Wto "Chapeau" Jurisprudence And Its Discontent, Julia Y. Qin
Wto "Chapeau" Jurisprudence And Its Discontent, Julia Y. Qin
Florida Journal of International Law
This Article examines WTO’s jurisprudence on the introductory clause (the “chapeau”) of the general exceptions in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). These general exceptions allow WTO members to depart from GATT and GATS obligations in order to pursue specific nontrade policies, such as public health and the environment. In practice, it has proven difficult for countries to invoke the general exceptions successfully. One major obstacle has been the chapeau requirement of nondiscrimination, which, under jurisprudence developed by WTO’s Appellate Body (AB), has become the final barrier for the …
Sex Differences And Cytokine Profiles In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ella Margaret Bartley Miss
Sex Differences And Cytokine Profiles In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ella Margaret Bartley Miss
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterised by persistent inflammation, joint destruction, and notable differences in prevalence and severity between sexes. Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), are well established mediators of RA pathology. Although extensive research has elucidated their pathological roles, the influence of sex on cytokine profiles and RA outcomes remains undefined.
This review examines preclinical and clinical studies analysing sex-specific cytokine responses in RA. Findings reveal that female patients and experimental models exhibit higher concentrations of pro-inflammatory mediators, with oestrogen and androgen signalling playing relevant …

Emancipation, Decolonization, And Gender In The Context Of African Integration, Luwam Dirar
Emancipation, Decolonization, And Gender In The Context Of African Integration, Luwam Dirar
Florida Journal of International Law
The 1960s institutionalization and formalization of Africa’s continental integration was a manifestation of the ontological fragility of the concept of emancipation in the African context. As a concept, continental emancipation excluded concerns of women and formalized the divorce between decolonization and racial domination on the one hand and social emancipatory movements on the other. This divorce was contrary to the expectation of women who sought the end of colonial subjugation as a turning point for women’s emancipation from not only colonial and racial domination but also from social oppression. This Article argues that the continental emancipation project betrayed the hopes …

From Innocent Sharing To Harmful And Unintended Exposure: Balancing Parental Rights And Children's Digital Privacy Rights, Perla Khattar
Florida Journal of International Law
In the digital age, “sharenting”—the practice of parents sharing details of their children’s lives online—has become ubiquitous, blurring the lines between innocent sharing on social media and harmful exposure on the dark web. This Article delves into the complexities of balancing parental rights with children’s digital privacy rights, framed against the backdrop of a society increasingly reliant on social media for community and validation. By examining the legal and societal impacts of sharenting, it highlights the urgent need for legal frameworks that both respect parental autonomy and protect children’s online privacy. This Article proposes a multifaceted approach to address this …
Corporate Manslaughter, Human Rights And Sustainable Development: An Appraisal Of Australian Industrial Killing Laws, S. M. Solaiman
Corporate Manslaughter, Human Rights And Sustainable Development: An Appraisal Of Australian Industrial Killing Laws, S. M. Solaiman
Florida Journal of International Law
The right to life is a universally recognized human right, which is the utmost critical right of any human being residing anywhere in the world with any identity. Despite this, many workers are getting killed while working for a living. The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that a total of 2.3 million workers currently die from work-related injuries and diseases worldwide every year, numbering over 6,000 deaths every single day, and another 160 million breadwinners suffer from nonfatal diseases. They are being killed largely with impunity, although they are the mainspring of development, which cannot be sustainable without protecting workers …

Hiring Out-Of-Field Teachers In Urban Title I Schools In Georgia, Lakeshia Pruitt Dixon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Urban Title I schools commonly experience teacher shortages, prompting principals to hire teachers to teach content areas for which they are not certified. The problem addressed in this study was that 8% of the teachers within a large urban school district in Georgia were teaching out-of-field. Guided by Elmore’s conceptual framework of knowledge, skills, and dispositions, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the factors contributing to principals’ decisions to recommend hiring out-of-field teachers in urban Title I schools in Georgia and to examine the support available for those teachers to meet certification requirements. Semistructured interviews were …

Belonging's Influence On Volunteer Motivation In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Adam Stockton
Belonging's Influence On Volunteer Motivation In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Adam Stockton
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Nonprofit organizations often overlook psychological belonging as a driver of volunteer retention and recruitment (Hurt, 2025; Mochin, 2022). The purpose of this qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study was to explore how a sense of belonging influenced the intrinsic motivation of nine adults volunteering with a faith-based nonprofit organization in the southern United States. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using IPA best practices to identify themes from participants' experiences. The study was grounded in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, self-determination theory, and organizational identification theory—frameworks that describe how individuals connect personal values and identity to the values and …

Building Adaptive Capacity In Community Engaged Nonprofits, Lena Hatchett, Kenneth E. Steinkruger, Laundette P. Jones
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Nonprofit organizations face ongoing challenges related to uncertain funding, staff burnout, and increasing community needs. This article describes adaptive capacity as a proactive form of resilience that can help nonprofits prepare for unexpected challenges before they occur. Drawing on examples from a small community-engaged nonprofit, the current article presented activities and tools for strengthening adaptive capacity through both longer-term capacity-building practices and everyday organizational decisions. We used the McKinsey 7S framework to organize adaptive capacity opportunities across strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, style, and staff. The examples suggest that, despite unanticipated challenges, community-engaged nonprofits may strengthen resilience by adopting …

Should We Flee? The Mortality And Economic Impacts Of Hurricane Evacuation Orders, Lucas Kaplan
Should We Flee? The Mortality And Economic Impacts Of Hurricane Evacuation Orders, Lucas Kaplan
Center for Policy Research
I estimate the mortality and county-level regional economic impacts of hurricane evacuation orders using a novel instrumental variables framework. Relative to similarly affected but non-evacuated areas, evacuated counties experience fewer deaths but lower personal income, employment, and business establishments into the second year following the storm, likely stemming from delayed returns in wealthier neighborhoods. I then develop a threshold decision rule that balances the mortality benefits against these persistent economic costs and apply this framework to orders issued from 2016–2022. Incorporating these persistent economic costs alters policy evaluation: the largest orders generate net benefits that dwarf their costs, but the …

Rethinking The Legal Status Quo In Cyberspace To Legally Attribute State Responsibility, And Enhance Accountability And Deterrence, Dan Efrony
International Law Studies
The absence of formal legal attributions of State responsibility for malicious cyber operations reflects a strategic choice by influential States—foremost the United States and the United Kingdom—rather than doctrinal certainty. So long as States avoid creating legal rules for attribution, they entrench cyberspace as a legal gray zone and expose the limits of collective attribution as a governance mechanism. This article identifies probative and institutional impediments in the secondary rules of attribution: the effective control test is difficult to satisfy for proxy cyber operations, the lack of an authoritative standard of proof enables plausible deniability, and, absent consent, States remain …

The Indonesian Conjunction Dan ‘And’ And Its Chinese Correspondences: A Corpus-Based Approach To Syntactic And Register Variation, Hatmi Idris
International Review of Humanities Studies
This study examines how the Indonesian conjunction dan ‘and’ is rendered in Chinese across syntactic units using a corpus-based contrastive approach. Focusing on children’s books, classic novels, and online news, it analyzes coordination at word, phrase, and clause level from a syntactic and register perspective. Findings show that dan ‘and’ does not correspond to a single Chinese form. At the word and phrase level, nominal coordination employs hé (和) ‘and’, yǔ (与) ‘and’, and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’ , with formal news discourse favoring yǔ (与) ‘and’ and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’. In verbal coordination, bìng (并) ‘furthermore’ …
