Empathetic Reactions Derived Through Abstract Sculptured Forms, Bruce Frederick Literal Jun 1978

Empathetic Reactions Derived Through Abstract Sculptured Forms, Bruce Frederick Literal

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of sixteen abstract sculptures. The material most often used is polyester resin. The work explores the emotive potential of the relationship between the organic forms and geometric spaces. The forms are derived from observing the environment, other current artists' works, and the works of art history.

The sculptures generally divide into three groups. The first is composed of geometric and organic forms that are altered slightly so that aspects of each form reside in its opposite. The second group maintains a purity of organic and geometric elements. Here a balance is kept by weighing the visual …

An Investigation Of Arsenic(V)-Catechol Complexes, Ronald P. Haak Jun 1978

An Investigation Of Arsenic(V)-Catechol Complexes, Ronald P. Haak

Dissertations and Theses

There is not, at this time, a simple method for the simultaneous determination of As (III) and As (V) at trace levels. The development of such as method is needed, as the toxicities of these two species differ so greatly.

As (III) and As (V) are polarographically reducible in the presence of excess catechol, but the wave produced by As (V) is depended on time, pH and catechol concentration as well as As (V) concentration. In order to understand this behavior, determination of formation constants for any complex species present were needed to identify which species is electroactive. The literature …

Trace Metal Ion Activities From Liquid-Liquid Partitioning Measurements, John Michael Kennish Jun 1978

Trace Metal Ion Activities From Liquid-Liquid Partitioning Measurements, John Michael Kennish

Dissertations and Theses

Elucidation of the chemical speciation of trace metals in the natural aquatic environment will lead to a better understanding of their distribution and ecological effects. One approach which can provide useful information about the chemical reactivity of metal ions is the measurement of their activity. Phase equilibrium methods are required and liquid-liquid partition equilibria are applicable. This study utilized model systems to demonstrate this applicability.

The partitioning of copper(II) ions as a chelate of acetylacetone was used to determine the trace activity coefficients of the copper(II) electrolyte in the CU(N03)2-HN03-KN03, Cu(N03)2-HC104 …

An Exploratory Study Into The Financial Situations Of Elderly Wards Of The Public Guardian And Conservator Of Multnomah County, Ruth D. Hudson

Dissertations and Theses

It has been the practice of the Public Guardian and Conservator (PG and C*) of Multnomah County to collect fees for service to elderly wards on an annual basis usually at the time of the annual accounting. The purpose of this study is to determine the profitability of deferring the assessment and collection of fees until the termination of conservatorship. The assumption is that such a policy would provide an immediate benefit to the ward who would enjoy more spendable income while he is alive and at the same time the Public Guardian and Conservator could still collect his fee, …

Material-Specific Processes In Tactile Short-Term Memory, Christina Anne Meyers May 1978

Material-Specific Processes In Tactile Short-Term Memory, Christina Anne Meyers

Dissertations and Theses

Studies concerning tactile short-term memory (short-term memory or the sense of touch) have often been contradictory. Some of these studies support the existence of modality-specific tactile memory, a separate, independent storage system for tactile information. Other studies do not support such a system. Further, confusion has arisen regarding the tactile test materials, since many of them use common shapes which are easily labeled verbally. It is hypothesized that information which can be labeled is stored in material-specific verbal memory in the left hemisphere, while patterned or spatial information is stored in material-specific nonverbal memory in the right hemisphere.

Due to curiosity about the "individual" vs. "social" intervention argument in the profession of social work, the authors of this study attempted to answer the question, “Do personality characteristics of Social Work Graduate Students influence their choice of social work practice?" Our hypothesis was that Introverts would be more inclined to focus on the individual in social work practice as opposed to Extraverts who would see societal change as a more pressing practice issue. Although our study identified no correlation between Introversion and Extraversion and social work practice orientation, there were some suggestions for further study. There appeared to be …

Historical Development And Application Of The Conceptual Approach In Teaching, Louise A. Knoll May 1978

Historical Development And Application Of The Conceptual Approach In Teaching, Louise A. Knoll

Dissertations and Theses

Contemporary American educators are expected to develop children's ability to think creatively. Unfortunately, many have understood "creative" and "creatively" as synonymous terms. In my opinion, healthy human beings are born with an ability to be creative. Being creative is innate. Behaving creatively is nurtured. Individual needs, individual worth, integrated curriculum, synthesis of affective and cognitive modes, and the whole child are additional phrases which have been misconstrued by educators. And yet, such phrases are at the heart of a conceptual approach in teaching, which is intended to make children think creatively. In order to discover the essence of the conceptual …
