The Effect Of Salinity On Habitat Selection Of Two Oregon Chiton Species (Katharina Tunicata And Mopalia Hindsii), David Carl Rostal

Dissertations and Theses

Adult specimens of Katharina tunicata (mean weight = 10.23 grams) and Mopalia hindsii (mean weight = 10.90 grams) were tested for osmotic stress tolerance and oxygen consumption rates in a series of salinities (120%, 100%, 80%, 60%, and 40% seawater) at 11°C and 16L:8D photoperiod. K. tunicata and M. hindsii displayed similar trends in percent body weight variation and volume regulatory responses to osmotic stress. However, K. tunicata experienced a significantly higher percent body weight increase than did M. hindsii in response to hypo-osmotic conditions (80%, 60%, and 40% seawater). The mean rates of oxygen consumption per salinity for the …

Humor Creation And Appreciation As An Indicator Of Intercultural Communication Effectiveness: Toward A Theoretical Model, Richard D. Tavano Feb 1986

Humor Creation And Appreciation As An Indicator Of Intercultural Communication Effectiveness: Toward A Theoretical Model, Richard D. Tavano

Dissertations and Theses

A review of the theoretical and empirical literature from the field of humor and from that of intercultural communication showed that no investigations dealt with the possibility that a sense of humor might serve as an indicator of intercultural communication effectiveness. This study was conducted in order to assess that possibility.

This paper has set out to answer the following questions: What cognitive processes are common to a sense of humor and to intercultural communication effectiveness? What does one's ability to create and appreciate humor say about that individual's potential for intercultural communication effectiveness? Through the review of the literature, …

Technology Impact Assessment: The Effectiveness Of Advanced Instructional Technology In Remedying Learning Difficulties Of Disadvantaged Youngsters In An Urban Setting, Wossen Encubahre

Dissertations and Theses

Technological advancement has allowed widespread use of computers. Teachers are using computer based instruction in educating talented and disadvantaged youngsters. Unabated by unsettled issues and claims, computers are introduced to cope with declining enrollment and school revenues; pressure to improve student achievement and cut costs. However, some educators fear two possibilities: computer displacement of teachers; and creating a class of technologically disadvantaged students that could result from a growing gap of access to computers. Another factor is the restriction of disadvantaged students to basic skills. While providing opportunities of a wider application to others. The objectives of this research are: …

Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz Jan 1986

Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a feedback cycle on problemsolving groups. A formal method, Systematic Multiple Level Observation of Groups (SYMLOG), was employed for the analysis of behavior in such groups. The system, which codes on multiple levels of communication, served both as a theoretical and an explanatory approach. Problemsolving groups which included a feedback session on group process were compared with problemsolving groups which were not given feedback. The study used primary data from SYMLOG field diagrams to determine whether group movement, leader movement, self-perceptions, and group satisfaction would be affected by feedback …

Dissertations and Theses

The Vale KGRA is characterized by high heat flow, two to five times higher than the worldwide average, and by numerous hot springs. The hot springs are aligned along faults. This phenomena is typical of a Basin and Range type geothermal system. The hot geothermal fluids migrate upward along the more permeable, fault planes.

The rocks exposed in the Vale area are the Pliocene Chalk Butte formation and the Pleistocene beds of Captain Keeney Pass. Both units are composed of volcaniclastic siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates. The units are differentiated by color, texture and degree of lithification. About 200 meters of …

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi Jan 1986

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi

Dissertations and Theses

Image representation plays an important role in image processing applications, which usually. contain a huge amount of data. An image is a two-dimensional array of points, and each point contains information (eg: color). A 1024 by 1024 pixel image occupies 1 mega byte of space in the main memory. In actual circumstances 2 to 3 mega bytes of space are needed to facilitate the various image processing tasks. Large amounts of secondary memory are also required to hold various data sets.

In this thesis, two different operations on the quadtree are presented.

There are, in general, two types of data …

Nitrogen Limitation Of Phytoplankton Growth In An Oligotrophic Lake, Michael Patrick Mulvey Jan 1986

Nitrogen Limitation Of Phytoplankton Growth In An Oligotrophic Lake, Michael Patrick Mulvey

Dissertations and Theses

Blue Lake, Jefferson County, Oregon, has high summer surface phosphorus concentrations (ca. 30 ug/l) yet is oligotrophic (summer Secchi depth is 11 to 16 meters). Nutrient enrichment experiments done with 1000 1 polyethylene enclosures indicate nitrate limitation of phytoplankton growth. Basin morphology may be an important factor in nutrient cycling in this lake. The lake has a maximum depth of 95.7 meters with an average depth of 42.7 meters. The lake basin has steep sides with only 4% of the lake bottom less than 3.3 meters deep. of recent volcanic origin.

