann M. Ramsey
Young Historians Conference
This paper traces the development and legacy of livestock improvement by selective breeding in 18th and 19th century England, focusing on the contributions and economic motivations of Robert Bakewell (1725-1795). Bakewell notably impacted the English livestock industry by popularizing selective inbreeding techniques, amplifying preferred characteristics like proportions of edible meat to develop his own breeds of sheep and cattle. His efforts, seemingly motivated by economic hopes alone, influenced the work of Central European sheep breeders. They applied more scientific language to selective breeding, adding to an accumulating body of knowledge that would establish the context for Gregor Mendel and Charles …
Classical Music From The Late 19th Century To The Early 20th Century: The Creation Of A Distinct American Musical Sound, Ashley M. Christensen
Classical Music From The Late 19th Century To The Early 20th Century: The Creation Of A Distinct American Musical Sound, Ashley M. Christensen
Young Historians Conference
The paper talks about American classical music through the late 19th century and the changes made going into the 20th century. It examines the sheet music from the era and the shift away from traditional European tonal style to a redefined American sound. The thesis of the paper is that the turmoil and upheaval of the Civil War and following era was the catalyst for the creation of a new American sound in classical music.
Aristocracy And Agriculture: How Vergil’S "Georgics" Inspired A Wave Of Agrarianism And Imperialism, Isabel M. Lickey
Aristocracy And Agriculture: How Vergil’S "Georgics" Inspired A Wave Of Agrarianism And Imperialism, Isabel M. Lickey
Young Historians Conference
Georgics, written by Vergil in 29 B.C., though on its surface about labor and agricultural, uncovered deeper thought about the politics of its time period. When a prominent English poet, John Dryden, translated the Georgics in 1697, it had a profound effect upon English society. It soared to popularity, and introduced the field of agrarian science to the upper class, while at the same time inspiring a wave of similar agricultural poems. At the same, time, the ideas extolled in the Georgics about the necessity of labour to make land purposeful helped justify British colonization of America. Though Georgics was …
Searching For Medieval Lesbianism And "Lesbianistic Intimacy" Within Asexual Christian Religious Orders Of The Middle Ages: G. Unice Sue Rose And C. Super Mel Et Favum Dulciori, Isabelle Paylor
Young Historians Conference
From an era characterized by piety and a fierce hostility towards sexuality, the field of medieval lesbianism asserts that evidence of medieval 'lesbians' exist within women’s music, art, texts, and literature despite the phallocentric and theological refutations of medieval theologians and historians. Yet, even within the highly controversial and complex field, clerical lesbianism is "twice marginalized" and egregiously simplified. Where does evidence of medieval women-identified relationships within religious orders exist, what constitutes this religious lesbianism, and how should scholarship discuss medieval lesbianism? This paper answers these questions first analyzing the anonymous, 12th century love-letters G. unice sue rose and C. …
The Diaspora Of Iranian Intellectuals In The 20th Century: Emigration And The Rise In Academic Internationalism, Skylar M. Deitch
The Diaspora Of Iranian Intellectuals In The 20th Century: Emigration And The Rise In Academic Internationalism, Skylar M. Deitch
Young Historians Conference
From the Achaemenid dynasty of the fifth century B.C.E., to the conquest of Persia by Mongol forces of Genghis Khan in the tenth century C.E., the Iranian monarchy withstood several political interventions, both domestic and foreign. The Iranian Cultural Revolution of 1979, however, toppled the longstanding Pahlavi dynasty of the nation, and inaugurated a democratic republic. The Revolution’s origins on university campuses and in the living rooms of the middle class continue to engage historical focus as a revolution sparked by the public. Students and professors alike who felt that the traditionalist regime persecuted a modernizing Iran, united in protest. …
Robespierre: A Self-Destructed Revolutionary, Sophie M. Johnson
Robespierre: A Self-Destructed Revolutionary, Sophie M. Johnson
Young Historians Conference
The French Revolution’s infamously radical Reign of Terror rallied revolutionaries and quelled dissenters, all under the justification that the “republic of virtue” mandated protection. The Terror’s enigmatic Jacobin figurehead, Maximilien Robespierre, undeniably embodied the Enlightenment, egalitarian thought that provoked the revolution in 1789. Nonetheless, his resolute view of virtue and tyrannical tendencies debased a 1792 republic already overcome by factionalism and unnecessary bloodshed. His extreme rhetoric and public unpopularity only further blackened his image, raising the question of his legitimacy to his colleagues and fellow Jacobins. This paper asserts that while Robespierre acted in the name of the “Republic,” his …
The Examination Of Inconsistencies Among The Misconception, Ideology, And Reality Of The Punishment Of Male And Female Adulterers Through Letters And Court Records, Julie Ho Lely
Young Historians Conference
Due to the misogynistic roots of history, many scholars believe that female adulterers were punished more harshly than male adulterers; however, the wholistic examination of religion, gender norms, and medieval law reveal that despite the church’s ideology of equal condemnation of male and female adulterers, in reality, male adulterers were punished more frequently than women. By addressing the misconceptions, ideologies, and realities relating to adultery, this enables us to comprehend how social norms, law, and religion mutually influence each other while also revealing inconsistencies between the different fields. This paper focuses on adultery cases in the medieval times and examines …
Depiction And Function Of Madness In Elizabethan And Jacobean Literature, Yeiji Seo
Depiction And Function Of Madness In Elizabethan And Jacobean Literature, Yeiji Seo
Young Historians Conference
Since the ancient times of Israel, Greece, and Rome, people with mental illnesses have been regarded as different from others in society. This paper aims to analyze the motives of authors of medical and dramatic texts of Elizabethan and Jacobean literature in regards to mental illness by specifically observing William Shakespeare’s King Lear and Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy. This paper also considers the views of other scholars of the field to compose a complete insight on Shakespeare and Burton’s goals in depicting mental illness and finally advocates further research and understanding to positively contribute towards disability reform today.
From Mantra To Prose: The Influence Of The Mundaka Upanishad On Western Poetry And Writing, Walter B. Greene
From Mantra To Prose: The Influence Of The Mundaka Upanishad On Western Poetry And Writing, Walter B. Greene
Young Historians Conference
Written sometime between 300 and 100 BCE, the Indian text known as the Mundaka Upanishad contains some of the earliest philosophical inquiries into the concepts of suffering, the self, rebirth, and humanity’s place in the universe. This paper examines the influence of the Mundaka Upanishad and argues for the value of its study, addressing how the text offers historians a valuable opportunity to look into some of the most influential ideas behind Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Indian schools of thought. This paper also examines the cross-cultural influence of the text, tracing its diffusion from India and its influence on contemporary …