In contrast, Suttle Lake, which is immediately downstream from …

Restriction Mapping And Expression Of Recombinant Plasmids Containing The Arsenic Resistance Genes Of The Plasmid R45, Terry M. Coons Jan 1986

Restriction Mapping And Expression Of Recombinant Plasmids Containing The Arsenic Resistance Genes Of The Plasmid R45, Terry M. Coons

Dissertations and Theses

The trivalent (arsenite) and pentavalent (arsenate) forms of arsenic are introduced into the environment through the use of arsenic in herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and the smelting of arsenic-bearing ores. Bacteria resistant to arsenic are readily isolated from surface waters, sewage, and clinical infections. Although some bacterial resistance is provided by inducible phosphate transport systems that discriminate against arsenate, marked resistance is carried on bacterial plasmids.

A 6.9 kilobase fragment previously derived from one such plasmid, R45, and containing the genes for inducible resistance to arsenite and arsenate was ligated into the cloning vectors puce and pUC9 in opposite orientations and …

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi Jan 1986

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi

Dissertations and Theses

The equations tor the propagation of Electromagnetic and Optical waves in tapered fibers and metallic waveguides are derived. Solutions are derived for the displacement of the beam from the waveguide axis as a function of distance along the axis, and also tor the beam width as a function of distance. These equations are solved numerically for a variety of tapered guides. Experiments are conducted which verify the theoretical results.

Electrochemical Methods For Speciation Of Inorganic Arsenic, Karen Ann D'Arcy Jan 1986

Electrochemical Methods For Speciation Of Inorganic Arsenic, Karen Ann D'Arcy

Dissertations and Theses

Arsenic is found in the environment in several oxidation states as well as in a variety of organoarsenic compounds. This situation puts additional demands on the analysis in that it is desirable to measure the amount of each species, not just all of the arsenic. The reason for this is that the different species have greatly different toxicities; of the major inorganic forms, As(III) is much more toxic than As(V). The goal of this research was to develop a convenient method for the analysis of mixtures of As(III) and As(V) at trace levels. Electroanalytical methods are inherently sensitive to oxidation …

Potential Motivational Effects Of Altered Compensation Rates In Comparison To Other Type Incentives On Building Principal Performance, Allan Paul Deckard Jan 1986

Potential Motivational Effects Of Altered Compensation Rates In Comparison To Other Type Incentives On Building Principal Performance, Allan Paul Deckard

Dissertations and Theses

The effective schools research has repeatedly concluded that effective schools are characterized by effective administrators. The desire, then, of local school boards to improve administrator performance has emerged, based upon the assumption that as building principal performance improves, so does teacher performance, and ultimately, student performance. Merit pay has received a great deal of attention in education recently as a means to motivate administrators towards improved performance. Merit pay is supported by the "physical-economic" school of thought which believes that individuals are "economically motivated". In contrast, the "work itself" or "job satisfaction" school of thought believes that individuals are best …

Synthetic And Nitrogen-15 Nmr Studies Of Some Heteroaromatic Systems, Roger Martin Sheets Jan 1986

Synthetic And Nitrogen-15 Nmr Studies Of Some Heteroaromatic Systems, Roger Martin Sheets

Dissertations and Theses

Beginning in the mid-1960's synthetic nucleoside derivatives of polyazaindolizines and polyazaindenes were studied for their anticancer activities. The most promising nucleosides for anticancer activity were pyrrolo-, imidazo-, and s-triazolo- pyrimidines and triazines. Syntheses of 1,2,4-triazolo 3,4c -1,2,4-triazine-7-oxide, 1,2,4-triazolo 3,4c pyrazine-7-oxide and 1,2,4-triazolo 2,3c pyrazine-7-oxide were achieved by the cyclization of the appropriate 3-hydrazinoazine N-oxide with diethoxymethyl acetate. When different one carbon cyclization agents react with the 3-hydrazinoazine-1-oxides they did not produce the expected polyazaindene-7-oxides. The reaction of formic acid with 3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazine-1-oxide or 3-hydrazinopyrazine-1-oxide produced the 3-formylhydrazino derivatives. Similarly, the reactions of the 3-hydrazino -pyrazine-1-oxide and -triazine-1-oxide with benzaldehyde, acetic anhydride, …

Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu Jan 1986

Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu

Dissertations and Theses

Economic systems analysis is a systems analysis technique of setting out the factors that have to be taken into account in making economic systems decisions. The inquiring and operational systems of the technique are almost exclusively designed for well-structured systems. In review of economic systems analysis against systems thinking, there is a growing tendency to discard the analytical approach as inappropriate for dealing with an ill-structured issue. Therefore, economic systems analysis needs both the inquiring and operational systems which are appropriate for ill-structured systems. The foregoing leads to the introduction of an extensive methodology. Mainly, the weakness of economic systems …
